Stuttgart R1: Kasatkina def Mertens 7-6(10), 7-5

No thread?
Kasatkina looked better than I have seen her this year.
Both players have a similar game with good solid all around play but no big weapons
Obviously a very close match. Mertens was up 5-3 in the 2nd set, but lost the next 4 games.

Well done, Dasha! Hopefully she can turn her season around on the clay.

Aside from Doha, Mertens hasn't had a good year at all. She's only won two matches since then.

Hlavackova, Strycova, Venus, Serena, Schiavone, Hradecka, Safarova, Cetkovska, Kasatkina, Putintseva, Ostapenko, Gasparyan, Krunic, Kudermetova, Schuurs

Hoping the clay will do something good for Dashka.

Amazing improvement from the practically winless Kasatkina of 2019. To have beaten a top 20 opponent when you haven't beaten anyone in the top 100 in the WTA is huge for her. A big boost to her confidence for this clay season, especially coming back from behind in the second set.

Maybe it's her rise on her best surface? Would like to see that!

This was a pretty weird match… Elise built easy leads in both sets and was completely outplaying Dasha but just stopped playing. In both sets. Very bizarre.

She really looked like she didn’t want to be there. No footwork at all, uncharacteristically lazy (wasn’t even chasing anything down), and was using her flat forehand instead of her trusty squash shot on points where it would have been better.

I honestly had to remind myself that she DIDN’T play Fed Cup over the weekend. You’d think she had won three long rubbers.

Dasha wasn’t as bad as she has been lately, but she almost hit double digit DFs and only really won this match because she was willing to move on the court while Elise wasn’t. She needs this confidence and they’ll probably call it a ‘comeback’, but she didn’t do much.

Great to see Daria get such a good win, hopefully the clay season will be good for her. She looks the fittest I have seen her in some time.

Its about time Dasha gets out of this slump. She ended 2018 in the top 10

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter....
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there
Enjoy This Moment!!

#PrayforElise

She's been horrible since winning Doha. And is losing many points from her MM vulturing spree last year. Hopefully, she can pick up points at Madrid and Rome. But, it seems whenever she has a good result, she has to have another few bad ones (happened last year after AO too). Can't ever reach the Top 10 if this is a recurring pattern.

Maybe Dasha can pull a Fognini and get a significant title out of nowhere?

Joke aside, she did look much better than in the rest of her matches this year. The poor serving was still there, but at least she managed to play long rallies without hitting loads of bad UEs. I guess that's a positive start.

Mertens looked pretty lazy throughout the match though, as if she wasn't really interested in this tournament.

Hasn't erratic serving always been an issue with Kasatkina, even when she has been playing well otherwise? The problem with 2019 up to now was that the rest of her game was not functioning either. At least she has managed to regain that to something reminiscent of the level of 2018 with this match, the serve I think will need a lot more work to sort out.

I don't think she served poorly, it was as good that what she did at Wimbledon last year and probably why she won today.

There were 3 parts in that match:

-Until *5-3 in the 1st set where she served very well, with a lot of free points. Her average 1st serve speed was around 160 Km/h and she was committing on her 2nd, she won her service games easily.

-Then the quality and speed of her serve dropped and she lost the depth on her shots that allowed Mertens to take the control even if Dashka was able to play enough good points to take advantage of Mertens UE and won that 1st set but Mertens had the control an took the lead 4-1* 15-40.

-Then Kasatkina started to put more pace again and that allowed her to win th match.

The quality of her serve was key to win the match today .
