Nanchang R2: (4) Rybakina d. Wang (Xinyu) 7-6(4) 6-2

Quite surprised there's no thread - Rybakina was the main talking point on here between Wimbledon and the start of the North American swing, and Xinyu is never short of a thread herself.

Flashes from both, but not the greatest match ever, and both struggled on serve, particularly in the first set where there were constant break point opportunities. A few momentum swings, Rybakina got the early break, but then went from 2-0 to 3-5, and Wang served for the first set twice, but was never ahead in either game, and was broken to love in the 6-5 game. Rybakina had quite a lenghty MTO at 5-6 and had her blood pressure taken, but was fine to continue. Second set was more comfortable as she raced into a 4-0 lead, and just held serve from there.

Golubic up next for a place in the semi finals, and neither player has had to beat anyone in the top 175 to get to this stage. I don't particularly rate Golubic, but I think Lena will still have play a bit better than her first 2 matches to win. Nevertheless, a 4th WTA QF in her real breakthrough year, and another win could take her past he career high of 61.

Wang has pretty bad and ugly technique, especially on FH side. The contrast with Rybakina's smoothness was quite brutal.

Judging by the sound of the impact, the ball from Xinyu's racquet definitely hit some flesh. She was lucky Naomi Broady wasn't around.
