Summary:

This year Longwood hosted all three doubles events-men's. women's and mixed.

In the doubles Nancy Richey withdrew due to injury, leaving her partner Maria Bueno without a partner. Brit Virginia Wade filled in, only to have Bueno default after one round because of intense arm pain. Bueno later withdrew from the US Open, leaving Billie Jean King as the favorite.

3,500 saw the final. Billie Jean was making too many errors early on, and was broken twice as Eisel and Fales kept the ball low on returns. After dropping the opening set it was Casals who kept it all together. She held at the danger point when it was 3-3 and love-thirty on Rosie's serve. 'King was a terror in the final set', turning on all her powers, as 'Mrs King and Miss Casals had the crowd roaring as they hit murderous overheads, slammed their volleys and knocked the ball back like a shot with their topspin forehands.' Eisel and Fales got cheers as they rallied from 1-5 and two match points down but Casals/King held their nerves to win out at 6-4.

Eisel and Fales won their semi by default, Joyce Williams having to scratch after having been in bed two days with a high fever. Her doctor ordered her not to play.

Mixed Doubles (Draw=15)

1st Round

Stephanie DeFina/Donald Dell-bye

Quarterfinals

Semifinals

Final

Mary-Ann Eisel/Peter Curtis d. Tory Fretz/Gerry Perry 6-4 7-5

--------------------------------------------

Draw notes:

Summary:

Doubles played for first time at Forest Hills since the men's and women's events were combined. This probably kept the draw size down-since the US Amateur was held the week before at Longwood. Old timers Pauline Betz and Gussie Moran last entered the US Nationals in the 1940s!

Richey skips the Open after she and the event cannot come to an agreement on "expenses". She is still an amateur.

Draw 15, No seeds, 1 BYE

1st round
Maryna Godwin & Ray Moore d. Linda Tuero & Jim Osborne 7-5, 6-4
Patti Hogan & Paul Sullivan d. Carole Caldwell Graebner & Donald Dell 6-3, 7-5
Tory Fretz & Gerry Perry d. Kristy Pigeon & Paul Hutchins 6-4, 12-10
Laura Rossouw & Tom Gorman d. Kanarek & Joaquin Loyo Mayo 6-3, 4-6, 6-3
Vicky Rogers & Chum Steele III d. Pam Teeguarden & Richard Leach 6-4, 6-1
Peggy Michel & Butch Seewagen d. Julie Heldman & Torben Ullrich 13-11, 6-4
Mary Ann Eisel Curtis Beattie & Peter Curtis d. Kathy Harter & Bailey Brown 4-6, 6-2, 6-3

Quarterfinals
Hogan & Sullivan d. Godwin & Moore 6-4, 10-8
Fretz & Perry d. Rossouw & Gorman 6-1, 6-8, 6-3
Michel & Seewagen d. Rogers & Steele default
Eisel Curtis Beattie & Curtis d. DeFina & Dell 6-3, 4-6, 6-2

Semifinals
Fretz & Perry d. Hogan & Sullivan 6-2, 3-6, 6-4
Eisel Curtis Beattie & Curtis d. Michel & Seewagen 1-6, 6-3, 6-4

NOTES: The 1968 US Mixed is a bit of an oddity. 1968 was the year of the first US Open but just before it, in Boston, the US National Championships were also held, open to amateurs and registered professionals (i.e. pros who were independant and not contracted to the promoters).
The US Open at Forest Hills had no mixed doubles event but the Nationals did and that is it.

With the arrival of Open tennis in 1968 it was decided that the National doubles events would move to Forest Hills.

Partially hedging their bets, the USTA also continued to hold a US National event only for amateurs in 1968 and 1969. Held at Longwood, this was abandoned after two years when it was evident that Open tennis was here to stay.

Re: US Doubles at Longwood

Tennis goes Open in 1968, with the USTA deciding to allow professionals and amateurs to compete together for the title of United States Open champion.

Henceforth the doubles and mixed doubles are combined the singles at Forest Hills.
