I think that's true. Watching CoCo just now, she has a big serve but it's inconsistent and unreliable under pressure moments.

Yeah, it's true. Serena's serve would stay as maybe the most effective weapon in tennis, but the idea of the thread but that's not the topic of the thread. I'm only saying her serve is strikingly good, but herself being able to sustain at 35 years of age - not so much.

I really doubt Kerber, Radwanska, Halep, etc. would prefer to have all the flaws in their game. Halep's serve could be slightly better but it could never be as big as Serena's because of her height at least. There was a thread around about Bencic being a poor returner because of lacking a better reaction and reading a serve. I remember Dementieva had an okay serve once upon a time and had to modify it after a severe injury , thus becoming the DF machine we all recognize her. I guess it's all about biomechanics in the end and players try to build the most on their pros. If you can't have a great serve, try developing a great ROS.

It's a shame the majority of WTA players choose just to stand on court and admire her winning instead of developing a proper ROS.

It's amazing she is still there with motivation and ambition and her body not breaking apart. I guess it has to do with the luxury of taking those big gaps she from on-court activities during all those years so that she would have proper rest and successful healing.
Your post is filled with bitterness, because your fave doesn't have the right strengths and will never dominate the game because of it

Serena may not be the most powerful ever, but her technique is FLAWLESS. Unlike big servers Lisicki, Pliskova or even Venus, Serena has that perfect motion, that really uses the power generated from her legs and shoulders, and unreadable ball toss that will always combine to be the biggest asset in women's tennis. I'm not sure why people aren't replicating in some way, it's literally the most fluid and technically perfect shot ever

It's not the only thing that makes her great but it's her greatest weapon for sure. Anyone who denies that is lying to themselves. Serena is a complete player. She has it all, but she's often won many close matches against elite players mainly because of her serve when her groundgame wasn't working. She would have had 50% less majors imo with a Jankovic serve for example. Her serve is her main weapon. She wins so many points with it. Yesterday vs Safarova she had 14 aces, but she also had many points with the 1st serve where the ball bounces off Safavoras racket and goes out, which should be counted as an ace too. Just soooo many points with the serve.

It's a good thing. Having a great serve is the best thing you could wish for in this game!

I think Djokovic is a good example of this now. In '14 and '15 his serve was on fire and he dominated EVERYONE. Now it's not working and he's struggling and losing more often.

My fave would hardly be a fave of mine if she played like Serena. I never cared about achievements and my favourite players are usually lesser players as you can see.

Glancing at your faves I see at least 7 slam titles... you call that lesser?

Only Kuznetsova had a GS title when getting on that list anyway, Muguruza and Kvitova were well out of top 20. I don't stop liking them once they win one also, I'm just not a glory hunter. It's a long list also, a really long list.

Re: It's amazing that '35 years old' Serena still has the best serve and power in WTA

The serve isn't really something that declines as quickly as other facets of the game. The likes of Sampras, Ivanisevic, Roddick etc were still serving bombs up to retirement. Karlovic is like a grandpa and he's still the most dominant server on tour. Federer's is still going strong. His serving performance against Murray at Wimbledon in 2015 is about his best ever. Today he was still bamboozling Berdych with it.

It's more "amazing" (or rather, disturbing) that she's still about the best athlete on tour. Some have the power. Some have the speed. Some have the agility . But none have the combined athletic qualities of Serena despite her being 35 and clearly miles from her physical peak years.

Well, Serena fans didn't start to be fan of her when she started contending for GOAT.

In the late 90s and early 2000s, Hingis was the only top player who didn't have a "big" serve, but she was one of the best place servers ever perhaps. Venus, Serena, Lindsay, Pierce, Seles, Graf, Capriati, Mauresmo, Clijsters, Henin, Kuz all have/had serves that were weapons.
That's where i was headed when i read the OP.
I'm surprised that Pliskova is the only really big server other than Serena, with Kvitova and perhaps Stosur up there as well.

Other than the top10 mentioned players, there used to be alot more players with power serving - Bovina, BSM, Tulyaganova etc. These are serve reliant players, the only which we can compare today is Coco.

I find "big serving" as a very American aspect of the sport, with huge hitters on the men's side mostly, but the women as a whole are good in this department (as well as the FH), but i do feel that there should be more "serve-bots" a la Karlovic on the women's side as well, and i'm honestly surprised that the movers gained more ground than the servers.

Honorable mentions to Mlad, Krajicek, Danilidou, Molik, Safarova, Meghan, Stevenson.

Serve Vs Serve - Davenport IMO had a bigger serve than Serena, but the lesser mentality on the big points, lesser variety and lesser game to back it up.
However, Her second serve remains one of the most reliable shots of the game.

if you have nothing important to say, please do so in non-tennis forum. if you have something you think is important, but is actually rubbish regarding anything other than tennis - please do so in the non-tennis forum. if you have something tennis related to say, but it's actually "OMG, X player is so h0t!1" or "who has the biggest boobs on the wtatour" please do so in menstennisforum, under "wta forum". if you have something important, tennis-related and interesting to say please do so. No one in the world can understand how much tennis means to someone, except another fan.

Serena IS the most powerful server ever. Lisicki may have hit the biggest serve, but Serena always tops out with the biggest average speed in tournaments. It's weird someone like Pliskova is seen as a "serve bot" but her top delivery this tournament is only around 115mph, where the likes of Osaka and Serena have hit the early 120's.

Some girls develop a good serve, then neglect the rest of their games.
Others have no serve, but a pretty decent ground game.
It must not be easy.
