Serena on 'Street Time' October 22
Serena Williams Gets Part on Showtime
By The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES - Serena Williams (news - web sites) will play a reformed gang member on parole in an Oct. 1 episode of the Showtime series "Street Time."
"As a fan of `Street Time,' I told myself that if given the opportunity, I'd love to be on the show," Williams said Wednesday. "I am taking this role very seriously, because I want to excel and because I have respect for the series."
The world's top-ranked women's tennis player had the role created for her, said Richard Stratton, the cable show's co-executive producer.
"Anyone that has seen Serena perform on the tennis court understands her commitment to being the best," he said. "We are confident that she will bring that same type of energy and devotion to `Street Time.'"
Williams has appeared in TV commercials with her sister, Venus, and played a kindergarten teacher last year in an episode of the ABC sitcom "My Wife and Kids."
"Street Time," starring Rob Morrow (news), begins its second season Aug. 6.

I think it's gr8. But surprise, surprise: on "racist friendly" boards like http://www.gotennis.com the episode's theme has generated mockery and even hate, like "to play a reformed street thug, all she has to do is act naturally", etc. BTW, don't be fooled by the str8 news aspect of the homepage, which is done by a news service for them. And while the owner has never said anything racist, the "charter member" (a spoiled rich brat whose family may well have a financial stake in the co., a tennis tour operator) certainly is (albeit thinly vieled, like calling Serena The Schoolyard Bully, yes, in bold type; and using signatures like Are the Williams Sisters Good for Tennis?) Drop "Rational Danny" a line (mulder_xf@webtv.net) and congragulate him in advance on Kim's temporary "ascent to the top" after next week. And give him my regards!

title changed to reflect change in airtime.
Serena films her expanded role on September 8th and the airdate is October 22nd. Reset your VCR timers.
