How far can Wang Qiang go?

She's having exceptional results lately.

Maiden title at WTA Nanchang, 3R at the USO, then wins Guangzhou and now back to back SFs in the WTA's highest tournament categories.

Do you think she's going to become a regular Top 20 player? Top 10 even? Or just a good stretch at the end of the year when many top players struggle with their form?

Re: How far can Wang Qiang go?

The first half of 2019 will be crucial IMO, in terms of how she'll play outside of China, because her recent run of form has virtually been in the Chinese tournaments.

She's shown she can contend with the very best, but whether or not she can do it consistently enough outside of home soil when the crowd isn't as supportive towards her will determine her ceiling.

Personally, I don't think she can reach Li Na-esque heights and contend for GS titles, but I do think she can be a consistent top 15 player at the very least and perhaps reach some major QFs or SFs.

She has one of the most eye pleasing games on the tour. Hopefully she can snatch some big titles, starting with Beijing PM.

For history, it took more than eight years for Wang Qiang to reach the ranking 100.

Re: How far can Wang Qiang go?

I'm having her on my radar for quite a while. She can score big results like today and the other day she plays like crap against some journeywoman.

I like her game and I think with some more experience on the WTA tour and some more consistency she can join Osaka and Sabalenka in the Top10 sooner or later. Don't think that she will be another Na Li, she is too old for that, but I see a potential regular SF/QF in the Slams in her.

GretaArn - Naomi Osaka

Re: How far can Wang Qiang go?

Hard to say

We had a similar conversation with Shuai Zhang after she had a good run at the Australian Open at a similar age. Wang will be 27 in January. Will have to see her results in the early part of 2019 to make a clearer judgement
Cindy and Kate likes this.

Wozniacki YNWA * Naomi Osaka * Zhang Shuai * Hsieh Su-wei * Chan/Hlavackova *

When you read up about her, her coach says that she was not committed, and used to miss practice, or a certain part of the season just to go home. I guess she has now recommitted herself to the game.

Re: How far can Wang Qiang go?

She's just reached her Career Best Ranking so the next target push should be Top20/Top15?

She's been playing well the last couple of years where she has been able to play steady tennis but lacking the finishing shots and mental resolve. I remember watching her 2017 AO first round against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni where she was able to stay in the rallies with Mirjana and had several chances but couldn't finish her off and eventually lost in three sets [4-6 6-3 6-4]

We've seen this improved mental resolve toughness of late so it will be interesting to see if she can continue this improvement of form and mental attitude outside the Asian Swing events. She's looking to be another late bloomer so looking forward to what she can achieve next season and seasons to come.

What is its nature? He covets. That is his nature. And how do we begin to covet? We begin by coveting what we see every day.
And don't your eyes seek out the things you want?

I can't trust you anymore

Re: How far can Wang Qiang go?

Game and talent are one thing, but I can see she's down to earth, works hard, isn't satisfied for few months because of one good result, always tries her best against top20 and is very competive with them, so could be big match player - important factors, talking about potential. I think she's good enough to break top10, win P5/PM and make slam SF. What will she do with it, it depends on her.

Tells a lot why she was visible for some time, but never made it. Something must have changed and it doesn't look like this anymore.

You might as well revise that target because she could already reach top 20 (exactly 20th) this very weekend if she wins Beijing.

I feel as of she is 20 or something, like Osaka, the way she has suddenly burst into everyone's consciousness. It's weird that suddenly, at 26 and a half, she is having all this success. If she can continue playing as well as she has been (which is by no means certain of course) then she should certainly by challenging for the biggest prizes next year.

She's pretty good for an Asian vulture. She could vulture her way into top twenty.

Re: How far can Wang Qiang go?

I can imagine this might sound like a long shot for some people but she kinda reminds me of Na Li in terms of game. She doesn't have the balance that Li had, but she has the strokes and probably an even better serve.
