Rumor is that they want to get a high level challenger in the winter. I'm guessing a tourney right after Midland? Wouls actually get a decent draw if it was a 125k/100k.
My mind went straight to there as well, would probably attract a good draw next to Midland on the challenger circuit - could even make it a WTA 125k.

Sad to see this tournament go, for many years it was a player favourite (won many awards in its heyday) and quite a list of memorable players who have won or played finals here. Unfortunately being indoor carpet as a lone event after the US Open geographically stood out like a sore thumb.

"Religion has actually convinced people that there is an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. Any if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

But he loves you."

Lindsay Davenport winning the title on her comeback, Maria Sharapova winning at 16, Capriati playing in her comeback year. I can't

I looked at the draws, and my first year as a ballboy was 1998, and 1996 going as a young kiddo. I saw Els Callens, Jolene Watanabe and Lisa Raymond play and I started tennis lessons right after!

End of an era. I can remember this tournament dating back to the mid 90’s

Also worth noting this was the tournament Serena made her WTA debut - in the qualies way back in 1995. She lost in Q1 to Annie Miller 6/1 6/1.

Ooh yes. So many good memories at this tournament. Speaking of Bartoli, this was also the event where the oracle known as Olga Puchkova predicted that Marion would one day win a Grand Slam title. Many on here thought that Olga was just trying to make herself feel better after getting double bagelled. How wrong they were!

Sadly, Jolene passed away a couple of weeks ago.

Jolene F. Watanabe (1969 – 2019)

Jolene F. Watanabe, 50, of Hilton Head Island, wife of Sylvain Elie and daughter of NSWTA member Janet Watanabe, died Saturday, June 22, 2019, after nearly two-year fight with cancer of the appendix. Watanabe was the head pro at the Smith Stearns Tennis Academy in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Watanabe was recruited out of California to play for University of Nevada Las Vegas. She was the Big West Conference Player of the Year as a senior. UNLV went 10-20 in 1986 in its first season after a five-year break without a program, and the following season as a freshman Watanabe helped the Rebels go 24-13. They never had a losing record with her on the team. After her UNLV career, Watanabe played on the WTA tour for 11 years, reaching at least the second round of each of the four Grand Slam tournaments. She upset Jennifer Capriati in the first round of the 1997 Australian Open, and reached a world singles ranking as high as No. 72 in February 1997. Watanabe went on to coach the New York Buzz of World TeamTennis from 2003 to 2007, and was a United States Tennis Association certified high-performance coach.

Oh no, how sad. I remember when she beat Capriati 1st round AO 1997 after Capriati had just reached the finals in Sydney. RIP Jolene - deserves its own thread really.
