Re: 2019 Porsche Race to China

#8 last year was 4,365 points, so Barty and Halep most likely qualified.

That random chick who did something special this week and will surely be the next GOAT

Re: 2019 Porsche Race to China

The top 4 are pretty much there, and Bertens is not someone who could potential implode like say Osaka, so you'd have to think Barty, Halep, Pliskova, Kvitova and Bertens would be all be nailed on. Osaka still more than likely especially with the hard courts returning, so there's probably just 2 more spots available, Bencic in a reasonably strong position at the moment, but certainly not a safe bet and it's anyone's guess after that. I assume Serena won't play enough to get herself into realistic contention, and even if she won the US Open, she'd probably withdraw, despite her saying she'd like to play in China this year.

Not my favourite line up, and a little bit boring to me, but those top 5 have been, and are, the most consistent. I must say I much preferred a couple of years ago when you had the likes of Muguruza and Ostapenko there, but Mugu is badly out of sorts and Ostapenko is more in danger of slipping out of the top 100 than qualifying for this. Wouldn't mind Svitolina getting the chance to defend her title either, and Konta potentially getting in would be great for British tennis. It would also be nice if one of the youngsters had a strong second half of the season and forced their way in.

I think Osaka might be safe regardless because she did win one of the GS. If her ranking does slip out of the top 8, the the WTA will more than likely give her a WC for Shenzhen. Something they didn't do for Sloane in 2017. They won't let a Japanese player miss the the first WTA Finals played in China.

They don't have the WC anymore according to the rulebook

Re: 2019 Porsche Race to China

Last year at this time, Osaka was 14th in the race with 2016 points. The USO and the Asian swing helped her a lot. Hopefully she gets at least 1000 points somewhere to be safe. Btw, Osaka is the brand ambassador for Shiseido, I am sure a WC is possible if she doesn't qualify - Asian market and sponsor muscles combination.

Edit: Just read no WC, oh well ;/

Doubt it, you can imagine the scandal the 8th player would provide, not to mention I doubt Osaka wants that kind of attention. There's a LOT of money on the line here, the most tennis has ever offered, to men or women, so it will be a bloodbath for the most likely remaining 4 spots (but realistically more like 3).

Ignoring anyone that's under 2000 points right now (sorry Sloane) we have 8 players contending for just 4 spots. And I'm still split whether Serena would go there or not if she qualified. Since it's the first year in Shenzen and there's so much money on the line, she just might come, even if there's a strong possibility it ends badly for her (she would play a top 8 player every day, this year she's only played 3 matches against top 10 players, losing two of them).

They have never used the WC and I donít think they will ever ... but it is possible until the draw is out

If they have a shitty year outside that one slam, certainly not. One fluke does not make them worthy to be a part of Shenzens elite.

Osaka will qualify on her own. There are plenty of hardcourt events in the US swing and the Asian swing for her to get enough points. Her sponsors and fans are expecting and planning for her to be there so itís a must.

Serena is already booked for speaking engagements during the WTA finals so......

If Naomi starts winning again on HC then we I think can truly say that she is indeed a HC Specialist and it might take a few more years to feel comfortable on Clay & Grass.

Then I guess that settles it (Serena out), 7 players fighting for the 4 spots.

And yes of course, realistically as long as she is healthy Osaka shouldn't have any issues making enough points in this second half of the hardcourt season. Plus after the lackluster grass season she'll want to make a statement when the HC season starts, that she's still here, able to win big. And you know, she's still one of the favorites for the USO, despite the fact no one seems to be able to defend titles on the tour. But yes, I too am confident she'll get there, we were simply debating the possibility of a WC, and if by some misfortune she can't qualify I don't think she would want that WC anyway.
