The "Polish Sisters": the WTA's most iconic squad?

The Polish sisters (Angelique Kerber, Caroline Wozniacki, Agnieszka Radwanska and Urszula Radwanska) were some of the most promising stars in the late 2000s.

A lot of hate was directed towards them ("omg they don't even serve over 200kmh! PUSHERS lmao!") in their early stages, which continued over their careers.

For a while, Caroline was a slamless #1 accused of vulturing New Haven and Istanbul every week while Agnieszka was hated for supposedly being "lucky" and pushing. Angie was considered to be too mentally weak and unfit to win big, while Ula was considered the lesser version of Aga.

In 2009 they went to Mauritius together over the off season. The name "Polish Sisters" was born.

A lot has changed since then, but with the exception of Ula, all have been among the best players of their eras. Some highlights:

Angie Kerber

The most successful sister and also the latest bloomer.

Grand Slams: 3 (AO 16, USO 16, W 18)
Grand Slam finals: 1 (W 16)
Highest ranking: #1
Highest YE ranking: #1
YEC: 0
YEC finals: 1
Olympics: silver medal
Tier I/PM/P5: 0
Tier I/PM/P5 finals: 5
Career titles: 12
Career finals: 19
Top 10 YE finishes: 6
Career Prize Money: $26,766,746

Caroline Wozniacki

Slamless #1 no more.

Grand Slams: 1 (AO 18)
Grand Slam finals: 2 (USO 09, USO 14)
Highest ranking: #1
Highest YE ranking: #1
YEC: 1
YEC finals: 1
Olympics: -
Tier I/PM/P5: 6
Tier I/PM/P5 finals: 6
Career titles: 32
Career finals: 26
Top 10 YE finishes: 8
Career Prize Money: $33,896,584

Agnieszka Radwanska

Grand Slams: 0
Grand Slam finals: 1 (W 12)
Highest ranking: #2
Highest YE ranking: #2
YEC: 1
YEC finals: 0
Olympics: -
Tier I/PM/P5: 5
Tier I/PM/P5 finals: 3
Career titles: 22
Career finals: 10
Top 10 YE finishes: 8
Career Prize Money: $27,683,807

With 3 slams, Angie is currently the second most successful player of the 2010-2020 decade after Serena. Caroline is up there with some of the most weeks as #1. Aga was always in the conversation too.

Caroline and Agnieskza have also had a lot of success with sponsorships, endorsements and the celebrity lifestyle. Ula sometimes tags along with Aga. Angie is too introverted for this, but has still had some big endorsements.

With their enduring friendships, iconic on-court and off-court moments and their hugely successful careers, is this the WTA's most iconic squad?

Obviously, they don't come close in iconic-ness to the Williams sisters, but I can't think of many more prolific squads than these. The Belgians were iconic too but weren't on the best of terms.

They have plenty of photos and moments together, but recently they have been pictured together as the original 4 at Aga's and Caro's weddings.

And now also at Caroline's wedding, with Serena part of the action too

They also have close friendships with other WTA stars:

- Serena (bff of Caroline, very friendly with Aga and Angie)

- Caro and Aga were formerly bffs with Azarenka, though it seems those relationships have soured a lot

- Angie is also bffs with Ivanovic

And Petkovic

And close to Cirstea through Ivanovic

They also seem to have some common foes, along with the Azarenka frienemy situation.

- Aga and Caroline have both had some noteworthy feuds with Sharapova

So, is this the most iconic squad on the WTA?

Is it sad that Ula is by far the hottest of them?

I'll add to Aga's titles the fans favorite for several years

A fave of mine isn't in the Polish squad...

Who cares of hypertrophic weapons when the player on the court moves like music?

The pusher era. My recollection is a lot of long rallies, battle of attrition, and mental battles, drama. They beat up on the Top 100, but fell short to Serena, Maria, Azerenka.

Now they are struggling against new wave of players, but are still young enough to compete at this level.
Would people say today’s tour is stronger and has more depth?

It's sad that Ola (Wozniak) was a more of a fifth member than Sabine
Perhaps things also soured out after Wimbledon 2013

Re: The "Polish Sisters": the WTA's most iconic squad?

Considering almost all the players mentioned here are done contenting at the top, how on earth could this troupe be in the same sentence with ANY strong generation of American players, Czech players, or even the Russian's of the early 2000s?

Because they take pictures together on vacation? I'm confused.

I swear the word "iconic" has all but lost its meaning.

“Iconic” is more than just results. It’s a combination of things.

I definitely don’t think Angie and Caro are done competing at the highest level (well, let’s see what happens with Caro especially).

The Americans, Czechs and Russians aren’t close friends enough to be called a squad.
