Cincinnati R2: (8) Stephens def. Putintseva 2-6 6-4 6-3

Sloane’s aggression has kicked up considerably since pairing with Sven but the unforced errors are also skyrocketing. Another match with 50 errors and 40 winners. Poots did nothing the first set but let Sloane self destruct. She had 11 errors through the first 3 games alone. But she continued to chip away and hit winner after winner and the errors lessened a bit with Poots throwing more in herself.

Sven’s been preaching win ugly to her and this was the definition of that but glad that gutted out the win to stop the 3-game losing streak. Also manages to stay in the Top 10 unless Keys wins the whole thing.

Seems like the same overly-aggressive, careless Sloane from the 2017 year-end slump. We need the controlled aggression (still hitting big, but with better margin) of early 2016, 2017 USOS, and 2018 back. Lots of very big, pretty winners, but far too many errors.

The optimist in me says this is a correction from the overly passive play of her recent months, and she'll work towards a middle ground. The pessimist in me says she ditches Sven in the off season and goes back to nonsense, because coaching in the WTA is a game of roulette.

A deja vu from SS's return 2 years ago. A slow start and then a turn over. Stephens had no choice but to win this one or she would have lost the top status handing the 10th spot to Sevastova who didn't even win a match this month.

I'd believe she truly cares only when she takes the trophy and kicks that old ma' out of top 8 seedings for the Open. Anything else would be irrelevant in terms of caring.

She was absolutely nailing the ball with few errors at every round in Wimbledon (until points for a break in the second against Konta). I don't understand her.

Scone finally woke up from her Toronto-induced slumber.

Queen Venus - Sloane - Ashleigh - Naomi - Ana

Maria - Amanda - Sabine - Agatha

Wow, she competed for a change and look at the difference. She won the match.

This is a very good win for Scone the way things have been going lately and considering she has lost to Putintseva before, plus many similar types of players this year. Hopefully this match is a turning point for her but I'm not holding my breath.

Steady on. Sloane on playing Poots -

"If it's not one scam, it's another"

"I was trying to be zen, because she will work your last damn nerve."

“Every time I have played her it's been insane."

“It's hard not to see what's going on on the other side of the court, because it's just a lot of stuff happening."

So Sloane is a ballbasher these days

I will be interested to see what these leads to.

Aggression where? this was a push/moon ball fest. Sloane shots are the slowest on the tour. It's a pity Putintseva fell in the trap and played just like Sloane. Moon ball and push.
