The issue is not even what but who did it (it would have been uncontroversial if that was a magazine ad trying to promote the latest edition)

Tennis is supposed to attract prestige and status. So aside from anything it's a marketing "own goal" by the organizers to act cheap and smutty by being so overt.

That will be $50,000.

Case in point: I watched a lot more Martina Navratilova than Katarina Witt.
I think if used intelligently sex can sell.

I mean, it's no wonder this doesn't sell:

It's just a lame and tired concept, nothing remotely provocative about it in this day and age.

But for example when Tom Ford shaved the Gucci logo on a model's pubic hair back in the early 2000s

I think that worked very well, "sex sells" was all the rage back then so I feel like there was a kind of permisiveness to something as outrageous as that, but it's still outrageous and provocative so it made headlines and generated a good deal of publicity for Gucci.

Or his breakthrough collection for Gucci too, he felt "sexy" would sell during that time (as nobody else was really doing it) and he was completely right.

Haleptard likes this.

"Sometimes we've wondered if Martina actually knew what she was saying. Maybe it was her age or inexperience or something got lost in the translation. But I don't know. She comes out with something astounding and then just stares at you like, 'What did I say?' But then she'll have that glint in her eye."

I mean, I am personally no fan of centrist market ideology, but there are ways to do capitalism that aren't completely laissez-faire.

Indeed - actually this is an important point to bring up because even if you think this is tacky or demeaning or whatever to advertise the tournament like this, there's a danger of just accepting the "sex sells" cliché without actual data.

Quite apart from Bouchard obviously NOT bringing in the spectators in her last two televised matches, when we say "sex sells" - to whom do we mean?

If you think "sex sells" applies to women's tennis - you're saying the only consumers the WTA should cater to are straight men.

Given how many fans on this board are straight women or gay men, there's a hell of a lot of self-negating going on.

I have to say as a straight man, I'm always somewhat offended that people assume I'm that easy to bamboozle.

I say somewhat because I am well aware that in the world of today, being stereotyped as being easily distracted by pretty women is a fairly minor cross to bear.

Don't you think this already happens, both in sports/entertainment and in the world at large, and to both men and women?

We are conditioned to treat attractive people better regardless of gender

Stephens, Venus, Giorgi, Vesnina, Puig, Svitolina, Muguruza and many others are sexier than 60Chard

she could be more the most sexy of the tournament though

Geez, what a bunch of hypocrites feed on this thread. If you know how capitalism works then stop with all the hypocrisy.
I believe most WTA players would get a positive response if they showed up in a straight male's bedroom in a SI outfit

No, no, no.... those players are NOT sexier than Bouchard. Come on now...

I'm no fan of Genie, but even I'll admit she is a top 5 beauty queen of all-time, on the tour. Would people please get off there high-horses and face facts?

Our society is getting more vein by the day. Style and looks matter more than ever, and people are getting more and knowledgeable about style. Blame youtube and instagram for that.

Heck, even in the wild beauty matters. Why do you think Peacocks, um... pea, or cock, or whatever...?

I guess they just wanted to get latinas pissed, so they will play with chip on their shoulders and go far. Seems more logical than they actually believed what they wrote.

There is no problem in adding beauty to a list of qualities when describing a woman. But for an athlete, a journalist, an actress, etc, only pointing out that she is sexy while not mentioning her accomplishments is degrading. You wouldn't do that with a man.
Not arguing with your point but at what point Bouchard start to be considered as a model (who ocassionally plays tennis)?

"Beauty needs to be rewarded" dumb quote of the year (even coming from where it's coming). Not hard work, or talent, or determination to improve, but beauty
