Serena is a LEGEND. She's always playing against her opponent + all the EXPERTS + a few shady linesmen.
They have been doing the bolded for years; nothing new at all. Nav isn't the only one. She is working up Halep to make Nav's secret wishes for Serena come through. Most of the time, it is irrelevant since it is the player who must execute on the court and many of them couldn't since Serena's game have something to say about it. So many insecurities in some people. Nav and the Czech players are of the same butthurt camp. Always pressed and all particularly Kvitova y the Pliskovas.

Re: Navratilova: Serena knows Simona is not going to beat herself

Simona needs to not only serve and return brilliantly herself, but she needs to keep Serena moving and off-balance CONSTANTLY from the ground, point after point, to even have a chance at winning.

That is a tall order. Mama Reenie is BACK and feeling her powers—I have a feeling she is going to be a holy terror in the final and utterly destroy Simona, 2 and 2, or something similar.

The only thing that could interfere with her momentum is if Halep really takes it to Serena from the get-go and makes her move A LOT, especially to that backhand side, as Navrat indicated; dtl plays, smart drop shots, mix-ups with slice ... all in addition to maintaining her depth and gritty consistency.

I just see it as a staggeringly tall order for Halep. Not impossible, certainly, but Serena owns her mentally.

Simona will have to produce a truly insane, pit-bull terrier fight, with extra smarts and craft. At the same time, if Serena has anything close to a flat day, she could be in big trouble.

Hopefully it’ll be a fine contest. I’d love to see Serena at least equal Court’s Slam count, even if she never surpasses it.

We’ll see tomorrow.

Simona wants to win Wimbledon for her mom. She has pressure and she tanks under pressure. So I don’t agree that she won’t beat herself. That said. Serena can also blow her off the court so......

Strychova and Halep need all the help they can get two lightweights against a heavyweight and I mean by weight and power not as human beings. That is why the H2HI is so one sides it will take a miracle for Halep to win.

Of course the Czechs can talk with Martina and ask for advice, she has a Czech passport and speaks czech. BTW Martina said for Wimbledon started that Serena is always the favorite as she comes to a tournament. Why does Serena needs her PR machine so much to make right wat is wrong Thieme incident, Osaka in Harper's Bazar after nearly a year.

She's a naturalized citizen so why isn't she talking with Serena, her fellow American? As for PR, serena has her side and is allowed to give it so that a full picture is shown and not a one sided hit job by critics.

Why would I want to stand side by side when I can stand out on my own?

Keep in mind that Serena is beginning to eclipse Navratilova’s Wimbledon records and accomplishments—one can see it in her need to emphasize that, at age 37-38, SHE had played so many more matches in life than Serena, etc. Backhanded compliments have always been a Navratilova specialty, from the 1970s onward.

Navratilova can be forgiven in some ways for being (underneath the exterior of a woman pushing 60) a lifelong, complaining juvenile. She was/is a hard-working All Time champion, and life was no bed of roses for her. But life was no bed of roses for any of these truly top-level, freakish geniuses (Evert, Navratilova, Graf, Seles, Court, Serena).

All of them have some kind of screw loose, and that’s okay—no one competes at such sustained levels unless they are wired a little differently.

But Martina must be naturally miffed to see her greatest “achievement event” (Wimbledon) potentially overshadowed by Serena in terms of history.

Evert, for example, doesn’t have that worry—her “signature event” is safe; her 7 French Opens will leave her forever the Queen of Clay and Roland Garros. No one will touch it.

Wimbledon was Martina’s “House.”

Well, Serena is about to take out a new mortgage.

If Simona can't move Serena Serena will win easily. Serena cannot move nearly as well as her prime, but it seems on grass she doesn't need to. Serena has won 9 out of last 10 vs Simona? Hard to see a change coming on this surface.

Re: Navratilova: Serena knows Simona is not going to beat herself

Interesting words. I agree with her

Serena: "We have great personalities like Jelena (Jankovic) on the tour."
Jelena: "If I had to pick someone after me, I'd pick Serena."

Serena Williams Maria Sharapova Jelena Jankovic
A. Radwanska V. Zvonareva C. Wozniacki P. Kvitova
N. Petrova A. Chakvetadze A. Myskina L. Davenport M. Hingis
A. Kournikova T. Paszek K. Sprem J. Dokic I. Tulyaganova

😆 Yes, you’re quite correct—her application was DENIED.

She will have to seek another lender.

But my point still stands about Navratilova being (understandably) a passive-aggressive old shrew when it comes to commentating about someone who can put dents in her Wimbledon record.

It’s almost like a conflict of interest, in terms of journalism and ethics (and Nav and Chrissie et al. are de facto journalists by being hired commentators) ...

... but journalistic ethics are deader than door-nails and Martuna can say what she pleases.

It’s nothing to get angry about—all the glorious champs have the minds of narcissistic teenagers, essentially.

Not a single scholar or high intellect among them, and you’d believe that.

That includes Margaret, of course: so many more loving causes she could have praised and publicized.

She could have really dialed it down. 🙄 Or, even better, kept her thoughts to herself, as many wiser people do, who know when to speak and when not to speak in this screeching world.

Martina’s magnificent, but she acts like a snotty little brat and has always done so. It’s okay: a champ like her is entitled to not just a bit but a LOT of attitude.

That being said, her current, future ex-wife, Nemcova, Lemcova, is morphing into Pam Shriver at lightning speed—I half-expect to see her and M‘Tina on a doubles court soon.

There must be a U-Haul parked perpetually in their yard.

😘
