Why he might be annoying
He failed to show for an interview with ESPN at the 2002 Tennis Master Series (Cincinnati) and the ATP Tour issued to him a fine for half of the money he earned at that tournament ($105,650). He appealed the fine, and it was reduced to $20,000 (January 2003).
After failed attempts to rescind the fine, Hewitt threatened to sue the ATP Tour for $1.5 million, claiming the ATP defamed him in media statements and breached their contract with him (April 2003).
Due to his rocky relationship with the ATP, he has lent financial and moral support to a breakaway tennis faction, the IMTA.
During his match against James Blake, he claimed that a black linesman made bad calls against him, because both the linesman and his opponent were black (September 2001).
While playing, he wears his cap backwards (what's the point?).
He angers other players when he pumps his fist after opponent errors.
His fans call him 'the Potato' and when someone beats him, his haters referred to that player as 'the Potato Peeler.'
Why he might not be annoying
He's dating Kim Clijsters (a.k.a. the Potatoette
), a top player on the women's tour.
He performs charity work for the Special Olympics.
He's considered the fastest and most fierce competitor on the ATP Tour.
He was the second man (the first being Marat Safin) to defeat Pete Sampras in straight sets in a major final (2001 U.S. Open).
Despite his tough schedule, he takes time to represent Australia in Olympic and Davis Cup competition.
Do people really call Kim the Potatoette? Never heard that one!
