I feel bad for Paula because she clearly wants to play and be healthy so badly, but her stubbornness in playing here might bite her in the ass in terms of scheduling for next year and potentially her career trajectory.

Had she just shut down after Wimbledon like she should have, she'd have an injury protected ranking if she needed it. Between playing the Aussie and Middle East swings on her own ranking, 8 tournaments with an IPR and wildcards to Madrid + Indian Wells/Washington (two active events where she has been champion), she'd basically be able to take a free swing for 2026.

Instead, she'll likely drop to around #90-100 after Melbourne unless she puts together a good run somewhere. If she doesn't get wins in the first two months of the year, she'll be relying on wildcards to get into almost all WTA events. I truly believe she's too prideful to play qualies and it's not clear if her body could even handle the extra matches.
