USA's wealthiest 400 - 2014

The 2014 FORBES 400: Meet America's Wealthiest

It was another record year for American wealth: The aggregate net worth of the richest 400 Americans was $2.29 trillion, up $270 billion from a year ago. It took a minimum net worth of $1.55 billion to make the FORBES 400, $250 million more than in 2013.

Re: USA's wealthiest 400 - 2014

It's really good news to hear America's richest billionaires are getting richer a such a rapid rate.

Regrettable that everyone else's income isn't experiencing the same rise in incomes. But hey, who cares about everyone else? It's the rich that matter, right?

So many Walmart billionaires on the list, is it really that big in the US? Because Walmart is nowhere to be seen in Europe

Obviously once one has a certain level of capital it's often "easier" to generate more and more.

Indeed. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Re: USA's wealthiest 400 - 2014

Jessica Pegula's dad at 108th at $4.6 billion

And the business school for the University I went to is named after Stephen Ross, #83 on the list at $6 billion. He just donated $200 million to the University of Michigan yet we still have/had outrageously high tuition bills

And yet he the rich complain they are paying too much taxes, that their wealth is being taken away from them and given to the poor.

If you hope alumini donation to go toward tuition reduction, you mistaken.
I believe unless the donor explicitly designates the fund to be spent on scholarship, the money usually goes toward research, naming a building after the guy, create a department dedicated to advancing specific ideas dear to the donor, or they go to the general endowment fund for the university.

Harvard University would eased its tuition a long time ago if money collected from donors were used to such purpose.

Once you reached a certain threshold, your main concerns become wealth preservation or growing what you already have.
You live off the interest and returns from your investment w/o even touching the principal.

Yes, I know that. And actually, he really only donated that money to the business school (which is already named after him) and the athletic department. Didn't donate it to the school in general (college of LSA or any sort of research program ).

I was just basically saying how ironic it is, especially since tuition costs seem to go up pretty significantly year after year.

I don't understand why alumni insist on donating to athletic department.
I mean, big time sport schools already pull in lot of money from TV contracts thru their football and basketball programs, do they really money from alumni?

Yes, I understand, Universities would like the public to believe that they go out of their way to keep heir tuition low to make the school accessible to all socio-economic classes, but it is not really so.
Large endowment is source of pride and touted as a sign of health, financial and intellectual.
