Great match from Serena. Hitting the ball so well. Her groundstrokes were just sublime - especially her BHDTL and her angles.
Her serve wasn't that good, but Petra couldn't challenge her much on return today. I thought this was the best match she has played off the ground all tournament - even better than against Sharapova. 34 winners off the ground to 16 unforced errors.
Serena played with some finesse too with some beautiful soft angles, dropshots, and even a lob in there... it was great to see her mixing her game up to adapt to Petra's game.
I thought Petra played really, really well - just couldn't handle Serena's pace of shot and just couldn't execute her game well enough to trouble Serena. Just couldn't employ her variety often enough - tried some dropshots, and they worked to decent effort. She really can leave New York with her head held high with her performance today - first run to R16 of the USO, plus she'll be top 20 Monday.
I am extremely concerned with Serena's ankle roll. I hope it ain't too bad and that she can at least take the court on Tuesday against Wang Qiang. Honestly, I just hope she can finish this tournament without withdrawing - win, or lose. Thank goodness she finished this in two so she can rest it over the next 1.5 days.
Great post-match interview from Serena too. Feels like her ankle isn't that bad judging from what she said, but she always tends to downplay her injuries so we'll probably get a better indication tomorrow or on Tuesday.
