Li Na and Mary Pierce enter the Tennis Hall of Fame

Li Na, Mary Pierce, Yevgeny Kafelnikov head to Tennis Hall of Fame

Quote:
MELBOURNE, Australia -- Li Na is the first player from Asia elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

She joins Mary Pierce and Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the Class of 2019, which was announced Monday at the Australian Open.

All three players won a pair of Grand Slam singles titles -- one at Melbourne Park and the other at Roland Garros.

Li retired in 2014 at age 32 because of recurring knee injuries. She won the 2011 French Open and 2014 Australian Open, making her the first tennis player born in Asia to collect a major singles title and helping grow the sport in her native China.

Kafelnikov won the 1996 French Open and 1999 Australian Open, while Pierce was the champion at the 1995 Australian Open and 2000 French Open.

The induction ceremony is July 20 at the hall in Newport, Rhode Island.
Congratulations to both ladies! Very well deserved!

Both AO and RG champions Na Mary

What is its nature? He covets. That is his nature. And how do we begin to covet? We begin by coveting what we see every day.
And don't your eyes seek out the things you want?

Re: Li Na and Mary Pierce enter the Tennis Hall of Fame

Li Na is a very important player in tennis history, and a lot of pressure when you are the only great player from a big country
Kafelnikov is a multiple slam winner in singles & doubles, a World #1 and Gold medalist. He should have been in years ago
Pierce had a crazy dad and did great to win 2 majors. People who didnt see her missed a treat. Very powerful striker

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter....
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there
Enjoy This Moment!!
HEALTH and HAPPINESS to EVERYONE

Na Li is probably the weakest player to ever enter HOF results-wise. Though her contribution to tennis popularity in China and other Far East countries is undeniable.

She and pierce have similar statistics. yes Mary ended up with more titles, but Mary also played for 17 years compared to Li's 10. Li has a better win percentage and they won about the same amount of matches.

Re: Li Na and Mary Pierce enter the Tennis Hall of Fame

Seems like a pretty weak trio of inductees imo, 2 slams surely not enough to warrant a hall of famer spot? unless they're fattening it out by taking doubles into consideration. Neither of the girls were ever Number 1 and in Li Na's case, only won 9 tournaments, doesn't even work out to 1 tournament a year, maybe a token gesture to help promote Asian tennis? It does seem though like 2 is the minimum requirement as Mauresmo was inducted a while ago.

Kafelnikov you could argue, Kafelinkov was Number 1 but only for 6 weeks, won the singles Gold medal, but not a single Masters title, considering there's 9 of them a year that's not a good record.

It's funny how the International Hall of Fame is located in Newport famous for it's grass courts, yet all 3 were pretty weak on Grass, Wimbledon being the blue ribboned event for the sport, best they could all do was a Quarter Final.

If this is the criteria, and I liked Li Na btw, then in future the likes of, Kvitova, Kerber, Kuznetsova, Azarenka will be included, though obviously atm they could win more, with the likes of Cilic, Stephens, Osaka, Halep, Ostapenko, Stosur and Wozniacki just 1 slam win away from joining the club.

Personally I think you really have to leave your mark on the sport to be included on such a list, don't really think they left a big enough one imo.

Two slams is a huge achievement in itself, definitely warrants a place in the hall of fame. In the future, Azarenka, Kuznetsova and Kvitova should and will be inducted and most single slam champions also like Halep, Wozniacki and even the likes of Schiavone and Stosur. There should not be such a high benchmark for admittance, certainly not placing Wimbledon ober every other slam, when in this era it has the same worth as the other 3 slams. Having the HOF as some sort of 5+ slam exclusive club leaves out many notable champions who fully deserve this recognition. In addition, Pierce and Li played against and won against many hall of fame inductees and future nominees.

Also to say people like Kafelnikov and Li didn’t leave a mark on the sport is ridiculous. They made tennis huge in their respective countries, look at the influx of Russian players and chinese tournaments since their careers. That’s not a coincidence.

^^ Sabatini had one GS singles title and was inducted into HOF so why not Na and Mary?

That's true, but Conchita had more impressive career than both Mary and Na, despite winning only one GS singles title. I'm kind of sad these two got inducted before her.
