Decline in Russian tennis? No Russian players in top 20 WTA right now.

Gone are the times of that Russian wave of the 2000s where you would have multiple Russian players at the same time sitting inside top 30 at the same time and sometimes 5+ of them in top 20 of ranking. The highest ranked Russian player in Women's tennis is Daria Kasatkina ranked 21. Will Pervushina or Potapova make it big soon?

Re: Decline in Russian tennis? No Russian players in top 20 WTA right now.

What's worse is that there are maybe 150 solid players in the WTA now, and not many are Russian!

For instance, Kuznetsova is #89, Makarova, Cirstea, Bacsinszky and Begu, are #90, #92, #104 and #110 respectively.

And what happened to Timea Babos? She ranks #137 now. Monica Niculescu, even worse, ranks #140. Yanina Wickmayer is the 152th in the world.

Russians in top 200

21 Kasatkina
35 Sharapova
36 Pavlyuchenkova
58 Alexandrova
62 Gasparyan
68 Rodina
76 Kudermetova
79 Zvonareva
82 Potapova
83 Diatchenko
89 Kuznetsova
90 Makarova
112 Vikhlyantseva
120 Blinkova
145 Flink
158 Samsonova
167 Zhuk
175 Kalinskaya

It will be harder and harder in WTA with such competitivity.

It's been 15 years since that Myskina-Sharapova-Kuznetsova hattrick.

The same was with Russian mens tennis, it's better now, but today's players are far from winning slams like Safin or Kafelnikov.

Russia has a big issue with demographics and it will be bigger problem for them to find tennis talents.

That's what happens when they can't use their magic medicine.

Re: Decline in Russian tennis? No Russian players in top 20 WTA right now.

I read somewhere that the game is now being taught mainly to the children of the wealthy there, rather than bringing through the most talented on merit, for whom coaching is now too expensive.

There doesn't seem to be any coming though either. Only Potapova looks like a top twenty player, Kasatkina has stalled, the older ones and even some younger ones like Kulichkova are retiring.

There seems to be less interest now, reflected in the Kremlin Cup being moved to another venue in Moscow which is much harder to get to.

Their DNA and build is ideal for tennis in both men and women. No medicine needed. In 2004 they had 7 of the top 15 women in the year end rankings. Actually the best young players in the world are made in Russia, including Shapovalov. Tsitsipa's mother is Russian, Sverev bros, Khachanov and Medvedev. The American girls are speaking Russian during changeovers (kenin, Anisimova), and lets don't pretend that Gavrilova is not Russian. There are 12 players representing Russia in the top 100. They are fine.
