Grande grounded in Quebec
Quebec, Canada – Ninth seed Rita Grande suffered a 6-3, 6-4 straight sets loss to Lubomira Kurhajcova in the second round of the Bell Challenge on Wednesday.
The 20 year-old Slovak avenged a heavy 6-2, 6-0 quarterfinal loss to the Italian in Casablanca earlier this year. That result back in June catapulted Grande to a third career WTA Tour singles title.
The day was made all the more worse for Italians when Antonella Serra Zanetti fell to a 6-3, 6-2 defeat to Jie Zheng of China. Fourth seed Laura Granville of the United States advanced into the quarterfinals with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over Argentine qualifier Gisela Dulko.
In first round matches, Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden prevailed in a battle of the qualifiers, at the expense of American Mashona Washington 6-7 (2), 6-2, 7-5; Sixth seed Marion Bartoli defeated wildcard entrant Marie-Eve Pelletier 6-4, 6-2.
