It's not pretty but was efficient; and it's a win!

the first set was more disturbing in some ways....she did not really have an opponent....started with all those double faults.....it was handed to her......second set....she started off with a big win..1-0 after serving, but she had an opponent...who was not handing her free games when she served....Maria did not buckle under the pressure to keep serving well.....it worked.......

Re: Indian Wells 2014 - Once - Twice - Three Times the Champion?

Maria's groundstrokes and movement were stellar in that first set, which helped her overcome the serving yips. Then in the second set, her serving was better, but her timing off the ground started to falter and the winners dropped off.

So, overall, an up and down rusty performance. It was nice to see her get the break when it mattered most to close out the match, though, because she was doing nothing against Julia's serve in the second before then. That's the kind of thing she'll need to do more of when she gets more match play under her belt. Elevate her game in the 2nd or 3rd sets when the pressure is on.

You're absolutely right that Maria needed that 2nd set;, otherwise, it would be no different than another practice session.

Maria served much better in the 2nd set; she had less DF's and got the speed up to 107 mph.

Cirstea would be a much easier R3 opponent than Giorgi. I'm worried about Giorgi; she's so quick and hits the ball so hard.

Well, not bad. It could be worse. Glad she showed us she can serve better in the 2nd.
And the last game's holding Ok, one match a time.

P.S. The things are much easier when you have lower expectations.

It's Giorgi for R3; I can't think of a tougher opponent in the draw.

I didn't watch the match, but was it better from what we have seen this year from her.And I watched quick highlights,is it just me or is she hitting the ball a bit harder?

Good enough.

She does need to work on her second set letdowns. It's sure to come back to her with more matchplay though.

Re: Indian Wells 2014 - Once - Twice - Three Times the Champion?

Can't complain.

She did what she had to do.

Not stellar, but better than what I initially anticipated.

Really did like there first set except for some woes. Second things got tighter with the opponent picking it up.

Good enough, hopefully she'll improve as she gets more rhythm and match play.

Should be an interesting one VS Giorgi.
