Hong Kong Exibition 2006: draw, articles,...

To relief the withdrawal symptoms some seem to experience: the first tournament thread of the new season!

Nobody seems to have noticed yet, but the first matches of the Hong Kong Exo are known.
Kim is playing Jie Zheng january 6th.
BUT! She's also playing doubles with Sania Mirza
First match against Williams/Williams, january 5th

Does this tourny have a livestream?

First match of the tournament is Serena against Elena D., that'll be january 4th.

Here's the website of the tournament:

http://www.watsonswaterchallenge.com/eng/home/index.asp

I just love the intro "Kim Clijsters US Open Champion"

But how they can put "Lindsay Davenport world N° 3" is beyond me

Because she was the number 3 when the site was launched. maria was 1, Kim was 2, and Lindsay was 3. It was either the week of Filderstadt or Moscow.

Well yes, I assumed that was the reason. But you could expect them to update something like that, no?

I've checked out the tourny website but did not find any matchups there. Where did you get them?

2000-2007: My "Kim years". My best years as a tennis fan. A few bitter losses but a lot of great matches and great wins. Thank you, Kim Clijsters!
26.03.2009: More Kim years to come!

Kim's matches are on her site, the Serena-Elena match apparently was announced as first match of the tournament, I got that from GM. Other matches are indeed not announced yet.

Is it correct that none of us (in Europe at least) will get any TV coverage of this event?

Patiently waiting to join the silver surfers

Stars Clash in Opening Rounds!
December 5th, 2005 Organisers of the Watsons Water Champions Challenge 2006 announced the Tournament Draw for the popular January 4th - 7th event. The Draw departs from its traditional format, but the new format will enable the fans to see matches, which are even more competitive!

Co-Tournament Director Terry Catton explained, “All eight players will compete in a quarter finals draw. The winners of each match will then go into the Gold Group and the losers will go into the Silver Group. Then, in each Group there will be two semi finals and a final, resulting in a Gold Group Champion and a Silver Group Champion. The beauty of this format is that each player has an incentive to keep fighting even if she gets knocked out at the quarter final stage. In addition to the Singles competition, there will also be a Doubles competition, so the fans will see all the players at least three times.”

Organisers have seeded Lindsay Davenport No. 1 and Kim Clijsters No. 2. They are destined to meet in the final. However, Catton went on to say, "When you look at the Draw you can see just how strong the field is, because any one of these players is capable of beating the other. For example, Venus Williams plays Sania Mirza in her first match, and Venus will wonder how tough that's going to be! Very tough, I would say! And to see the defending champion Elena Dementieva taking on Serena Williams in the tournament's opening match probably says it all. This has got to be the toughest field we've ever had."

Organisers have scheduled exciting matches on each day of the event, climaxing with four semi-finals on what will be known as "Super Friday". There, fans will see the two Gold Group semi-finals and the two Silver Group semi finals. On Saturday January 7th , the tournament finals will be played to include the Gold Group final, the Silver Group final and the Doubles final.

Matches on each day start at slightly different times, to accommodate the new format. Wednesday, the first day, will see the Opening Ceremony take place at 6pm, with all players attending. The ceremony provides an exciting start to the event. Then on Thursday it's a 6.30pm start, and on Friday matches will start at 4:30pm. The Saturday finals begin at 2.30pm.

Organisers also announced details of ticket sales. Tickets for the event go on sale at all Urbtix outlets from Tuesday December 6th. Prices range from HK$280 to HK$680. Terry Catton said "Fans can buy tickets on the first two days at only HK$280. This is fantastic value, especially when you can see players of this caliber. Inner ring tickets are a bit more expensive, but overall the event gives fans real value for money!"

The Watsons Water Champions Challenge 2006 takes place from January 4th -7th at Victoria Park, and features eight world-class stars, headed up by World No. 1 Lindsay Davenport and World No. 2 Kim Clijsters.
