Unhappy The end for Kim and Ai looming?

Source: Flemish VRT text news, Nov. 29, 2003

(and see also Het Nieuwsblad, Nov. 29, 2003)

Is it the end for Kim and Ai ?

translated by Ingrid

Kim Clijsters has to look for a new doubles partner. The Flemish newspaper Het Nieuwsblad has read this in the Japanese sports newspaper Nikkan Sports.

According to the Japanese newspaper it is Ai Sugiyama’s mother (and coach) who doesn’t want that her daughter plays doubles with Kim Clijsters any longer. Especially the fact that Kim is deciding more frequently just before the start of a match whether she will play doubles or not, was sticking in the throat of mother Sugiyama.

Moreover, Sugiyama has already found a new doubles player. In 2004 she’ll play with the South African Huber.

What do you Kim fans think of this, if it is indeed true what Nikkan Sports is writing, according to het Nieuwsblad that is?

Personally I have some questions though. To me it didn't look like Kim has been redrawing that much. Anyone with a good memory re this?

And when they were playing, they were a more than dangerous combination on court, just see at what they won this year!

I don't think Ai will get as far with Huber, with all respect to both. And now, since Ai is in the top 20, and consequently has to put her priorities elsewhere as well, I do think it would be wise to not change a winning team. I do realise that there is always still a chance that Kim won't play, however that chance doesn't weight up against the benefits for Ai of playing with Kim, imo.

I can't help it, but I am to say the least re the motivation for this decision,IF it's true.

Any Japanese CCLers who know more perhaps? So far I didn't find this reported anywhere else...?

I personally find it hard to believe... I thought the girls loved playing together, that that was their main reason for sticking with eachother? why would that suddenly have changed?

well, just hope it's not true...

yes, I had the same reaction: Kim almost never pulled out except for the USOpen and those were special circumstances.
I already read -something like a month ago- that Ai had found a new partner because Kim had decided to cut down on her doubles schedule. Guess newspapers are looking for silly and gooberish excuses now.

I think sujiyama mother drank too much before the interview...her words r bad towards Kim and I don't think Kim deserved it above all considering she and Ai r so close !!!who knows...

Ai' & her mom must have serious reasons cos I think they're kicking a huge chance away. I wonder with whom KIM is gonna play doubles \ I think Dani Hantuchova might be a good solution...what do u think?

Dani's going to team up with Els Callens next year...

Anyway... what Ai's mum seems to be forgetting is that those two girls did win 2 slams together, so I don't really see her problem

Well these comments are new, and pretty harsh imo if they are true , but during the Championships the news was out that they were going to stop playing doubles together. The reason that came out at that time was that Kim wanted to focus on singles next year where as Ai wants to continue playing doubles full time so then it's only natural that they would split up as a team.

I thought that Kim was the one who wanted to split up, cuz she was playing too much tennis.

Kim and Ai announced during LA they wouldn't be playing toegether next year, and Kim said it was cause she wanted to cut down on her doubles particularly leading into the slams, so I don't think Kim will look for a new partner I don't think she will want to make a commitment to anyone to play.
And Kim didn't withdraw all the time on Ai, sure she pulled out in the US Open but Ai said she understood Kim's decision and if it was her she would have done the same thing, they didn't play filderstadt but it was kim's first tournament back after a ankle injury. Kim did withdraw from the lead up events on the hardcourts but she gave Ai plenty of notice and time to find someone else to play with. So Miami was the only tournament she really withdrew from and kind of left Ai in the lurch when she withdrew from the semis and duly travelled to Malmo with Lleyton

Kim and Ai are still good friends though, they celebrated their achievements together in LA in kim's hotel room to like 3am right?? If these comments from Ai's mum are true, they are not nice at all nor very sporting

I don't think Ai's mum said that, it's just newspapers trying to make something out of nothing. Like people already wrote, they already said during the Masters they would split up because Kim couldn't/wouldn't commit to a full doubles schedule anymore (which is very wise I think).
But then we all know by now that newspapers are not always correct, isn't it?

Sometimes things get lost in translation though and those comments from Ai's mum have probably come from japanese to dutch to english so she might not have meant it quite like that.
I don't think it's really surprising though because Ai is more of a doubles specialist and needs a partner to play in all the tournmaments whcih Kim won't do because she concentrates on singles. I doubt there is any nastiness in the split at all.
