1967 International Tournament

Ladies singles ¼ f : Carol Sherrif (A) d Mabel Vrancovic (Arg) 64 36 97; Alena Palmeova (Czech) d Carol Prosen Kalo 62 64 ½ f : Vlasta Vopickova (Czech) d C Sherriff 63 108; Gail Sherriff (A) d Palmeova 86 57 62

Final : Gail Sherriff d V Vopickova 61 16 62

Mixed doubles f : C Sherriff-Crealy d G Sherriff-Kalo 64 62

  • The line up for the 1967 event was rather below par, as players were recruited by the Brummana delegates in Britain just after the 6-day June Arab-Israeli war which left the whole Near East shocked by the devastating Tsahal victory over Egypt, Syria and Jordan.
  • The Greek player Nicolas Kalogeropoulos (or Nick Kalo) who played and lived in the US, has the profile of an antique greek god-perfect statue. You can imagine the support he got from the feminine attendance all along his conquest of the doubles title in Brummana. Kalo had won the Roland Garros AND the Wimbledon juniors in 1963.

The east wall is too near.

  • Lesley Turner, recently married to Bill Bowrey had won the French title at Roland-Garros in 1963 and 1965, and was runner-up in 1962 and 1967, making her the equal on clay of legendary Margaret Smith (Court); she also reached the Australian singles final in 1964 and 1967 + 7 grand Slam doubles titles + mixed titles…. Being the 3d Aussie star of the 60's; Those were the times when Margaret Smith was a super power in world tennis.
  • Gail Sherriff once brought down the net on the Wimbledon centre court with one of her forehands, while she was still practicing before her match. This was the only case of a Wimbledon net failure in over 100 years.

She had reached the final there in 1967, losing to King, and was also runner-up at Roland Garros in 1961 and 1966, and at Forest Hills (US title) in 1961 and 1967.

  • The international tournament was held AFTER the civil strife had started in the spring of 1975, mainly in and close around Beirut. Three "rounds"of fierce battles had already opposed the Palestinian PLO forces and their extreme leftist allies to the Christian militias. It was a pure miracle that such an event could take place at all, and in fact, the clashes resumed mid September, extending to the Bekaa valley and North Lebanon.
The Tournament was discontinued after that, from 1976 till the end of the Lebanon wars in 1990, and would never regain its glamour and tennis stars attraction. The Lebanese pound had depreciated enormously, making it impossible for Lebanon to host a major Open event with serious Prize money.

In 1993, the Sports Club of Brummana tried a revival of the tradition, extending mainly invitations to a very short list of good players, but nothing to compare with the 1955-1975 golden era !
