US Doubles at Longwood

Traditionally the Women's Doubles and Mixed Doubles were held with the singles at Philadelphia. In 1921 the Women's National Championships was moved to Forest Hills. It was decided at this time to peal off the Mixed Doubles and hold it with the Men's Doubles at Longwood Cricket Club near Boston.

This arrangement would last until 1935, when the Women's Doubles also came to Longwood. World War Two upset this order when all 5 events were played at Forest Hills, made possible by smaller draws with so many men off to war.

From 1946 to 1967 all the doubles, including mixed, were once again at Longwood. Open tennis put a final end to the Longwood epoch. From 1968 all five events would be held at one venue.

A summary of the "Longwood years."

1921-1933-- Mixed Doubles Championships (Singles and Doubles at Forest Hills)
1934--------Mixed Doubles at Philadelphia
1935-1941-- Doubles and Mixed Doubles (Singles at Forest Hills)
1942-1945---All events at Forest Hills due to World War II)
1946-1966-- Doubles (Singles and Mixed Doubles at Forest Hills)
1967--------Doubles and Mixed Doubles (Singles at Forest Hills)
1968 to now-All events at Forest Hills, then Flushing Meadows)

With the women's championships moving to Forest Hills the USTA decides to award the mixed doubles to Longwood, where it will remain for many years in conjunction with the men's doubles.

In the final Mary K Browne delighted the gallery by her wonderful gets off of rockets fired her way by "Big" Bill Tilden. Her net skills in comparison to Molla Mallory made the difference in a close 3 setter.

Summary:

5,000 filled the stadium past capacity for the final, with many standing on chairs to see action. This was all despite rain all morning. Luckily tarps were on the ground and the rain stopped.

Molla and Bill had two legs on permanent possession of the cup. After two tense sets Wills and Richards ran away with the third. Wills stood up to Big Bill's thunderous serves, and Richards scored time and again with winning volleys.

In the semis Jean Borotra was the fan favorite with his wicked assortment of spins, cut volleys, and overheads. With Hazel Wightman below form he was forced to cover most of the court vs Mallory and Tilden, who did not have to cheat so much as Molla held up better than Hazel. The climactic game was at 4-4 in the second set. Jean and Hazel had game point 5 times without being able to close it out. After 22 points French flair flickeed, Borotra was broken, and Tilden served out the match with an ace.

Draw Notes:

The event proper (which included the Men's US Doubles title) started on August 30. September 1 saw the first mixed matches go on court.

The entry of the Frenchmen known as "The Four Musketeers" adds spice and interest to the draw. This is also the first US Mixed for expat American Elizabeth Ryan.

Comments on names and players

Martha Carey called "Miss Carey by the NYT in mixed results but "Martha" in invitational doubles.
Martha Niles=Mrs Nat Niles Her son Nat Niles Jr (born circa 1913) plays in the father/son event with her husband.

Sources:

The New York Times

---------------------------------------

Summary:

5,000 see the finals.

The Ryan/Borotra vs Mallory/Tilden semi was the match of the week. There is no real love lost between Ryan and Mallory. To add fuel Molla had won the US title recently by saving a match point vs Elizabeth in the final. Here at Brookline Jean Borotra errs again and again as his team drops the first set. Tilden threw himself seep across to cut off shots directed at Molla, the weakest volleyer of the four. But the "Bounding Basque" flashes about the court the rest of the match as the standard of play rose. Fans gave the quartet loud ovations throughout, with Ryan and Borotra barely coming through.

Summary:

Overall a very weak and slim field that was enlivened by the odd: there were four Palfrey sisters as entrants plus Mrs Maud Barger Wallach, winner of the US singles in 1908!

The defending champions Jacobs and Vines are upset in the finals. In large part it is the sterling play of little Sarah Palfrey that wins it for her team. A Bostonian, pert, and cute, as a local native she naturally has a lot of support at Longwood.

Sarah was somehow able to return the "cannonball" serve of Vines. The Times wrote, "The Boston girl stood up to the fierce drives of Vines in remarkable fashion and won volumes of applause. Perry was in excellent form and showed to better advantage than Vines."

--------------------------------------

Summary:

Usually held near Boston; this year's US Men's and Mixed Doubles title is hosted by the Germantown Cricket Club in Philadelphia. Helen Jacobs and George Lott capture the Mixed after being within two points of defeat. Ryan's volleying and Stoefen's serve blitzed through the first set and got them to 54 in the second. At this stage only some excellent lobs from Lott kept his side in the match. After weathering the storm by a score of 13-11 Jacobs and Lott ran away with the 3rd set.

Jacobs is now the triple champion of the US.
