Summary:

Louise Brough won the US doubles with Margaret Osborne duPont every year from 1942 to 1950 and was absent in 1951 with an arm injury. Her 1952 defeat in the finals thus breaks an amazing unbeaten streak ending at 45 wins. The Fry/Hart vs Brough/Connolly has been a keen one in 1952, with the pairs head to head standing at 2-2 coming into Longwood. In the final Doris Hart is the standout, with Fry's teamwork they edge out the newly formed team of Brough/Connolly.

3,500 attended on semi and finals days.

It took Brough/Connolly 11 match points to put away Kiner/Long in the semis.

In a stirring doubles final Fry/Hart comeback from 2-5 down, escaping 2 mps at 3-5 with winning volleys. Towards the end lobs wore down the older pair-3 lobs winning vital points at 4-5 to draw even. Doris Hart was brilliant throughout on the half-volley and volley. Dupont also shone, with Fry and Brough the comparatively weaker links, with Fry pulling up form towards the end.

Draw:

In exact draw order using the program for the event.

The NYT gives Sachiko' Kamo's partner as "Mrs Grace Jones"for the 1R, but Raymonde Jones for the 2R. We need to confirm which is correct. The USTA Official Program uses Mrs Grace Jones but also lists her as Mrs G. R. Jones. The "R" is for Raymonde.

Mrs George Rockwell=Lois Rockwell, nee Ladd.
"Kitty" Katherine Stanton=Mrs John Stanton of Chesnut Hill.

-----------------------------------

Sources:

The New York Times
1954 USTA National Doubles program.

-----------------------------------

Summary:

Fry and Hart win the US Doubles for the 4th consecutive year. Fry was "brilliant overhead" according to the New York Times. Shirley's quickness about the court also got her team out of trouble on several point where she tracked down shots then sent up spectacular lobs. Doris Hat passed Brough and duPont several times down the alley off returns.

A full house of 5,000 saw the final.

An odd event took place off court. Joan Ross-Dilley, twin sister of Andy Ross-Dilley, went missing for a couple days. She had left a note for her sister after he pair lost early in. The note complained of a headache due to a fall. Two days later Joan walked into a police station in Burlington, Vermont, declaring she could only remember her first name was Suzanne. Suzanne is in fact her middle name. Joan was returned to her sister's home in Boston under doctor's care and treated for amnesia. Bus tickets indicated Joan had traveled to Buffalo and Albany in New York before going to Vermont

-----------------------------------

Summary:

Brough and duPont are too much for field for the 11th time. The toughest math was in the quarterfinals, where Mexicans Yola Ramirez and Rosie Reyes pushed the legendary Louise and Margaret to 7-5 in the third.

No one could have foreseen that two young senoritas reared on the clay would push grass court legends like Louise and Margaret to the brink. The bubbly and smiling girls led 5-3. They came two points from winning at 5-4 0-30 on duPont' serve. Margaret came up with a marvelous backhand half-volley and dug out the game with her best volleys of the match. Brough was inconsistent at times and decidedly nervous; while the tiny Ramirez and Reyes drew loud applause by winning several rapid fire volley exchanges. Reyes in particular was effective at net.

Fry is missing her usual partner, Doris Hart having retired at the end of 1955. New partner Betty Pratt is good at net but not in the class of Doris Hart. Hopes for a close fight were raised by the fact that Fry and Fry beaten Brough/duPont a week earlier at Essex. Instead the final is a quick rout the New York Times termed "disappointingly one-sided"

The crowd of 4,000 for the final was bested by the 4,500 who came for the semis.

Summary:

Louise Brough and Margaret du Pont walk away with a record 12 US Doubles title. To do so they upend the Wimbledon champions Althea Gibson and Darlene Hard. Gibson and Hard had won 9 consecutive tournaments and 37 matches before their defeat. Rain had delayed the for two days.

In World Tennis Gar Mulloy of Truman that, "Christine gives the ball a solid whack on the forehand, but she covers court poorly." (WT, p 28).

As always Mrs Hazel Wightman housed all the women in her big house.

Summary:

The doubles went to an unseeded team for "the first time in memory" (ever?). Arth and Hard had also never partnered together in any event. 4,500 show for the finals. Hard came "flying in for the volley" behind her returns. Bueno's masculine service motion reminds writer Alison Danzig of Alice Marble, the first women to really serve and volley. Danzig wrote, "Her flashing backhand volley brought envious and admiring comments from Malcolm Anderson, the holder of the American championship. Overhead, her treatment of the ball was drastic."

Summary:

Maria Bueno and Darlene Hard, natural doubles players, overcome the #1 foreign seeds Deidre Catt and Ann Haydon. The British girls are more comfortable on the baseline. "After a shaky start in which there were errors on both sides, Hard and Bueno walked through the match." (p. 46) The victors lost only 8 points in the first set and 13 in the second.

Maria and Darlene have dominated the season to date, this event marking their 15th win in 16 events. "They have been the world's best team ever since they first paired together, but they have never played better than they did at Longwood." (p 46).

It is a pity the US National Girls event is held the same week. Thus several good prospects are unable to play at Longwood, in particular Karen Hantze and Billie Jean Moffitt.

Summary:

Close friends Maria Bueno and Darlene Hard sweep the National doubles. The only set dropped is in the final to Billie Jean Moffitt and Karen Susman. This is the 5th consecutive US doubles for Darlene Hard. "Darlene's spectacular volleying was the deciding factor" in the 3 set match. In the final set.."She was flying about the court and she could not miss with her volley." (WT p 43)

An early upset of note was the victory of Margaret du Pont and Margaret Varner over Justina Bricka and Margaret Smith. Mrs du Pont with her shrewd tactic is still a top notch doubles player two decades after being at or near the top in singles. On wet court played in a drizzle the two Margarets were a game from defeat at 3-5 in the 2nd. Clever chops from du Pont and volleys from Varner were supplemented with lobs from both, confounding their younger and more powerful foes. At 42 games it was the match of the week. Alas for the veterans they could go no further. In semis Billie Jean and Karen easily disposed of the two Margarets.

A record total of 28,500 saw action for the week. The old recored was 26, 500. 5,500 attended on finals day.

Summary:

Moffitt and Susman win in a massive upset before an appreciative crowd of 4,500. Smith and Turner had won 48 consecutive doubles matches up to this point. The Aussies had captured the Italian, French, Wimbledon and many other minor doubles titles during their streak. Lobs played a key in the comeback for the Americans. As crowd excitement mounted the Aussies cracked. The NYT reporter wrote, "Miss Smith's service began to falter and her double faults were costly, as was one by Miss Turner at thre end. The breaks went against the Australians on the netcords

Summary:

Nancy Richey and Carole Graebner surprisingly more than hold their own at net vs volley mavens Billie Jean Moffitt and Karen Susman. The Richet forehand fires rockets. It is this return of serve and her lobs that appear to tilt things to her side in an entertaining 49 minute final on a chilly August afternoon. Susman was the chief target of the lobs, being by far the weaker link on her team this day.

The semi between Carole Graebner/Nancy Richey and Tory Fretz/Juklie Heldman glittered with good play. Fretz was terminal on volleys and Julie scooped up several half volleys; turning them into lob winners. Rapid fire volleys with all 4 at net added to the excitement. The better serving of Graebner and Riche overall won out, as ulie served costly doubles to drop serve and with, the match.

Early on old-timers Buck and Mckean set age records just by being here.
Buck/Mckean is the team of Marjorie Gladman Van Ryn Buck (born 21 June 1908) and Katherine Winthrop McKean (born 17 July 1914). Has there ever been a women's doubles team with a combined age higher than theirs (108) in the main draw of the U.S. Nationals? They were off-and-on partners at this tournament beginning in 1953 and ending in 1965. Gladman Van Ryn Buck played the tournament one more time, with Betty Rosenquest Pratt in 1967.

Gladman Van Ryn Buck won the U.S. nationals with Carolin Babcock in 1936. They beat the formidable team of Helen Jacobs and Sarah Palfrey Fabyan Cooke Danzig in the final 9-7, 2-6, 6-4. She also was the runner-up in 1937 (with Babcock) and 1940 (with Dorothy Bundy Cheney).

Summary:

#2 seeds Rosie Casals and Billie Jean King upset defending champs Maria Bueno and Nancy Richey in the finals in front of 5,000 in the stands.

Despite a 6-3 6-4 score the match lasted a mere 41 minutes. Grass court tennis is fast, and doubles points are short, especially when Rosie and Billie Jean put away so many volleys and overheads.

The somewhat anticlimatic final was the easiest match Casals and King had all week. More entertaining by far was their 3 set semifinal over Durr/Sherriff. Played on a Sunday with 5,500 coming out; this was the largest crowd of the week, and what a show they put on. It was "a match that was sensational for the fury of the hitting in the first set. Miss Durr and Miss Sherriff played their opponents off their feet in the second set, but the Californians came back amazingly to win the first four games of the third with only 4 points, and overcame their foes' strong closing rally." (NYT)

The Cali girls overcame volleyers Abbes/Ziegenfuss 7-9 6-2 8-6 in the quarters. The round before that Patti Hogan and Peggy Michel also pushed Casals/King, with the 17 year old Peggy winning rounds of applause for low skimming returns and trenchant volleys, both assets on Longwood's slick grass.

As usual there was rain, with 2 days totally washed out. Estimated attendance for the week was about 30,000. The longest match of the week by games was in the 3rd round, where Defina/Fretz [10] d. Aucamp/Eisel [5] 4-6 11-9 7-5.
