Exclamation Breaking: 2019 Hong Kong MM 280 CANCELLED Due To Political Protests

unless you have been living under a rock, you have read about the protests and demonstrations that have taken place in Hong Kong during the past few months ... despite LAM saying she will withdraw the extradition law yesterday, most think that the social unrest will continue

all of this puts a cloud of uncertainty over $0.5M WTA Hong Kong MM 280 ... the WTA has already taken the step to postpone the release of the entry list for all tournaments that week including Linz MM 280 and Tianjin MM 280, giving players more time to switch to Tianjin or Linz

I think that any WTA player would be insane to choose Hong Kong at this point over Tianjin .... so the tournament and the WTA should just cut their losses now to save face from multiple BYES in the main draw and Rosalyn SMALL reaching the SF

remember this is the same tournament that had the whole fiasco with BOUCHARD several years ago, advertising her appearance but then she never showed up @danieln1

Re: Cloud of Uncertainty LOOMS Over 2019 Hong Kong MM 280: Will It Still Go On?

The extradition bill that triggered the protests was withdrawn a few hours ago. It's not quite over yet though. The MM could probably still go on as I think the protests are confined to certain areas. Whether it has put off players and crowds is another question.

This Hong Kong tournament is much better than all the other boring, useless tournaments in China. Okay?

I love Hong Kong as a city and I also think this is the best tournament in the Chinese territory. But there are things way more important in the world than holding WTA tennis tournaments.

Wasn't reported that the WTA Finals' stadium is currently used to park the army tanks? Awkward and messy.

The bill was withdrawn this morning. The tournament will be fine. Good for the protesters for not being sold out by their government.

No more messy than an sports organization self-professed to be empowering women throughout the world through sport holding big tournaments in those notable capitals of women's empowerment Doha and Dubai.

The tournament will go on, the question is if it will partake in the Hong Kong we know.

I suppose the Chinese won't take the protests for any longer and create Tianamen 2.0

GretaArn - Naomi Osaka

and a reminiscence to the past:
HELEN KELESI FOREVER
Hater of Radwanska & Wozniacki

the bill is not FULLY withdrawn. it's one of CCP's tricks... it's put under the motion of withdraw into the legislative council where it could still be overturned because the pro-china still has the majority in the legislative council.
the current situation is much more complicated than a mere "bill is dead", protests are most likely gonna go on

Thank you for clarifying.

It is a hot mess. Dropping a MM tournament in HK is not a big deal, say, compared to protecting democracy and civil rights.
