Re: 80k Dothan F: [Q] K Kučová (SVK) d L Davis (USA) 3-6 7-6(9) 6-2
Wonderful fight for Ms. KK, but Lauren Davis has got to be wondering where her Top 50-ness went and if she’ll ever get it back.
For anyone who has actually EVER played any level of competitive tennis, failing to nab a 2nd set match-point and THEN getting routined in the 3rd set is far more demoralizing than just getting spanked 2 and 2 by someone better on the day.
(I know because I’ve done that very same thing to a few chokers in my ~old, crickety, playing years~. For a non-choker, you never quite believe how badly someone across the net can choke until they actually do it. Even when/if they are perhaps technically or physically better in some key department.)
Lauren will puke over this one. Count on it. Getting to the final and losing like that will not, in any way, make her feel “positive.” And it shouldn’t.
Still trying to figure-out the epidemic of choke-ism that has haunted women’s tennis at all levels for so many years, diminishing the overall “product.”
It does occur in the men’s game, certainly, but not anywhere NEAR the levels seen on the women’s tour(s)—WTA and ITF.
I have a couple of theories—cultural *and* technical.
But no one wants to hear the truth. Don’t spoil the “It’s OKAY to be a non-winner [loser]!” narrative.
Women’s tennis is so doomed.
And it’s a shame, because there is so much talent and so few compelling on-court rivalries.
