Did Kim underachieve to win only 1 slam title?

Do you think Kim Clijsters underachieved to win only 1 slam title? It seems to me she did. She was in 12 slam semis total, 5 slam finals total, but only managed 1 slam title. I am not looking to diminish her career since she still had a wonderful career, but do you feel she underachived to win only 1 slam title.

I will point out the matches that come to most for me:

2001 French Open final- Capriati served to stay in the match 3 time. Kim was not able to muster enough in any of those games. Kim gradualy let go control of that match after a dominating first set.

2002 Australian Open semis- Clijsters could have easily won the first set but just missed losing 7-5, then won the 2nd, but folded a bit in the 3rd. I think she had great shot of beating Hingis in the final, although that also would be a close call.

2003 Australian Open semis- Obviously Kim had Serena on the ropes and should have won, but choked the match away a bit. Still Venus in the final she probably would still be underdog, although a close call.

2003 Wimbledon semis- Definitely should have finished off injured Venus Williams. Got tight and lost a set and being up a break twice in the 2nd. Would be big underdog vs Serena in final on grass, but Serena played kind of a bad final for her but maybe that is because Venus was injured and she played a pity match to not crush her?

2003 U.S Open final- Justine needed IVs after her incredible and grueling semifinal win over Capriati. Justine was not moving anywhere near her normal and clearly physicaly depleted. Kim totally wasted this opportunity, of course as a Justine fan I was thrilled, especialy to see her amazing effort vs Capriati go rewarded with the title, but Kim really let a physicaly depleted Justine off the hook here.

Yes, I think she could have won more slams. I think AO 2006 and 2007 escaped her because of injuries.

2000-2007: My "Kim years". My best years as a tennis fan. A few bitter losses but a lot of great matches and great wins. Thank you, Kim Clijsters!
26.03.2009: More Kim years to come!

Based on the amount of talent that she had/has, I would say yes. I think we all anaylsed Kim re GS performances till the cows came home during her career. I think the general consensus is: yes she probably should have won more, yes she did tighten up quite a few times, yes we all came to expect it , but in the end, she got one so we were happy

and good to see someone else posting here

I think Kim definitely underachieved, she was unlucky in quite a few matches, and I too think she missed her golden opportunity to win her first US Open in 2003. Either player could've won the first set, it went to the mentally stronger player, but Kim just folded in the 2nd set

Never mind though, Kim was in a lot of classic matches, she's a former number one and US Open champion. We'll always have great memories of her

With her great talent, Kim could have won much more slams.
But I'm happy she won at least one.

Re: Did Kim underachieve to win only 1 slam title?

Kim was simply not a one-slam player. She could have EASILY had five grand slams under her belt. In 2001, that could have been ANYONE. The 2003 French Open Final was all nerves from Kim. I mean, 6-0 in the first set??? Then in the 2003 US Open Final, had it been any other opponent, Kim would have won. Psychologically, Kim didn't handle losing the first set. Then the 20004 Australian Open Final... God. I personally can't blame Kim for that. She had a chance to win 4 games in a row that third set being down 4-0, but then got that TERRIBLE call. But Kim was an AMAZINGGGGGG sport about it. One of the reasons I love her. Had it been me, I would have been fined quite a few dollars after that call.

So yeah, Kim did underachieve. But it doesn't make me like her any less.
The Wimbledon semifinal against Venus kinda sucked, especially since the rain delay helped Venus all she neeeded. Had there been no rain delay, Kim would have won, probably. NO COMMENT for that Australian Open match
