Re: 24: what does Serena need to do?

I hope she gets to 25 asap, she is getting her reputation downgraded with every questionable tantrum and with every lost GS final she could have won easily in her peak era. And: with becoming 38 years old this late summer she may hurt her knees and ligaments with her additional weight (which she needs to maintain her force) by hyperextension.

Main reasons why she still hasn't won the same number as MC, yet:
  • The shock and awe doesn't work anymore on match-grounded players in later rds even if she loses set 1 and suddenly overruns her opponents in set 2 and as a result in set 3, too.
  • Opponents get stronger and more variable these days knowing how to move her to uncomfortable positions. And they can sense she gets beatable also at GSs.

Lesser reasons:
  • Her missing agility that was well-camouflaged by the sheer power of her strikes in the years before she was able to intimidate players with the impetus of her strikes or the aura of her physical presence
  • The missing match-practice just regarding the mental side of (failing) confidence if she gets into (emotional) troubles in decisive sets - not the physical aspect (=the stamina which she still has got enough to survive "4 sets")
  • The fight for honor which is always haunting her from her back parlor if she is falling behind in set 2 or 3 - she doesn't play merely for the game itself anymore then.
  • The overloaded expectiations on herself from her and her fans that she just needs her will power to survive ANY type of player - especially the unexpeted culminations of lower ranked ones.
  • The "survival" of early rds doesn't give her enough preparation for mental imperishable opponents anymore.

Re: 24: what does Serena need to do?

I think it's not in her hands.

Her opponents don't take her serious anymore, not even when screaming all over the place.

She needs to lose some weight to be able to go into the long rallies.

She needs to free her head from #24. Either it happens or not.

And it's 4 if you count Alison, who seemed to falter a bit at the times when it looked like she might be able to move firmly ahead in the match.

I am not a fan of the direction a lot of Maria threads have taken over the last 12 months.
The undertone is very disappointing, aggressive and the comments are sometimes rude to a player just trying to earn a living, playing her hardest and having a good amount of success given her god given, natural talents.
You made the list: NEW President Bouchard, Cibulkova, Mladenovic, Wozniacki, Kerber, Cornet, Watson, Broady.

fine then, take out Strycova and substitute Sevastova who she beat at the USO. My point stands. Williams is indeed still beating good players on reputation alone.
