Soccer: how's the transfer market in your country?

I don't really understand why they say the transfer market is still down, I mean, ok there aren't so many big transfers over the world, but Beckham to Real and Ronaldinho to Barca aren't small transfers!

Also, a lot is happening in the Netherlands; Ajax sold Chivu and Van der Meyde, and bought Sonck, Escude and Grygera, Feyenoord sold Kalou, Emerton, Van Hooijdonk and Bosvelt ( ) and bought Lazovic, Kuyt and Jean, PSV is probably getting another Korean player, got De Jong and Colin, NAC got Seedorf (Stefano) and sold Van der Eede, Heerenveen got Knopper, and I could go on with transfers happening in the Netherlands!

So, what's it like in your country? Is it just the Netherlands, or is the transfermarket "back" in all Europe?

The hugh amount of big money moves that happens every summer in Italy and Spain has mainly stopped, but there will always be a few big transfers (with Beckham moving for 20ish million, and Ronaldinho and Duff for around 17 million pounds).

But most of the Italian clubs have no money, ditto most of the clubs in Spain, Germany and France.
In fact, out of the Big 5 (England, Spain, Italy, France and Germany), the league with the most clubs in the black in the English Premiership.

"Reportedly" the only clubs in Spain and Germany with-out debt are Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.
Valencia, Deportivo, Betis, Espanyol and another 10 un-named Spanish Premier League have masses of debt.
In 2001, Las Palmas had around 40million pounds worth of debt - TWICE their annual turnover. Las Palmas isn't the worst off.
The ONLY Italian 'Serie A' club in the 2001/2002 season that made a profit was little Chievo. Juve, Lazio, Roma, Fiorentina (R.I.P) and the Milan clubs had massive losses (with Juve spending 117% of their budget on wages), but the club who got the least TV money was the only one to make a profit.
Now that's irony.

But things in Italy seem to be on the up, with Fiorentina's demise opening people's eyes.

The Dutch league may be making alot of transfers, but they are between themselves, so the money stays in Holland, and the fees are nothing compared with 12 months ago.
The Dutch leagues 2nd highest scorer last season (Van Hooijdonk) went to Fenerbache for around a million pounds, and the price-tag around Kezman's neck is about 3.5 million quid.
Nuff said.

Real Madrid debtfree? I'm not gonna believe that! Either my memory is getting worse or I heard about a year ago that their debt was 150 million euro!

Ok, maybe the fees are not high, but isn't it a sign the market is recovering? You couldn't expect the hype to continue, maybe these prices are more realistic!

The money doesn't all stay in the Netherlands, Chivu, Van der Meyde, Kalou, Emerton, Bosvelt and Van Hooijdonck (the most important transfers) were sold to foreign teams, and Sonck, Escude, Grygera, Jean and Lazovic (most important buys) come from foreign teams. So your theory about that is not right. And if it was right it would certainly raise the question whether this is a Dutch thing or also visible in other countries.

I'm baffled by Man City's transfer purchases this summer:
David Seaman, Michael Tarnat and Paul Bosvelt
All excellent players at their best, but all are now in their mid to late 30s and well past their best.

Who did Bonaventure Kalou go to, Adnil?

The arrival of Abramovich at Chelsea has sent transfer prices rocketing in England. If this rich Venezuelan guy (the second richest man in South America) buys a club (he's been linked with Villa, Fulham and Spurs), then they could get even sillier.

Paul Bosvelt is no way past his best. I don't know the 'culture' of Manchester City, but if they play 'fightsoccer' Bosvelt could turn out to be a really good buy for you!

Bonaventure Kalou went to...Auxerre, I think

Auxerre? I'm surprised! I thought he would have gone to someone a bit bigger.

Here in belgium, the transfer market is also calmer, but there's one remarkable trend that was explained in our newspaper today:

-while other years the top teams bought a lot of players from the smaller teams, they haven't done that this year...

one reason could be the lack of money, but the writer of the article gives another explanation:
he says that the top teams don't do it, because they want less teams in first division, so they don't "finance" smaller teams by buying players...
This way, they want to achieve a natural reduction of the number of teams...

While it's logic the european transfer market is calmer than other years, i do find this a remarkable fact
