Shahar Peer Detained At Dubai Airport
Israel's Shahar Peer talks to reporters from CNN after she was detained by Dubai Airport Officals for arriving in the country with an invalid visa. Peer has stated the tournament officials in Dubai have yet to issue her a visa.
Israel's Shahar Peer has been detained shortly after arriving into Dubai earlier today on account
of an invalid visa. Peer was trying to use a visa given to her to enter Doha where she reached the finals of the Year End Championships. It is unsure whether or not the top-ranked Israeli player has been issued a visa to enter Dubai. Peer said she has yet to hear back from tournament organizers and her visa issue is still unknown, even to her.
"I'm not sure what the hold up is. I have yet to hear from the tournament's organizers since I told them that I would be needing a visa. I'm really excited to be given the chance to play in Dubai. I got to play in Doha at the end of last season and it was such an amazing experience so I can't wait to see what Dubai has enstore for me." Peer said, answering reporters who were around her at the airport.
Shahar is the owner of 1 singles title which she won on clay in Istanbul. One of her biggest marks on tour was reaching the finals of the Year End Championships last season which she lost to Maria Sharapova. It was a huge moment in women's tennis when Peer took center court in Doha and played before a largely Muslim audience. She began the first ever Israeli player to play in the UAE.
Last week, the world's number 11 made reached the semi-finals of a tournament Pattaya City. Peer is hoping to finally crack the top 10 by having a stellar result and hopefully a second career singles title. She will be teaming up with Russia's Anna Lapushchenkova in women's doubles.
