Re: Penny for Margeret Court's thoughts
Sure, Margaret has a bit of a screw loose. All the great, super-dominant champions (Serena, Court, Graf, Evert, Navratilova, Seles*) have been wired differently from the rest of the pack.
Margaret could have kept her mouth shut about the gay issue and its relation to religion. And I think she should have done so—not to take away her right to free expression, but rather to focus upon helping the poor and hungry, which her ministry has been doing for years and years.
Using that Bible as a scientific “textbook” does not give Margaret the platform to make sweeping statements about complex human issues that her Holy Book is utterly unable to address, in all common sense.
She got on that song-and-dance, however, and has been deservedly criticized and also over-criticized, too, on that specific issue.
She ought to have left it alone, no matter what her personal interpretations, and focused on the Gospel of Christ, which centers upon love as an answer to confusion and hatred. (People forget that Christ, apparently, never condemned homosexual people, and that several letters written by the zealot, Paul, were “shoved into” the loose canon of the New Testament long after the fact. Paul never met Christ or knew him. Zilch.)
At any rate, Margaret is a very good-hearted woman, if also a misguided woman on the not-so-simple issue of our gay citizens and friends and selves, etc.
She doesn’t want to see her record equaled or surpassed, but I think she will handle it with greater class than most other champions, ironically.
