The Official PAW (Pick-A-Winner) Rules and FAQ’s

1. I’m new and I have never played PAW, so how does it work?

PAW is an abbreviation for Pick-A-Winner. It is a game when you predict the winners of matches of your choice during a WTA Tournament. As a PAW player, you are indeed like a WTA player, you will be travelling the PAW circuit each week predicting matches in each tournament. PAW is game in which there is no pre-determined luck or fantasy, your performance is based on your own conscience relative to your fellow PAW competitors.

2. Ok, so I hear something about predicting matches, is there a limit to the number of matches I predict per tournament?

Yes there is a limit.

For:
Grand Slams, you are permitted to 26 picks
Other 128-draw tournaments, you are permitted to 19 picks
One-week 64-draw tournaments, you are permitted to 16 picks
One-week 32-draw tournaments, you are permitted to 13 picks
16-draw tournaments/round-robins, you are permitted to 7 picks.

The number of matches you pick can be from ANY rounds in the main draw. For example for a one-week 32 draw tournament you are allowed 13 picks.
(For instance, you might choose 4 First Round Matches, 4 Second Round matches, 2 Quarter Finals, both Semis and the Final. Or you could choose 12 First Round matches and the Final.)

>> The only stipulation is that you may not make all of your picks in the same round.

3. So how is my performance measured relative to everyone else’s, is it to do with who picks the most correct matches?

NO, your predicting performance at the end of the tournament will be determined and determined only by the Scoring Points that you have compiled throughout the week.

4. So what are these Scoring Points?

For every singles main draw match, there will be scoring points posted in the first post. Here is an example taken from Filderstadt round two in 2003.

The Fixtures and Scoring Points:

Code:
[COLOR=darkgreen]K.Clijsters (1) vs D.Hantuchova..........(6-16)[/COLOR]
[COLOR=darkgreen]P.Schnyder vs A.Mauresmo (5).............(12-8)[/COLOR]
[COLOR=darkgreen]J.Capriati (4) vs M.Pierce...............(5-19)[/COLOR]
[COLOR=darkgreen]M.Maleeva vs C.Rubin (7).................(12-9)[/COLOR]
[COLOR=darkgreen]A.Myskina (8) vs E.Bovina................(7-14)[/COLOR]
[COLOR=darkgreen]A.Sugiyama vs L.Davenport (3)............(13-8) [/COLOR]
The numbers after the fixtures are the Scoring Points. These are the respective points you score for picking each player. So if you pick CLIJSTERS to beat HANTUCHOVA and CLIJSTERS wins then you score 6 points.

But if you pick HANTUCHOVA to win and she wins then you score 16 points. Of course, if you pick HANTUCHOVA and she loses you score nothing at all.

As you have noticed, you get more points for picking low-ranked players than for picking high-ranked players. So for each of your selected matches you can choose to go for a “longshot” or to play it safe.

Let’s say you picked these matches:

PAW04 CLIJSTERS over HANTUCHOVA
PAW05 SCHNYDER over MAURESMO
PAW06 CAPRIATI over Pierce
PAW07 MALEEVA over Rubin
PAW08 BOVINA over Myskina
PAW09 SUGIYAMA over Davenport

nB: Since you are limited to a certain amount of “picks” in a tournament (13 in this particular tournament), in an actual game you may choose to 'pass' on some of these matches.

The Results:

K.Clijsters (1) bt D.Hantuchova 6-1, 6-1
You picked CLIJSTERS so you score 6 points

P.Schnyder bt A.Mauresmo (5) 6-2, 6-2
You picked SCHNYDER so you score 12 points

M.Pierce bt J.Capriati (4) 6-4, 6-2
You picked CAPRIATI so you score 0 points

M.Maleeva bt C.Rubin (7) 6-3, 6-4
You picked MALEEVA so you score 12 points

E.Bovina bt A.Myskina (8) 6-2, 6-3
You picked BOVINA so you score 14 points

L.Davenport (3) bt A.Sugiyama 6-2, 6-4
You picked SUGIYAMA so you score 0 points

So from those six matches, you would have accumulated a total of 6 + 12 + 0 + 12 + 14 + 0 = 44 points. The player with the most points at the end of the tournament is the winner. A 'league table' is maintained and will posted in the first post of the PAW thread throughout that tournament.

4.1 PAW Scoring Points Calculation (for Managers/Players)

Code:
[U]Formula:[/U]

PLAYER'S A ranking pts: A
PLAYER'S B ranking pts: B

Player's A PAW scoring pts: = SQRT (100*B / A) or 10*SQRT(B)/SQRT(A)
Player's B PAW scoring pts: = SQRT (100*A / B) or 10*SQRT(A)/SQRT(B)
(SQRT=square root)

[U]EXAMPLE:[/U]

Rome 2009 Final:

SAFINA, Dinara vs KUZNETSOVA, Svetlana

SAFINA, Dinara - Ranking pts: 8951
KUZNETSOVA, Svetlana - Ranking pts: 4308

SAFINA, Dinara PAW Scoring pts = SQRT (100*4308/8951) = 6.93 = 7
KUZNETSOVA, Svetlana PAW Scoring pts = SQRT (100*8951/4308) = 14.41 = 14

SAFINA, Dinara vs KUZNETSOVA, Svetlana ..........(7-14)

[U]Note:[/U]

1. The ranking list to be used for PAW scoring points is the ranking at the time of the draw.
Normally it's the previous week's ranking (but in Indian Wells and Miami case he draw comes out
AFTER the new ranking is released)

2. Round off all scoring pts to the nearest integer, eg. 10.49 = 10 but 10.50 = 11.

3. In case of unranked player or a player who has less than 40 ranking pts, she is allocated 40 pts
for the calculation of PAW scoring points.
5. How and where do I post my PAW’s (Predictions)?

Once the tournament that you have committed begins (keep reading for instructions of how to commit), go to the PAW thread located in that particular tournament forum (ie if it is Dubai, go to the Dubai tournament forum and then click the PAW Dubai thread). You may also send your picks by PM to the current PAW manager of that tournament.

Study the Fixtures and Scoring Points in the first post and then name your picks. The Fixtures and Scoring Points will appear when the First Round draw is made. You are allowed to post your picks before the Fixtures and Scoring Points have been posted on the thread.

This is how to post your prediction:

PAWn: Player A over Player B

E.g. PAW06 MALEEVA over RUBIN

"n" should indicate which of your 13 chosen fixtures it is. (ie your first chosen fixture should be labelled PAW01 and the last chosen fixture may be labelled PAW13.)

Numbering PAWS not only is important to help the current PAW manager, but also helps you keep track of all your own Picks.

nB:
> You must posted your prediction in the format "PAWn MALEEVA over RUBIN", it must be clearly specified who you have predicted to win. If you posted “PAWn MALEEVA vs RUBIN,” this pick would be deemed invalid. You are also required to specify the full surname of the players - no abbreviations or nicknames please.

> You cannot post two PAW picks for the same match. i.e. PAW10 Safina over Kuznetsova, PAW11 Kuznetsova over Safina. In this case, both picks will be declared invalid and may be replaced.

6. What happens when wtaworld.com is slow or down?

In this extreme situation, you may post your PAW picks onto the PAW Emergency Forum at the following web address: http://www.pawforum.ovh.org/ ; please remember to include your tennisforum.com username.

It is not permitted that players allow other PAW players to post PAW's for them, all PAW's submitted must be that player's account.

7. Is it correct that I have to post my PAW’s before that match has started, would my PAW still be valid if I posted my PAW during the first few games?

NO, All picks must be made before the match begins. If there is a chance the match had started when the Pick was posted then that Pick cannot be accepted. This rule is applied very strictly.

PAW Managers are encouraged to use the start times of WTA matches listed on http://www.xscores.com/tennis website when determining late picks.

8. Would a PAW become invalid if a player withdrew from their match?

This depends:
> If the player withdrew before the match and not one single point was completed, the PAW would be invalid and players are allowed to make a replacement PAW.

> If the player withdraws from the match after one point has been played, the PAW is declared valid and the final result of the match will count.

9. What if a player withdraws from the final (before the match), would that make the last pick invalid and mean I would go throughout the tournament only picking 12 matches, rather than the maximum 13?

Yes, this is an unfortunate circumstance. If it is impossible to make a replacement PAW it is unfortunate and no Scoring Points are awarded. This rule applies to all matches not played (e.g. matches cancelled due to rain).

10. What if I change my mind after I make my PAW, can I change it?

It is strongly encouraged that you make up your mind before you pick. However you are allowed to make replacement PAWS as long as it is posted before the match and it most be specified in a new post. You MUST NOT edit your original post, since this is not efficient for the PAW manager in compiling your picks.

11. What if a draw change occurred, that affected my pick, would that make it invalid?

Yes, however you are again permitted to post a replacement PAW that must be specified in a new post rather than editing the original one.

nB: Once a Pick is posted in the PAW thread, it may not be changed or deleted.

Players who are found to have edited or deleted any posts may be immediately excluded from that particular PAW tournament. Any attempt by a player to cheat whilst playing PAW will result in a lengthy or permanent ban from playing PAW.

The PAW Manager frequently takes copies of the thread text at regular intervals and the Picks are entered into a database. Moderators also frequently check the PAW threads for deleted posts.

12. Am I permitted to play under two or more accounts in PAW?

In order to retain the integrity and spirit of PAW, this is not allowed. Players that appear to be suspicious of having accounts transmitting from the same IP, will have their IP’s checked from the tennisforum.com webmasters and could risk being suspended in PAW.

The previous requirement that you must be a member on tennisforum.com for at least 2 months to play PAW and also have at least 100 posts is NO LONGER APPLICABLE. New forum members can join the PAW game immediately.

Re: The League Table

Each player's points are tallied and the player with the most points at the end of the tournament is declared the winner. In the event of a points tie for position, the tiebreak rule will be applied as detailed Section 14 below. The 'League Table' is maintained daily by the PAW Manager throughout the tournament.

Here's an example from end of the Sparkassen Cup in Leipzig, tournament:

> Under the far left column represents the league table position of that player, which usually changes on daily basis.

> Under the “P” column are the total number of picks made of that player at a certain time (ie – after the QF or after the whole tournament). This column is important for players to check out how many picks they have left.

> Under the “W” column are the number of picks that player has made correctly. This has no bearing on their final league table position, remember only the total amount of points are considered.

> Similarly, under the “L” column are the number of picks the player has made incorrectly.

> Under the “Pts” column is the total number of points the player has gained through the scoring points of the matches. Again this is continually changing until the final day.

nB:
> (n) denotes the seed of that player, which like the WTA Ranking system is determined through the player’s PAW ranking as of the previous week. Seeded players are not advantaged in any way.

> (WC) represents that that particular player has requested a wildcard to enter the tournament, see the section of commitments for more details about Wildcards.

Re: Rankings

The PAW Ranking System closely mirrors the WTA Ranking System. Ranking Points are awarded according to positions in the Final League Table of each tournament.

12. How do I find out my PAW Ranking?

The PAW Ranking will be updated on a weekly basis (unless there are no tournaments completed that week). The Rankings can be viewed in the PAW Ranking Thread, which will be located in the PAW forum.

Here is an example of the PAW Ranking (Only top 20 listed) taken from the end of 2012.

> The column under “-#--” denotes the rank of that respective player.

> The column under “Pre#-” denotes the previous rank of that respective player a week ago.

> The column under “NAT” represents the country of that respective player.

> The column under “#” represents the total number of tournaments that player has participated in a 52 week cycle.

> The column under “NEW” denotes the latest ranking points total for that player.

> The column under “OLD” denotes the previous weeks ranking points total for that player.

> The column under “16th” denotes the 16th best tournament total of that player.

> The column under “17th” denotes the 17th best tournament total of that player. This point total is not added to the PAW Ranking total, however it will be for example when the player loses ranking points (let’s say their 10th best tournament points) from a year ago, and then the 11th best tournament would turn into their 10th best, and their 17th best would become their 16th best etc…

> The column under “Added” indicates the number of ranking points that that player has gained from the past week (all ranking points received each week will be entered in a database for each player)

> The column under “N.Off” represents the number points that player will lose the next week (also known as points to defend) as a result for their tournament performances from exactly a year ago.

13. How are ranking points distributed?

For example for an International Ranked tournament, ranking points are offered to the following places as follows:

Code:
1st --- 280 ...... 13th --- 38 ...... 25th --- 18 ...... 37th ---- 6
2nd --- 200 ...... 14th --- 36 ...... 26th --- 17 ...... 38th ---- 6
3rd --- 148 ...... 15th --- 34 ...... 27th --- 16 ...... 39th ---- 5
4th --- 116 ...... 16th --- 32 ...... 28th --- 15 ...... 40th ---- 5
5th ---- 94 ...... 17th --- 30 ...... 29th --- 14 ...... 41st ---- 4
6th ---- 82 ...... 18th --- 28 ...... 30th --- 13 ...... 42nd ---- 4
7th ---- 70 ...... 19th --- 26 ...... 31st --- 12 ...... 43rd ---- 3
8th ---- 60 ...... 20th --- 24 ...... 32nd --- 11 ...... 44th ---- 3
9th ---- 52 ...... 21st --- 22 ...... 33rd --- 10 ...... 45th ---- 2
10th --- 48 ...... 22nd --- 21 ...... 34th ---- 9 ...... 46th ---- 2
11th --- 44 ...... 23rd --- 20 ...... 35th ---- 8 ...... 47th ---- 1
12th --- 40 ...... 24th --- 19 ...... 36th ---- 7 ...... 48th ---- 1
14. What happens if I finish equal 3rd with two other players, does that mean the 3rd, 4th and 5th position are determined through who has the best win-loss ratio?

No, the following Tie-Break rule will be used from the start of the 2013 season:-

Tie-Break

In case several players have the same number of points in the final League Table, the following rules will be used to determine their final ranking:-

1. The greater number of won picks.
If there is still a tie then:
2. The greater points of a single pick.
If there is still a tie then the greater second-best pick, and so on.
Note - A No pick will be considered better than 0 pts.
3. If there is still a tie then players will stay tied.

15. What happens if I do actually finish tied with another player, e.g. 10th position. Does that mean we both earn 32 ranking points that week?

No, players who cannot be separated by the Tie-Break rule above, are awarded “average ranking points.”

For example if two players finish equal 10th, each would earn ( 32 + 29 ) / 2 = 30.5 points (see the above table). If say three players finished equal 10th, each would earn ( 32 + 29 + 26) / 3 = 29 points.

16. Are the games PAW(s) Doubles, PAW ITF and PAW Qualifying related to this game?

No, and they never will be. These game are run by different people and have different rules.

17. OK, I’ve read everything and understood it and I would like to play, so what do I do now?

Just go to the current PAW commitment thread which is located in the PAW forum and post, “I commit to….,” the tournaments available, that can be seen on the first post of that thread. You must have posted a commitment before the deadline (which will normally be 9pm CET on the evening before the start of main draw play or else you will have to apply for a wildcard). Remember you can play just one PAW game at a time. Even when more than one tournament is run simultaneously, and there are PAW games for each of them, you must commit to one tournament.

-~-

Final Re: Commitments/Wildcards

18. Commitments:

All players that have committed to a PAW tournament before the deadline may enter, those players that haven't committed may apply for a Wildcard (See below).

The deadline for commitments will normally be 9pm CET on the evening before the start of main draw play (i.e. 9pm CET Sunday evening for a Monday main draw start).

A minimum of 12 commitments is required before the deadline for a PAW tournament to go ahead. Where a tournament fails to reach 12 commitments, then players will be automatically transferred to an alternative PAW tournament that week.

PAW tournaments which do not have a manager allocated will be cancelled 24 hours before the commitment deadline for that tournament and all players who have committed to that tournament will be moved to alternative PAW tournament which does have a manager.

19. Wildcards (WC):

If you fail to commit to a PAW tournament before the commitment deadline, then you may ask the PAW Manager for a Wildcard by posting a 'WC request' on that particular PAW tournament thread.

NB.
The number of Wildcards per tournament which may be issued by the manager is now UNLIMITED. A player may only receive a maximum of 2 Wildcards per calendar year. The PAW Manager will allocate a Wildcard, providing that WC request is valid and that the player has not already used their 2 Wildcards in that calendar year. To assist managers and players, the number of Wildcards used by the PAW players in a calendar year are logged in the Monthly PAW Commitments Thread list in post #1.

If a player posts PAW picks without a commitment or a WC request, then the PAW Manager shall automatically allocate a Wildcard to any ‘non-committed’ player who post picks onto the tournament thread. (providing that a player is eligible to receive a Wildcard).

Good work Spikey!

I have a reservation about rule #10 concerning changing of picks. This should not be allowed in the latter stages of a tournament, as players may take advantage of knowing what other players posted... you see what I mean?

> If the tournament does not provide live scores, the Closing Time for each match will determined by a formula, which is based on the total number of games played in earlier matches in the same session. Basically, three minutes are allowed for each game plus 10 minutes for each break between matches.
no offence but this rule is stupid. a match hasn't even started and people paw it when the match before it is still going on. i think it's really unfair but i can understand why it is too much for the managers to handle with picks coming flying in 10 minutes before a match. i still think this rule needs to be changed though because it's a little unfair especially when a match hasn't even started and it is invalid.
