Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 7

Except for the Lino match, (first meeting) Caro has been all about evening out H2H this year: 3-3 Goerges, 3-3 Safarova, 2-2 McHale, hopefully 1-1 Muguruza and probably 5-5 Aga.

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 7

Yeah, its a revenge theme, but working hard is one thing, playing well is another. Has to play better than this.
Muguruza has more weapons than McHale and Caro cant give a set away

Oh ye of little faith ... Yes, that's me. Still I don't regret leaving the sinking ship at 4-1 down in 2nd.

It was embarrassing and atrocious beyond belief.

And I also guess that 2nd set shows, why Caro can lose to anyone. No, really, anyone.

Yeah, she's lost the ability to be steady. But if Muguruza beats her in AO & Miami, that's a very bad sign. Those are 2 of the biggest tournaments on Caro's best surface, and she cant beat Muguruza on them?
This is a big match. You have to get to the contenders at majors. This will be another Giorgi, Begu type loss at a hardcourt major

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 7

Does anyone know when WTA updated Caro's weight in her profile? For years she was listed at 58 kgs, now 63 kgs. I haven't really checked her data lately so it may have happened months ago for all I know.

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 7

Well done (sort of!)

While Caro has lost in both R1 & R2 at all other grand slams, she has never lost before R3 at Australian Open!

AO is also her best GS in terms of W/L (exactly the same W/L as USO (22/7) if she loses R3).

It's pretty weird how Caro reached 18 consecutive GS 3rd rounds since her AO debut aged 17! And then, after that fine streak, she only managed to reach two 3rd rounds in her next 6 grand slams - after having been WTA year-end no. 1 two years in a row!

I didn't watch the McHale match. But I noticed that Caro went from 6/3 (W/UE) in set 1 to 2/14 in set 2! Seems pretty awful by the numbers.

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 7

I think Caroline was fortunate. They closed the roof, McHale didnt play well in 2 sets. She had a good round 1 draw.
So this round 3 match is big. Weather should be cooler on Saturday. Its really about her fight and playing big points well.
A lot of good players were tested, like Sharapova, Li in a tiebreak with a 16 year old, Stephens down 35 in the 3rd.
You have to play the big points well to get to week 2, and Caro only won a 3rd round once in the last 8 majors. That was against a qualifier. Has to get to week 2 at majors

Set 2 was one of the worst sets I've seen Caro play tbh. The last game in the set was laughably bad. I think it was double fault, and maybe 3 backhand unforced errors (maybe one was forehand), of which 2 were really bad.

It all turned at 1-0* (15-40) McHale in the final set. It was a strange, strange match in general. Caro was good set 1. Set 2 really bad. Set 3 McHale was poor after not breaking for 2-0.

The Muguruza match will be tough. Probably 50:50 or close to it I would guess. Muguruza is going to tire sooner or later (she won coming through qualifying last week), whether it will be vs Caro is anyone's guess. But she's likely to have bags of confidence, something it was clear McHale didn't have today, and she has very clear weapons to hurt Caro with.

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 7

Caro is one of the fittest players so I think if anything the roof benefited McHale, her serve was pretty good in the 2nd set. The lucky part was not being scheduled first on court. McHale didn't play great but neither did Caro, she had a meltdown that lasted around 40 minutes. She came up with some good serves and turned things around when it was looking bad. Similar to her last match at the USO, difference being this time she did wake up when things weren't working. Plus, Christina doesn't have the firepower Giorgi has.

Anyway, I take the positives from the match, beating a player who had a 2-1 H2H and overcoming the mid match brainfart. That said, she's not going any further if she keeps insisting on playing so up and down sets. Muguruza is on a roll, high on confidence so Caro needs to assert herself early or she's toast.

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 7

I think the roof helped Caro. Her forehand went haywire at the start of set 2, like it did against Giorgi late in set 2.
If your game is falling apart and you have to deal with crazy heat, you have big problems.

Caro was able to pull things together, and its good she started well both matches in Melbourne.
But you cant have your forehand break down during a major.
But a lot of positives: started well, pulled it together when the situation was pressure filled.
Just has to keep her forehands on court all match, and she missed an easy backhand near the net (I think) game 2 in set 2. Got to put away the easy stuff

Re: Danish Delight - Caroline Wozniacki thread - vol 7

Thomas Högstedt on Caro-McHale http://ekstrabladet.dk/sport/anden_s...cle2195564.ece :

The first set was really good. That's the way I've been working on getting her to play. I don't think McHale played badly. Caro just played really, really well.

Then she lost a bit in the second set, but that doesn't matter. The important thing is that she saw she could win with that game.

She showed that she's developed her game - both the forehand and backhand, and she moved up the court. It was very impressive.

Caroline got careful in the second set. McHale played better and Caro was too much at the back of the court.

I think that might have been unnecessary. She could have moved more up court in the second too. It could have ended 6-0 6-1, she played that well in the first. But it's easy to say afterwards.

1-6 in set 2 vs McHale Well, at least Caro won the match !

Big match in AO R3 vs Muguruza. This will show us where Caro really is. Beat her

Yeah, huge match. hardcourt major, and this is where Caro has to be able to win week 1 matches.
I think very important to play well, all match, if she's capable

I dunno. I guess it depends on what you think of Muguruza as a prospect. In a year or so, she may be a top 10/top 15 ranked player.

Caro won only 2 games against #62 Kvitova at the 2010 Wimbledon. In 2011, Kvitova won Wimbledon.

I'm not saying that Muguruza is neccessarily gonna win a slam some day, just that a bad loss (rankings-wise at least) can look a lot better in the not too distant future.
