I think this is not such a bad result against a decent player Rita has been out of the tour for almost one year, and I know she lost pretty badly in some small events in France to players ranked lower than Selima....I hope she can get her first win soon, hopefully next week she will draw some WC, a win will help her confidence, but I am very glad she is giving tennis another try, I wish her all the very best, she has been soooo unlucky during her career, I am more than sure that she could have won much more in these last 10 years if there were no injuries...

Close match at least so that is encouraging
I doubt she'll get into the US Open main draw but I'm hopeful she'll get into qualies. Anyone know?

It's great to see her back on the tour again after so long, totally agree it was an encouraging result.
I believe she has a main draw place for the US Open due to her special ranking of 98 for her first 6 tournaments back.

Rita will be in the MD at USO, her protected ranking is 98, enough to get her in the MD, though it probably would have been better to play some matches in qualies...I hope she can get some practice next week

here is an article from local newspaper " Il Mattino"

The official news is that Rita will play New Haven, the US Open, then in the Slovenia Open in mid September before deciding her future and whether she will play next year. Although she does not have the pain in her elbow, she doens't know if it's strong enough to play week in week out in order to improve her ranking enough to get into main draws, therefore she may retire at the end of the year. I will let you know as soon as I hear any more news.

I wish Rita all the best.
Hopefully she'll break through against Pastikova and gain some confidence. I'll be there cheering her on.

Sadly Rita's lack of match fitness showed as she lost to Pastikova 6-3 6-7(5)- 3-6, let's hope this match gives her the encouragement to continue playing on the Tour.

That was a close match and even though she lost, I'm happy to see her back on tour.
Vamos Rita

It would appear that this is the last singles Grand Slam match of Rita's career :-(

I saw the match. This was a great opportunity for Rita to win. Pastikova was for the taking but Rita played very defensively and Pastikova, to her credit, came up with just enough in the end to pull it out.
CJ1, I hope you're wrong about Rita retiring. Hopefully her health will hold up and she'll decide to give it another run in 2006. Rita, please don't leave us.
The question I have is how long does Rita have her protected ranking? Will she be able to play the next three slams with it if she decides to continue?

Thanks for the update GoSandrine, I hope she does gain encouragement from her performances in both the singles & doubles at the US Open and continues in 2006. However I did read an interview of her's where she said she thinks she's played in her final Grand Slam tournament, 2 weeks ago she said that she'll make a final decision about her future after playing in the Slovenia Open later this month. Her protected ranking is valid for 8 tournaments.

Bad news, Rita has withdrawn from next week's Slovenian Open, this may mean that she has retired as this was scheduled to be her last tournament before she made a decision about her future. I will post any further news when I hear anything.
