US Doubles at Longwood

Traditionally the Women's Doubles and Mixed Doubles were held with the singles at Philadelphia. In 1921 the Women's National Championships was moved to Forest Hills. It was decided at this time to peal off the Mixed Doubles and hold it with the Men's Doubles at Longwood Cricket Club near Boston.

This arrangement would last until 1935, when the Women's Doubles also came to Longwood. World War Two upset this order when all 5 events were played at Forest Hills, made possible by smaller draws with so many men off to war.

From 1946 to 1967 all the doubles, including mixed, were once again at Longwood. Open tennis put a final end to the Longwood epoch. From 1968 all five events would be held at one venue.

A summary of the "Longwood years."

1921-1933-- Mixed Doubles Championships (Singles and Doubles at Forest Hills)
1934--------Mixed Doubles at Philadelphia
1935-1941-- Doubles and Mixed Doubles (Singles at Forest Hills)
1942-1945---All events at Forest Hills due to World War II)
1946-1966-- Doubles (Singles and Mixed Doubles at Forest Hills)
1967--------Doubles and Mixed Doubles (Singles at Forest Hills)
1968 to now-All events at Forest Hills, then Flushing Meadows)

Summary:

With the women's championships moving to Forest Hills the USTA decides to award the mixed doubles to Longwood, where it will remain for many years in conjunction with the men's doubles.

In the final Mary K Browne delighted the gallery by her wonderful gets off of rockets fired her way by "Big" Bill Tilden. Her net skills in comparison to Molla Mallory made the difference in a close 3 setter.

Summary:

A full house of 7,000 see a delightfully close and entertaining final. The Times wrote "the gallery was unable to restrain its emotion and broke into cheers." This was especially true when the ladies stood up to the barrage directly at them by the men. Kitty hit several winning volleys and Molla brought off angled passing shot winners.

Summary:

5,000 filled the stadium past capacity for the final, with many standing on chairs to see action. This was all despite rain all morning. Luckily tarps were on the ground and the rain stopped.

Molla and Bill had two legs on permanent possession of the cup. After two tense sets Wills and Richards ran away with the third. Wills stood up to Big Bill's thunderous serves, and Richards scored time and again with winning volleys.

In the semis Jean Borotra was the fan favorite with his wicked assortment of spins, cut volleys, and overheads. With Hazel Wightman below form he was forced to cover most of the court vs Mallory and Tilden, who did not have to cheat so much as Molla held up better than Hazel. The climactic game was at 4-4 in the second set. Jean and Hazel had game point 5 times without being able to close it out. After 22 points French flair flickeed, Borotra was broken, and Tilden served out the match with an ace.

Draw Notes:

The event proper (which included the Men's US Doubles title) started on August 30. September 1 saw the first mixed matches go on court.

The entry of the Frenchmen known as "The Four Musketeers" adds spice and interest to the draw. This is also the first US Mixed for expat American Elizabeth Ryan.

Comments on names and players

Martha Carey called "Miss Carey by the NYT in mixed results but "Martha" in invitational doubles.
Martha Niles=Mrs Nat Niles Her son Nat Niles Jr (born circa 1913) plays in the father/son event with her husband.

Summary:

5,000 see the finals.

The Ryan/Borotra vs Mallory/Tilden semi was the match of the week. There is no real love lost between Ryan and Mallory. To add fuel Molla had won the US title recently by saving a match point vs Elizabeth in the final. Here at Brookline Jean Borotra errs again and again as his team drops the first set. Tilden threw himself seep across to cut off shots directed at Molla, the weakest volleyer of the four. But the "Bounding Basque" flashes about the court the rest of the match as the standard of play rose. Fans gave the quartet loud ovations throughout, with Ryan and Borotra barely coming through.

Summary:

Overall a very weak and slim field that was enlivened by the odd: there were four Palfrey sisters as entrants plus Mrs Maud Barger Wallach, winner of the US singles in 1908!

The defending champions Jacobs and Vines are upset in the finals. In large part it is the sterling play of little Sarah Palfrey that wins it for her team. A Bostonian, pert, and cute, as a local native she naturally has a lot of support at Longwood.

Sarah was somehow able to return the "cannonball" serve of Vines. The Times wrote, "The Boston girl stood up to the fierce drives of Vines in remarkable fashion and won volumes of applause. Perry was in excellent form and showed to better advantage than Vines."

--------------------------------------

Summary:

Usually held near Boston; this year's US Men's and Mixed Doubles title is hosted by the Germantown Cricket Club in Philadelphia. Helen Jacobs and George Lott capture the Mixed after being within two points of defeat. Ryan's volleying and Stoefen's serve blitzed through the first set and got them to 54 in the second. At this stage only some excellent lobs from Lott kept his side in the match. After weathering the storm by a score of 13-11 Jacobs and Lott ran away with the 3rd set.

Jacobs is now the triple champion of the US.

The USTA has decided to combine the men's and women's championships at Forest Hills into the same time period. With a busy schedule at the New York Venue they opt to move the ladies doubles to Longwood with the men's doubles and mixed doubles.

This arrangement will last until 1968, when under Open tennis all five championship events move back to Forest Hills. The only exception to this is from 1942 through 1945, when slim men's draws due to World War II allow all five events to be at Forest Hills.

Summary:

4,200 appear for the women's final on the 25th, 3,500 for the mixed semis, and 3,000 the final day for the men's and mixed finals. Sarah Palfrey Fabyan wins both titles. This is the 3rd year in a row Sarah and Helen have walked away with the doubles crown.

There were 9 breaks in the women's doubles final, a disappointing match overall. Sarah was the best of the four with her volleys dominating the court after a sloppy first set; with Helen Jacobs keeping her team in points with defensive gets.

Top foreign seeds (and Wimbledon winners) James and Stammers were upset in the semis by Andrus and Babcock, who played the more aggressive brand of tennis at the end of ech set. Fabyan and Jacobs topped the 2nd ranked British pair of Dearman/Lyle 8-6 6-4 in an encounter containing 14 service breaks out of 24 games played.

Summary:

Top seeds and 3 time champions Sarah Palfrey Fabyan/Helen Jacobs are beaten in a thriller of a final held on a Monday.

"The flashing racquet of the dark haired California girl was dealing out heavy execution from every quarter, putting the defenders under a pressure that caused them to falter at vital junctures." Carolin's forehand stung, and her overheads and volleys stood up as well. Midge was missing badly on the backhand volley, "her specialty", but proved more solid as the match wore on. It was Van Ryn's volleys in rat a tat exchanges at net that prevailed in the exciting last minutes.

The winners gained healthy applause from a crowd normally partisan in favor of Mrs Fabyan of Boston.

Both of the final teams had to work hard in the semis. Babcock/Van Ryn recovered from 1-4 in set 1 and needed 5 match points to put away Andrus/Henrotin 8-6 6-4. Fabyan/Jacobs won 6-1 21-19 over Marble and Stammers in the longest set in memory. At 10-9 Sarah and Jacobs had 3 match points they couldn't convert. Stammers saved each one with blistering forehands.

In the mixed doubles top seeds Helen Jacobs and Wilmer Allison cruise up to the semis. At that stage rain had washed out play and prompted him to go fishing in Maine to get away. He decides to default in the mixed to concentrate on men's doubles. Miss Jacobs agreed, knowing Allison was near the end of his limits due to an injury. He was unable to defend his men's US singles title the following week. The 2nd semi witnesses a mob scene as 5,000 descend on the Longwood Club. Sunday sports events cannot charge admission by law, so the largest crowd here since the depression surrounds the court. People faint, fall out of trees, and fences come down in the chaos as Sarah Fabyan and Don Budge win a match tame by comparison at 6-3 6-2.

The mixed final is straightforward, as Alice Marble and Gene Mako roll to a 6-3 6-2 win.

Summary:

With many foreign stars on hand 6,000 appear on the last 4 days.

The toughest match defenders Sarah palfrey Fabyan and Alice Marble has was in the semifinals. The #1 British team of Kay Stammers and Freda James shot out to a 4-1 lead in the 2nd set through combination of hard hitting, rushing the net, and volley errors of Sarah's part. The Brits even had a point for 5-1, but failed to close. Matters ended on Stammers' serve and she double faulted and Marble split the middle with a volley for the final point.

In the 2nd semi Carolin Babcock and Midge Van Ryn seemed to have the match in hand when up 6-3 6-2 40-30, only to see the British team of Dearman/Ingram reel off 5 straight games. The Americans regrouped in the final chapter to win 6-3 5-7 6-2. The Times wrote: "The Americans appeared so unnerved by abrupt turn of the tide against them that it was thought they might never collect their forces again. ut, after losing the first game of the final set, they braced and, with Mrs Van Ryn volleying in her best fashion for the first time in the match, put on so much pressure from the net that Miss Ingram and Miss Dearman had to give ground steadily though obstinately in beautiful rallies of sharp, aggressive hitting."

Sarah's volleys and Alice 's serve were a bit too tough for Carolin and Midge in a close 7-5 6-4 final.

Sarah won the mixed for the 3rd time. It was the first mixed title for her partner Don Budge.

Summary:

The 3 set ladies final saved the final day. Hard hitting Pole "Jaja" and the French Simone Mathieu fought hard vs the serve and volley combo of Sarah Fabyan and Alice Marble. By contrast the crowd of 4,000 sat in silence through the men's final, which was a one-sided dud.

Fabyan/Marble led 5-2 at the start and had 2 set points. They failed to convert however, and eventually lost the first set 6-8.

"Mme Mathieu played a beautiful match" reported the Times. "Her lobbing was extraordinarily fine. Her return of service, fading fast across court, trapped Miss Marble repeatedly. She was strong frm both sides and her generalship was to be commended." The Polish/French combo won the first set and looked on the verge of victory when they went from 2-4 to 4 all in the second. Jaja was belting winners with her forehand and scrambling about. Alice and Sarah held on to win the 2nd 6-4 and left court for the 15 minute intermission. This is common in the US but not in Europe, and the volatile Mathieu was visibly upset by the break and was never the same afterwards. Jaja started to make more errors too, and the Yanks pulled out a nail-biter.

"Miss Marble and Mrs Fabyan have seldom had to show their courage as they did in this match. They were braving cannon fire when they went to the net in the face of such hitters as Mlle Jedrzejowska and Mme Mathieu. At times their racquets were almost wrested from their hands by the force of their opponents blows, but they never stopped going forward to get in their volleys and smashes." Sarah won the most enthusiastic applause from an appreciative gallery in getting back the bullets fired from Jaja right at her near the net.

Alice Marble and Don Budge romped in the mixed final over the Aussie team of Thelma Coyne and John Bromwich. The semis and finals were played on the same day. It was a long day for Alice, with 3 matches and 7 sets in one afternoon. The two sets of silverware made it all worth it.

44 games-2 points from defeat in QF. Stammers-Lumb dodged 3 mps in their QF. Henrotin is "feared for her cleverness and her volleying ability." Alice and Sarah sub par.

Summary:

Sarah Palfrey and Alice Marble prove to be the cream of the field for the 3rd straight year.

Alice is devastating throughout. The British team of Freda Hammersley and Kay Stammers put up a tough fight though.Freda used lobs against Sarah. In the end the aggressive Americans get a vital break in each set. Mrs Hammersley used to be Freda James, and is best at doubles. Beauty Kay Stammers is adored by male fans on and off the court-dating future US Senator and President Jack Kennedy.

Summary:

A capacity crowd of about 3,600 watches the doubles semifinals at Longwood. Only half that show for the finals. Marble and Palfrey won for the 5th straight year. This is Palfrey's 8th US doubles crown. The 1st seeded foreign team of Hardwick/Scott go out in the semis to Bundy/Van Ryn, who were the first unseeded pair to reach the ladies doubles final since seeding began.

The 35 minute final had a bit of drama as Bundy and Van Ryn led 4-3 in the first set. Alice was off form and Dodo was on, keeping things close. Bundy fell off in form though, and the superior team won in straights.

Summary:

In a dramatic final "Broughie and Ozzie" edge out rivals Doris Hart and Pat Todd. Louise and Margaret lost a 4-1 lead in the opening chapter. From that stage Pat "began to kill any and all balls within reach." At 6-5 they broke Margaret Osborne's serve with some clever lobbing.

First set Hart and Todd 7-5.

Set two went to Louise and Margaret-who kept up a net attack. As usual Margaret was the most consistent of all the ladies on court. Doris Hart faltered on her serve, and was broke in the 5th and 9th games.

Second set Brough and Osborne 6-3.

The last set was nip and tuck all the way until the final game. The New York Times wrote the crowd was "worked up" in the tense final set. Toddy made 3 volley errors and Hart missed a smash to hand Louise and Margaret their incredible 6th US Doubles title in a row.

The world's #1 doubles team survived a scare in the quarters-where Aussie Nancye Bolton and Virginia Kovacs led a set and 4-3.
