Birmingham R1: (7) Johanna Konta def. Anett Kontaveit 6-4, 6-2

Jo confident, clean and clinical start to her grass season. Very tightly contested first set, but Jo really put the accelerator on at 4-4 until the end of the match, never let up after losing her initial break lead. Serving improved as it went on, and groundstrokes were really nice today. Continues her form from the clay swing

As for Nettu, she competed well but just couldn't find enough consistency off of either wing, although she did serve well. Had she come out with that tight first set things might've been different. Really tough draw for the both of them although Jo's section has opened up a lot now with the out of form Aljona in R2 (or Swiatek), and the 4th seed Svitolina crashing out, although she isn't much of a threat on grass.

Ugh Kontaveit is struggling. Only won one match since making the Stuttgart final, and that was a three set win against Barthel. Needs to get something going soon.

Well done to Jo.

Jo doesn't miss a beat, picks up from where she left off on clay, nice to see.

She needs to get rid. Comes across as condescending in on court coaching. Also on BT Sport, one of the equally smug Male presenters is always banging on about Nigel because they are 'good friends'. Makes me wanna vom....

That is pretty much everything that is wrong with British tennis. I am sure Nigel got to where he is because of people he knows .

I've said it for a while now but Kontaveit is over ranked because of fortunate retirements and walkovers in big events in the last 12 months.

I think her ranking should be around 40 instead.

Impressed with Konta in her first grass court match. She looked as confident as she did on clay. She is a player whose mental state is a huge part of any success and she was calm, clean and confident. Kontaveit looked much less confident. She’s not really moved on since making the Stuttgart final. I thought she could have a nice little run at RG but no.
The Konta/veit doubles pairing could be fun for the commentators!

Not seen the draw but Jo is looking good.

I was going to say the same. Because he sure as heck didn't get to where he is on merit.

He was well connected before then too, but I guess that does help.
