Thumbs up Kim injuries thread

I haven't really seen a thread for Kim's ankle injury, and I have some questions, so I decided to make a thread for it. We can also discuss her shoulder injury or anything else here.

Now, to her ankle; I had read it was a brusied bone. Is that true? If so, why would Kim need surgery for that? A brusied bone just requires rest.

Prayed through the nights
felt so alone
suffered from alienation
carried the weight on my own
Had to be strong
so I believed
and now I know I've succeeded
in finding the place I conceived

It is indeed a bruised bone.

Kim said on Belgian television she won't have surgery if there are other options, such as taking a few weeks off and make sure it doesn't get chronic. She will always have to tape het ankles, just like Lleyton.

They also said she would need surgery for the shoulder injury two years ago, but she never had; she is just receiving good treatment for it after every match...

I also thought she had chipped the bone At least that is what I have read & if that is true that is why she may need surgery depending on the size of the chip. She does definately have a bruised bone though.

This is what I wrote in the Sydney thread, in response to your previous inquiry:

It's a bruised bone behind the tendon in the ankle; I think they are afraid that it's actually a bone chip that's causing the pain. I don't know for sure and the reports have been vague, at best. So, it's a chronic injury.

If she had surgery, it would be to remove the bone fragment (if that is indeed the case) or to otherwise "clean up" the area. Without knowing exactly what the problem is, it's hard to say what the surgery would be for. The recovery period would probably be at least 6 weeks (because of the simple fact that it's surgery), most likely longer.

It's a tough decision. It's possible to live with a chronic injury, though it may one day be so bad that surgery is the only option. Right now it sounds like an absolute last resort. From the news articles and Kim's diary, it sounds like physiotherapy treatments and strappings are sufficient right now. I think these will be good preventative measures, but the issue at hand right now is resting and recovering and letting the ankle heal. I'm concerned that she's pushing herself, but I don't know her or her body.

There is concern in a thread in GM about playing with tape or braces, but a lot of players, especially on the men's tour, play with preventative strappings all the time. Lleyton plays with ankle braces. Kim already wears tape anyway; I can't think of a match I saw last year where she didn't have a wrist taped up under her sweatband.

Well, there is some piece of bone that shoud be removed, because it won't disappear by itself...

Kim said in her diary that if she can avoid surgery, she will

Ugh, not very good news about the injury thread

This is from the BBC website:

Injury blow for Clijsters

Kim Clijsters could be out of action until May, because of a wrist injury she sustained at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells.
The Belgian world number two was initially thought to have bruised bone on her left wrist and tendonitis during her win over Angelika Roesch.

But the injury has turned out to be a tear in her tendon.

"I am not allowed to move my wrist for 10 days," she said and warned she may face three more weeks out after that.

Although Clijsters is right-handed, she plays with a double-fisted backhand, which would make it impossible to play with the injury to her left wrist.

It means she could miss Belgium's Fed Cup clash against Croatia in her home town of Bree on 24-25 April.

And she was also supposed to play a much publicised 'love match' against her boyfriend Lleyton Hewitt.

Clijsters has one of the busiest schedules in tennis. She played over 100 singles matches last year along with some 50 doubles matches.

From yahoo.com:

Clijsters injury could be worse than expected

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- Kim Clijsters could miss up to six weeks because of a torn tendon in her left wrist.

The injury was first diagnosed as a stress reaction, but Clijsters said Tuesday on her Web site that the tendon in her left wrist had a tear of a little more than half an inch.

"I am not allowed to move my wrist for 10 days,'' she said. ``At that stage a further diagnosis will be made, and if it is negative, it would mean up to three more weeks of full rest.

Clijsters has had her left hand in a brace since Sunday and the injury, which forced her out of the Indian Wells tournament, could keep her off the circuit until May, she said Tuesday.

"Then it would be tough to get in top shape for the Fed Cup,'' she said. Belgium hosts Croatia in Clijsters' hometown of Bree on April 24-25.

One week earlier, she was supposed to play against her fiance, Lleyton Hewitt.

"It would be too bad because I was in great shape,'' she said.

Clijsters won back-to-back tournaments in Paris and Antwerp before her second injury of the season.

Clijsters, ranked No. 2 behind fellow Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne at Indian Wells, hurt her left wrist in a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Angelika Roesch on Friday.

She couldn't recall how she hurt herself, but said the pain began late in her match against Roesch.

Even though she's right-handed, Clijsters has a fearsome double-fisted backhand, making it impossible to play with an injured left hand.

C'mon Kimmie!! I hope you'll recover soon!!
