Re: Victoria Azarenka Calls For Best of 3 sets Men Matches In Slams
With tennis becoming increasingly physical and modern attention spans getting increasingly smaller, it would probably be sensible to make the slams best-of-five sets from QFs on. You get to have players be healthier and less exhausted, while preserving some of the tradition and differentiating the slams from regular tour events. It would also be more feasible to introduce best-of-five into WTA with this format, if you care about the whole 'equal pay for equal work' argument.
But tradition is heavily, heavily weighted in the minds of most tennis fans (and probably most sports fans in general) so I doubt we see best-of-3 in men's slams (or best-of-5 in women's) any time soon. I don't really care either way, but I do believe the argument against best-of-5 from 1R on is generally stronger if you don't weight tradition too highly.
