Hi, everybody!

Just popping in to say that i temporarily quit posting 19th century Wimbledon results i have (remember, don't you?)

because i was thinking that inserting ALL results in a single thread is becoming too chaotic.
And basically impossible to consult.
Let alone to search for.
Absolutely unthinkable.
Don't you think so?

i know Rollo is thinking of alternatives (you are, aren't you?) , but i think it'd be better, in the meantime, to choose a different way to post.
What about setting a thread for each slam?
Even sub-threads for each category
(singles, doubles, juniors)?
Would it be possible to contact the administrator to open a new section devoted to "results" with links and sublinks?

And what do you think of even setting up a site of our own in direct competion with "tenniscorner" and thus including ALL results from ALL times?
If you think it's not an absurd idea, i volunteer for the webspace and to become one of the founders.

If you think i'm wrong, just let me know, and i'll simply get back to posting Wimbledon 18xx results.

Now i'm off for this year schooltrip (one week in Praha).
I'll read your (numerous) when i'm back.

Congratulations for the job, in the meantime, and take care.

P.S. Brian, is that you in the avatar?
I'd have said you were uglier!

What you say makes sense Way If we do it here we need to reorganize by slam and year.
If you start or others handle the technical side I'll gladly "feed" results and research on results. Tenniscorner sounds interested, but I'll go with the majority decision on this

How about both? Send results to Tennis Corner and set up our own site. We could include whatever we wanted.

My dream is as ambitious as Rollo's. I'd like to have every result, singles, doubles, qualifying, junior singles, junior doubles, plate events, for every women's tournament ever held. (World tour, challenger, etc., 18's, 16's, 14's, etc.) That's probably not achievable, as many results are undoubtedly lost. But we could probably make one hell of a run at it. I see no reason why we couldn't have at least a complete set of post WWII results.

As for the site itself, I wonder if it could be founded as an historical site, possibly with some kind of funding/grants (government or private) to pay for setup/operating/maintenance costs. Said grants could conceivably pay for the rights to use photos (from Allsport, Reuters, AP, AFP, etc.) on the site. Can you imagine a huge database with all of those results, searchable by player, event (singles, doubles, juniors), head-to-head, surface, country, etc.? It would be the ultimate tennis site. It could, perhaps, be updated once a week, when the tournaments are finished. Jannak, Michael Blue, Aceman, Tennis Corner, et al, can handle the daily updates.

If the site includes some sort of online publication, it could send reporters to some tournaments via media passes, and get news, interviews, and other exclusives. I'll bet the lower-level events (like challengers) would welcome any type of coverage.

In addition to the current crew scouring their books and magazines, we need people checking their local newspapers. We could contact the webmasters at various player sites who have some results, and see if they have full draws, or just results for that player. National Federations could be contacted, as well as regional ones (such as USTA sections), and the local newspapers in areas where tournaments are held. We'd probably be surprised at some of the info we'd get. Perhaps even some bio data on oscure players. And, of course, we could contact the people that run the tournaments.

Some website hosts allow a certain number of email boxes with them. Perhaps these could be used when soliciting information, as the "official" women's tennis history project.

I'm going to think long and hard on that post Brian-maybe we can get some grant money if we find the right source.

Tennis Corner wants any slam results we have-but only singles
My take on that is I'll give them what I've got when we're done.
Pooh on them.

Way made lots of sense with his post. I put up an Aussie thread-and though it looks silly and blank now, with the way it's set up I can copy, paste and edit til it's full. If we can put up info from all slams here as we have been, and THEN by year in separate threads, we can clealry see what's there and not.

I'll do the French thread too if that's ok-I've got some French Open results going back BEFORE 1925(the usual histories have forgotten some!).

This leaves Wimbledon and the US Open. Intersted Brian?

Tennis Corner probably has some limits on space which they don't want taken up by doubles. Or else they figure people don't care.

It's a good idea for the seperate threads for results. When the thread starters (us) add any results, we can just stick them in there, and leave this thread for the results for the other's threads, and for other posters to add in. With our "one stop shopping", posters can quickly determine which results we have, and which we need.

One more thought about the tournament threads: how about if we make seperate threads for events? I was thinking, instead of 4 threads (which would be heavily loaded), we'd split, say, the US Open into "US Open Singles", "US Open Doubles", and likewise with the Qualifying, Junior Singles, and Junior Doubles. Sure, that would result in 20 threads instead of 4, but once they're established, they'd no longer bump the other threads in this forum down, as we'd only be editing.

The reason I was considering this is that I'd like to split the 64 draws into 2 seperate posts, and the 128 draws into at least 2, maybe 3. If all events are combined on one thread, that would be hundreds of posts. I also think it could make things easier on those who want to check what results we have to just hop in to the appropriate event thread, instead of wading through anywhere from 5-11 posts per year. Plus, with each event in a seperate thread, the individual replies could just be "titled" with a year.

Just a thought. I'll start on the other threads (Wimbledon, USO) tomorrow, when we've made a decision. I'm a little tired today. I'm going to edit the '93 Oz doubles draw (as I did with the '92 USO) from my player guide, to fill in the missing tiebreak scores.

No Juniors draws for Oz '93. Just the finals. Heike Rusch d. Andrea Glass, 6-1, 6-2, in an all-German singles final. In doubles, Joana Manta(SUI)/Ludmila Richterova(TCH) d. Asa Carlsson/Catarina Cristea 6-3, 6-4.

Names from the OZ doubles draw:

Ayako Hirose JPN
Sabine Lohmann GER
Kate McDonald AUS
Louise Stacey AUS
Nathalie Tschan SUI

Separate threads for singles and doubles is fine by me Brian. I might keep the Aussie singles and doubles together at first and separate them later-for older years it helps me to keep the names straight.
One way or another, we'll get there on this

A good field with 5 top notch Brits because of the
Wightman Cup.

May Sutton was US champ in 1904! This is her last US
Nationals at age 42. Surely one of the oldest seeds.

Shepherd-Baron is the only foreign entry unseeded. She
was considered a doubles specialist.

9,000 saw the finals.

Brian/rollo ..... another idea is to put each slam in its on thread and in chronological order

mix 'n match gets too much for the eye.
if not then color code the events

Good luck to my favs
