Re: 2014 Baseball Thread: HOF Announcement 1/8

Greg Maddux (97.2% of vote), Tom Glavine (91.9) and Frank Thomas (83.7) = IN

Craig Biggio gets 74.8% of the vote...you need 75% to get in

Re: 2014 Baseball Thread: 1/8: Maddux, Glavine, Thomas Elected to HOF

As for the Dopinggangers

Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds, arguably the greatest pitcher and hitter in baseball history but both linked to performance-enhancing drugs, each lost ground and are still a long way from gaining induction. Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young winner, got 35.4 percent while Bonds, a seven-time MVP, received 34.7 percent.

As for players connected to PEDs, Mark McGwire dropped to 11.0 percent and Sammy Sosa fell to 7.2 percent. They will remain on the ballot.

The same can’t be said for Rafael Palmeiro, who garnered just 4.4 percent and will no longer be eligible by the BBWAA. Palmeiro was one of just four players with 500 home runs and 3,000 hits but also failed a test for performance-enhancing drugs late in 2005, his final season.

If I had a vote, the three that made it, and only those three, would've been on my ballot.

Looking over the stats a final time this morning, those were the 3 I came up with.

Maddux. That name is familiar. Seems like he played for somebody before he started winning all those games for the Braves, but I'll be danged if I can remember who.

He won the NL Cy Young Award his last year with err (the team that hasn't won a World Series since 1908) the year B4 he went to Atlanta.

And FWIW, the Rocket won the AL's CYA in both of his seasons in Toronto, between his longer stints with the Red Sox and the Yankees.

Bringing up the 1908 thing is about as welcome as bringing up a certain alleged slam final result.

I can blame one of them on a bandaged thigh. There's no excuse for evidence of the alleged one.

Re: 2014 Baseball Thread: 1/8: Maddux, Glavine, Thomas Elected to HOF

Poor Mike Piazza (the best hitting catcher of all time by stats, though HOFer Johnny Bench was a better hitter in the clutch, and far better defensively) missed again. A decent case can also be made for Curt Schilling (who starred for the D'backs and Bosox after escaping from Philly) and for the Astros' Jeff Bagwell.

BTW, Greg Maddux not only won the NL CYA in Chitown his final year there, but also the next 2 years in Atlanta. (Ted Turner also largely prevented the Expos from becoming competitive, by signing their top players as free agents, in a sport without NFL/NBA style measures to make spending on players more level).

There was an insider on MLB radio that said there are suspicions from players that both Piazza and Biggio juiced.

Re: 2014 Baseball Thread: 1/8: Maddux, Glavine, Thomas Elected to HOF

News media here in the Twin Cites moped about the fact that Jack Morris missed out.

I thought Lee Smith should have been elected since he made more career saves than did Rich Gossage who is in the HOF.
