GO SERENA! I'm so hoping she can keep it going especially if she wins on clay where they say she'll probably lose. Prove them wrong Serena!

Can Serena Williams continue her quest to go undefeated this year?
BY RICK NELSON
April 5 2003
The Post and Courier

The 2003 Family Circle Cup tennis tournament starts today on Daniel Island with a field including seven of the top 10 players in the world vying for $1.3 million in prize money.

With women's tennis infinitely more compelling than the men's game, there also will be plenty of storylines to explore over the next nine days:

Can Serena Williams continue her quest to go undefeated this year?

Is Jennifer Capriati in good enough shape to make a run at Williams and the title?

Will two players emerge from the pack -- as Iva Majoli and Patty Schnyder did last year -- and provide some new faces in the finals?

How long will Anna Kournikova stick around?

These and other questions will be answered in the coming days, but don't look for Serena, Jennifer or Rising stars face off against each other in qualifying

QUALIFYING from Page 1C

Anna just yet.

This weekend is reserved for qualifying matches, a tense two days when 32 up-and-coming players vie for eight coveted spots in the main draw.

Qualifying gives fans a chance to see the WTA Tour's rising stars face off against each other. The list includes French player Stephanie Foretz, who worked her way through the qualifying in last year's Family Circle Cup and then knocked off Conchita Martinez and Monica Seles en route to the quarterfinals. Also competing this weekend is Maria Sharapova, a 15-year-old Russian who qualified for her first Grand Slam tournament in January at the Australian Open.

This weekend's qualifying matches start at 10 a.m. on the outer courts. Daily general admission tickets are $10.

DRAW PARTY

Fans can stop outside the Family Circle Magazine Stadium at 3 p.m. today and watch WTA Tour officials conduct the official draw, which determines who plays whom in the tournament. Meghann Shaugnessey, the world's 19th-ranked player, will help with the draw. Shaugnessey was a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open in January and upset No. 2 Venus Williams in March to reach the quarters at the Nasdaq-100 tournament.

TICKETS

Next week daily tickets will range from $20-$55 for each session depending on the time and date of the matches. Day sessions generally are more expensive.

Military personnel and their families can get $10 off tickets or a 50 percent discount on night session tickets. Bring your military ID when purchasing tickets.

More ticket information is available by calling (800) 677-2293 or (843) 856-7900, or visiting the tournament web site at www.familycirclecup.com. The box office is open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday in the Family Circle Cup Tennis Center Clubhouse.

TRANSPORTATION

CARTA will be providing shuttle service to and from the Family Circle Cup from April 5 through April 13. Cost is $3 per person each way or $5 round trip. Tickets can be purchased on board or at any CARTA ticket outlet. Shuttles will run to and from the Charleston Visitor Center, Embassy Suites in North Charleston and Patriots Point.

Shuttles going to the event will pick up at the Visitors Center on the hour beginning at 8 a.m.; at Patriots Point a quarter past the hour beginning at 8:15 a.m. and at Embassy Suites every half hour beginning at 7:45 a.m. Shuttles returning from the event will leave the stadium for Patriots Point and the Visitor Center on the hour beginning at 8:30 a.m. and for Embassy Suites every half hour beginning at 8 a.m.

Serena Williams tries to keep streak going on clay

By PETE IACOBELLI, AP Sports Writer
April 6, 2003
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Here's some bad news for the WTA Tour -- Serena Williams is looking forward to playing on clay this week at the Family Circle Cup.

Williams, 17-0 this season with victories at the Australian, Gaz de France and Nasdaq-100 opens, doesn't think the different surface will slow her down.

``Actually, clay, I think, is better for your knee because the hard court actually wears your body out,'' said Williams, ranked No. 1 in the world since July 8. ``So it'll be easy. ... I'll be happy.''

Williams played for the first time here last year. She was ranked seventh in the world then and lost to Patty Schnyder in the quarterfinals.

Few could have guessed that Williams was only weeks away from starting her ``Serena Slam'' -- she holds all four Grand Slams titles -- at Roland Garros.

Her preparations for a French Open defense start on Daniel Island.

``It was just a really nice atmosphere and a nice feel, and it was kind of cool,'' Williams said. ``And I definitely look forward to going back.''

Others entered this week are Lindsay Davenport, Justine Henin-Hardenne and defending champion Iva Majoli. Jennifer Capriati, who won the 2001 title, withdrew from the tournament Sunday because of strep throat.

Williams has had an up-and-down history at this event. She was committed to play in 2000, but withdrew because South Carolina flew the Confederate flag atop its Statehouse dome. The flag has since been removed, although the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has continued its economic boycott of the state.

The civil rights group plans to protest the flag at this year's tennis tournament.

When Williams arrived to play a year ago, she was met by an enthusiastic crowd that did not seem concerned with her defiance of the NAACP's boycott.

``People were actually cheering for me to win,'' she remembered. ``And it was a lot of African-Americans who came out.''

With her perfect start, Williams has been asked whether she can go undefeated.

``You have to understand, I don't expect to reach that because I mean if I do, that would just be unbelievable,'' she said.

Martina Navratilova came the closest with an 86-1 mark in 1983.

Williams has met lofty goals before. After withdrawing from the Australian Open in 2002 with an ankle injury, Williams told herself she would win the other three Grand Slams. With all four titles in her trophy case, Williams gave herself a more daunting goal.

``I wanted to set my goals high,'' she said. ``Whatever happens, happens.''

And Daniel Island looks like a good, pressure-free place to keep the streak going. Williams says the softer clay will help her rebound from the difficult hard-court season so far. She has practiced on clay courts at her father's home.

``I'll be, you know, running and just sliding and playing lazy tennis because on the clay I just tend to lay back. I love playing on that surface,'' Williams said.

Serena defeated Dally Randrientefy 6-3, 6-0 in her second round match and will now play Conchita Martinez (gawd, no) or Tatiana Garbin. Goo Serena!

BTW, the WTA finally gave Serena some respect and presented her with an award for winning all four Grand Slam events. (bout time) Congrats Serena!
