Re: Brumana International in Lebanon

1958

No Event was held in the summer of 1958 whilst Lebanon was in full internal political and armed turmoil, which ended with the US Marines landing on its coast in July and withdrawing at the end of the summer.

Nevertheless, following a few local tournaments played before and after the "Events" as the Lebanese called the 1958 spring and summer armed rebellion, a ranking was issued by the Lebanese Federation at the end of the year : Men's singles = 1-Samir Khoury; 2-Roy Karaoglan; 3-Nadim Hajjar; 4- Elie Attieh; 5-Karim Fawaz & Michel Rebeiz; Ladies = 1- Ms Vera Mattar; 2- A Kyriacopoulo; 3-Nena Farah; 4- Renée Abi Hatab.

Early in 1959, Samir Khoury turned officially "registered Professionnal" and was consequently banned by the Federation from all Lebanese competitions. Those were the days of "Amateurism"in Tennis !

1960 International ended on August

Ladies Singles ¼ f: Miss Armstrong d Caroline Yates-Bell (GB) ½ f: Sandra Reynolds (S Afr) d Mrs Ayala-Tort 64 62; Renée Schuurmann (S Afr) d Sheila Armstrong (GB) 64 64

  • Over 1500 spectators packed the western grandstand of Brummana for the Sunday finals, and the prizes ceremony was presided by interior minister Kamal Jumblatt. Even the Saturday Ladies final attracted 1 000 spectators for a thrilling match between the good-looking 2 South African Ladies. Jumblatt might have wanted to emulate Pierre Gemayel's presence at the finals, the year before !!!
  • Sandra Reynolds was the finalist at Wimbledon a month before gracing the Brummana courts, losing to world no 1 Maria Bueno 86 60. Reynolds was ranked 3 in the world at the end of 1960 (no 5 in 1961, no 6 or 8 in 1962 , and Renée Schuurman was no 10 in 1960, no 8 or 9 in 1961-62-63.
  • End of year, Sandra Reynolds was world ranked no 3 and Renée Schuurman no 10.

Re: Brumana International in Lebanon

1961 International Tournament - August 28.

Ladies singles : C Coronado (Sp) d Mounira Zeydane (Leb); A Stupp d Suzan Butt (Canada); P Balling d Birgit Marten (Sp); Doris Schuster d Robin Blakelock (GB) ; ½ f : Balling d Stupp; Coronado d Schuster;

Final : Carmen Coronado (Spain) d Pia Balling (Denmark) 62 61

Mixed doubles f : C Coronado-Mandarino d D Schuster-J Newcombe
  • The men's final of Brummana 1961 was delayed for two hours as both Santana and Stolle had to recover from the "tourista" they got whilst wining (arak ?) and dining at the Park hotel of Brummana.
  • One week earlier, in Istanbul, Turkey, Fred Stolle beat Manuel Santana 62 63 63 ! Then Stolle lost the ½ to Ken Fletcher who in turn lost the final to Bob Hewitt. One week after Brummana, in Athens, Greece, Stolle beat Santana again 63 46 63 62, only to lose the final to Bob Hewitt. In the Ladies singles, Robin Blakelock had won the title over Doris Schuster 57 63 61.
  • Ken Fletcher, who never fulfilled his potential in singles, despite his devastating forehand drive, will nevertheless turn out to be a great mixed doubles player, winning 10 mixed Slam titles, all with the All-time great Margaret Smith-Court, and 2 men's doubles titles. He will also beat Howe and Stolle to reach the Australian championships singles final in 1963, losing to Emerson.
  • Carmen Coronado ended up marrying Ed Mandarino. Mandarino's win over Hewitt was a major upset by all standards, and showed that the Brazilian's skills on clay were higher than elsewhere, and he will return to Brummana with increasingly good results, eventually winning the title in 1968 and losing the 1969 final to that same Hewitt !
  • Robin Blakelock was the British junior champ for both of 1959 and 1960.

  • The graceful and lovely Helga Schultze will reach her best world ranking in 1964 as world no 5.
  • In Istanbul, Singles were won by Roy Emerson over Neale Fraser 36 60 63 63 and by Miss Helga Schultze over Pia Balling 64 61, with Emerson and Fraser also securing the doubles over fellow countrymen John Fraser and Warren Jacques 61 57 61. The score of the Emerson-Fraser match was very similar to the Brummana one.
