Cincinnati R1: (16) Madison Keys def. Garbine Muguruza 6-7(4) 7-6(5) 6-4

After tough defeat last week in first round of Toronto by wasting 3 match points, it is good to see Madison winning this long match.

a win!

Who cares of hypertrophic weapons when the player on the court moves like music?

I was keeping track on the livescore app and thought Muguruza had blown a pretty big lead in the second set tiebreak but not totally sure?

Well done to Maddy .

My number one: Victoria Azarenka

ATP: Novak Djoković

Crazy Frenchies: Gilles Simon Alizé Cornet

Garbine played so well - but a horrible last service game costs her the match...

Muguruza hit 2 winners and 5 UEs in the first set. Which she WON. The mind boggles...

Muguruza will now be seeded outside the top 24 for the second straight time in the last 20 Grand Slams. Meaning she would potentially have to play one of the top 8 seeds in the third round if she were to reach that stage.

Kinda, sorta. Garbiñe used to have a track record of looking awful for most of the year, only to peak for one Slam. USO is her last chance this year.

Muguruza played quite well, but without better defense or some variety to throw Keys off, it's not a matchup she is going to win if Keys plays well and keeps it together mentally.

It was good to see Muguruza play a lot more solid and a lot less panicked though. It didn't get her the win today, but it will be enough against plenty of players. My only concern is that she doesn't have the discipline to play this way the majority of the time, and will revert to bashing.

I didnt know what to expect this match. I wanted to bet Keys, but she's been such a mental mess this summer
Muguruza was better than I expected her to be. Good sign going forward

Obviously glad Maddy came through after some horrible results of late but also one of the better matches I've seen Garbine play this year. As other posters have said stayed very composed and solid throughout.

But of course easier to stay calm if you believe your opponent will bash themselves out of the match at the end of the day. Didn't happen but a valid strategy with Maddy down the other end.

Be interesting to see if Garbine can replicate the same patience in other matches.
