WWW Ilkley W100 and claim that Wimbledon wildcard?

So, into the quarter finals now and unlike Surbiton and Manchester, none of the remaining 8 have secured direct acceptance into Wimbledon.

Haddad Maia vs Babos
Blinkova (3) vs Schoofs

Cepelova vs Cepede Roig
Niculescu vs Smitkova

Who will win the title and be pretty much guaranteed their £45k minimum Wimbledon cheque?

Re: WWW Ilkley W100 and claim that Wimbledon wildcard?

please let it be Haddad Maia

but Niculescu/Smitkova winner has a great shot too

would be second time in a row for Smitkova

Conchita MARTINEZ-Mary PIERCE-Lindsay DAVENPORT-Martina HINGIS-Serena WILLIAMS- and new legend Monica PUIG
Kata Srebotnik - Anabel Medina-Garrigues - Arantxa Parra-Santonja
Garbiñe Muguruza- Caroline Garcia- Polona Hercog- Astra Sharma - ...

Re: WWW Ilkley W100 and claim that Wimbledon wildcard?

I don't think there's an obvious favourite.

Smitkova is the defending champion and is normally good on grass, but she hasn't been too brilliant thus far, losing to Dunne the other week in Surbiton and finding herself in a position of being 0-5 down to Swan final set today - she did well to come back, but she doesn't want to be in point of no return too many more times. Blinkova must currently be highest ranked following her French Open run (she is, as she's the only seed left), but she's had a modest grass period thus far (was here for Surbiton as well). I thought VCR would be a grass mug, but she has come through quals, beat Wang Xiyu and dispatched Manchester champ Linette today. Babos and Niculescu are seasoned slam entrants.

I went for Blinkova.

What's the cutoff for Wimbledon? Blinkova is ranked 92nd

Niculescu deserves the WC after so many injuries during the last 18months and I believe she would get the title easily but I'm not sure she's 100% ok phisically

It's currently 103 as of the 20th May rankings, but Blinkova was 120 at the time (before her RG exploits), so is well down the alt list.

Who withdrew in the Niculescu/Begu doubles match?

Monica has looked quite good this week from the bits i saw, serve looks stronger than usual.

Wait, does Wimbledon use the May 20th rankings to determine entry into the main draw? So players active in tournaments right now are playing for nothing?

Yes, but it's not for nothing as rankings are a continuous cycle, so players are looking to boost their rankings for future tournament cut offs, particularly the US Open at this stage. Swiatek wouldn't have got into any other grand slam with her 60 odd ranking, just like SaiSai Zheng had to play US Open qualifying last year with a ranking of 63 (and lost in the first round of qualifying) because her Nanchang and Washington points weren't acknowledged as they were after the cut off.

Re: WWW Ilkley W100 and claim that Wimbledon wildcard?

This is effectively another Wimbledon qualifying situation. If this was the actually quals next week, Blinkova would be the 15th seed and would head up her section, but instead of having just the 1 17-32 Q seed, there would be two here, with Smitkova (20) and Haddad Maia (22). Quite strange how that has worked out.

Hoping it’s Cepede-Royg. I’m wondering if Pliskova beats Strycova in Birmingham if that’ll be enough for her.

Go Timea !
Her doubles' skills should help her on grass.
Plus I remember seeing her playing against Serena 4 years ago on Center Court and she was far from ridiculous.

Re: WWW Ilkley W100 and claim that Wimbledon wildcard?

Honestly, they have so much spare capacity on the wildcards, I'm wondering whether a final would suffice to get a WC for Blinkova.

Probably not, but it would get her inside the top 80, with a good recent slam result, and a good grass result, at the age of 20.

Everyone else would certainly need to win it.
