Maybe, just maybe, they took the photos after they had called for help and were then WAITING.

You are not supid and silly, that is waht a sensible person would do.
What you don't know is that they may have already called and were just waiting when the pciture was taken.
I assumed they pressed a panick button, and di not not atctully talked to a live person.

In such case, you still have doubt that any one heard your SOS and you still desperately try to get out on your own.
That is human reaction.
Unless they have made contact with someone outside, I have never heard of people stuck in an elavator patiently waiting for someone to show up.

I've been to Canada and have friends from there but like Vanessa Redgrave once said "I don't know of a single government that actually abides by international human rights law, not one, including my own. They violate these laws in the most despicable and obscene way."

Frankly while I despise the anti-LGBT laws in Russia its not like those throwing the first stones are snow white themselves on human rights.
Totally. But on top of being grossly homophobic, Russia is also incredibly racist, whereas Canada is just sort of racist. So, if we're competing to be the grossest, while we're all eligible to complete, Russia still wins in a landslide.

Could be, but could also be totally legit. I find it very easy to believe that the same person could be trapped in their bathroom and later trapped in an elevator. I got trapped in my Moscow apartment more than once due to a broken locking mechanism, and so did a friend of mine. Thankfully, I did not get stuck in an elevator, but I did once see a piece of a building fall off when I was walking home. I lived in a nice neighbourhood. True story.

Re: Bad/Hilarious conditions at the Sochi Olympics.

Present Olympics are always going to be a disaster, terrible organization, horror stories etc. Then it's all forgotten when the next games roll in.

Atlanta 1996: huge complaints about organization, scheduling, TV directing was a mess etc. Foreign visitors complained about obscene over-commercialization. It was a tradition that in closing speech the head of the Olympic Committee would congratulate the hosts from holding "the best Olympics ever" but this tradition was broken in Atlanta. And then there was the terrorist bombing.

SLC 2002: this was right after 9/11, security was just insane and there were lots of complaints about that.

Athens 2004: Oh boy. These games were a disaster in the making if you listened the press, Greek were nowhere close of getting the venues up in time, organization was mess, traffic was absolute horror etc.

Beijing 2008: Most people probably still remember this controversy. Lots of talk about human rights violations when building the games, PRC extragavance, poor air quality etc. Sailing venue was invaded by toxic algae which was so thick that the boats got stuck.

Vancouver 2010: first day, an athlete dies because of dangerous conditions...

Yet for the most part, all of these 'disasters' went on without a hitch. Funny how that goes.

^Don't forget how the Atlanta 1996 coca cola scandal about bribing the IOC. Of course it was just a rumor and we don't know if it was true or not, but still they took the centennial from Athens

Do the Greeks really think that the cost of hosting the Olympics ended up being a good idea

No but at the time it seemed good even though even then some people disagreed with it
But it was good in a way that it helped the infrastructure (metro, new airport, etc.), showed the world how Greece has modernized, showed the world Greek culture/history (although most people know ancient Greece anyways)
It was also good because a lot of new stadiums were built and it helped some sports develop that weren't so popular before like rowing, women's water polo, etc.
Greece was never that good at rowing and won a bronze in 2004. Since then we have medaled in Beijing and London and also have more European championships golds than any other nation.
Women's water polo was never big in Greece until the girls won the silver in Athens. Since then, they have become a world power and won the World Championship gold as well as other medals in other completions and also recently golds in World and European junior and youth events the last two years gives them a good chance to win gold in Rio.
Women's basketball was never big but they reached QF in Athens and since then have done pretty well in other competitions.

Other than that, stadiums like softball, field hockey, and beach volleyball have hardly been used. Cycling, equestrian, etc. do get used but it probably isn't worth it since they're not popular anyways in Greece and so much money was lost. And too many indoor stadiums were created and now some of them hardly get used since there were already many indoor stadiums in Athens before 2004, but they thought everything should be brand new and let's spend money to make beautiful venues instead of using old ones

It cost a lot but many of us have good memories from 2004-05. I didn't get the chance to attend the games but between Olympics 2004, Eurocup champions 2004, Eurobasket champions 2005, and Eurovision 2005, those were the "Golden Ages of Modern Greece"

EDIT-I know this is off-topic since its about Sochi, but besides a few cases like rowing, judo, and some women's sports, most sports either stayed the same or declined in Greece after the games. A lot has to do with the Eurocup title because after that football became even bigger than it already was

Well, shortly after the games, there were question wthether the cost of the Olympics caused or exacerbated the fiancial and economic crisis of Greece

Quote:
How the 2004 Olympics Triggered Greece's Decline

....
As they watch the London Olympics, many Greeks may wonder how their country went from the international glory of the Athens Games in 2004 to the recriminations of today’s crisis. Hosting the event cost almost €9 billion ($11 billion at today’s exchange rate), making the 2004 Games the most expensive ever at that point. Greek taxpayers were on the hook for €7 billion, which did not include the cost of extra projects such as a new airport and metro system.
Within days of the closing ceremony, Greece warned the euro area that its public debt and deficit figures would be worse than expected. The 2004 deficit came in at 6.1 percent of gross domestic product, more than double the euro-zone limit, while debt reached 110.6 percent of gross domestic product, the highest in the European Union. (Today, Greece’s debt is 165.3 percent of GDP.) Greece became the first EU country to be placed under fiscal monitoring by the European Commission, in 2005
...

I think any country that organized the Olympic now should be preprared to spend lot of money.
This will authotically knock out of contention countries with modest or fragile or relatively small economic; especailly, if countries are locked in a logic of outdoing each other in showcasing their countries to the world.

Only big econnomies and countries confident enough to have no need to showcase themselves by spend exhorbitent amount of money.

Demonstrators erected a large banner at Moscow State Agroengineering University reading, “Turn the referee into soap!”, in reference to Brad Meier, the American referee.
