ANNOUNCE: Andrew's Iroda Tulyaganova Biography updated

I have just updated Iroda's biography on my website:
http://geocities.com/andrewbroad/tennis/tulya/biography.html

It is not a copy of Iroda's standard WTA Tour biography, but my own detailed appreciation of her game, followed by a review for every year of her career. I have edited the introduction, and added a review of 2006.

I wish Iroda and all her fans a happy new year.

Re: Iroda Tulyaganova cheering thread!!

Scheduled to play her AO 1R Monday, court 13.

Start Time 11:00 AM (midnight GMT)

Men's Singles - 1st Rnd.
Marc Gicquel (FRA) vs. Alun Jones (AUS)

followed by
Women's Singles - 1st Rnd.
Elena Vesnina (RUS) vs. Anabel Medina Garrigues (ESP)[25]

Men's Singles - 1st Rnd.
Radek Stepanek (CZE)[20] vs. Michael Llodra (FRA)

Women's Singles - 1st Rnd.
Iroda Tulyaganova (WC/UZB/131) vs. Monique Adamczak (WC/AUS/246)
H2H: Never played. WTA profiles: http://tinyurl.com/yxeuof

If the first 3 matches are of average duration, Iroda’s match should start around 5pm – 6.30pm Melbourne time (6am – 7.30am GMT). AFAIK court 13 is not televised - unless someone knows different?

Iroda is not entered in the women’s dubs. Kuznetsova, Iroda's likely 2R singles opponent, has entered the dubs with Hingis. Kuzzie has withdrawn from recent tournies with "bronchitis / respiratory virus". So how fit is Kuzzie? Well she's confident enough to enter the doubles, and with the responsibility of partnering Hingis, who can pick and choose her partners – if that's any indication. Any less convincing than 6-0 6-0, against 1R opponent Jessica Moore (ranked 992), has to be a sign the Kuzmeister is not 100%.

GO RODI GO!!!

Iroda look's GREAT! I feel bad for saying this being an Australian and all, but hopefully Iroda kicks Monique's arse! And takes it to Kuznetsova in the second round! GO IRODA!

The evening-sessions of the Australian Open will be televised on BBCi from 08:30 GMT each day of the tournament (digital viewers press Red or select the appropriate Freeview-channel - 301 or 302, I don't know which yet).

My understanding is that this coverage will consist of the women's match on the evening-session of the Rod Laver Arena (today Serena Williams v Mara Santangelo), followed by the men's match, followed by recorded coverage of any Andy Murray match that will have taken place during the day-session (his matches will also be broadcast live on BBCi during the British night, and possibly on BBC 1 or BBC 2 if he reaches the third round - I mention this just in case they happen to slip any women's tennis into such coverage; in 2002, they showed five minutes of Daniela Hantuchová against Venus Williams).

Last year, the women's semi-finals took place during the day-session, and recorded coverage was shown on BBCi following live coverage of the evening-session that day.

The women's and men's singles-finals will be broadcast live on BBC 1 and BBC 2, respectively.

8. Iroda Tulyaganova preview
----------------------------

Iroda will be playing her first Grand Slam since Wimbledon 2003 due to an elbow-injury that ruined the next three years for her. A former world #16, Iroda is making her way back up the rankings - currently #131. She won the Asian Championships last September to earn her wild card here.

Iroda is one of the most exciting, powerful, versatile and athletic players I have ever seen, and with the draw she's got, fourth round looks very possible, and I don't think a quarter-final is out of the question!

8.1 First round
---------------

The only previous time I've heard of Monique Adamczak was when Jelena Dokic beat her in the final of an Australian Open wild-card play-off (only open to Australian players) in December 2005.

This time, Adamczak does have a wild card for the Australian Open, having improved her ranking to #241. Outside of Australia, she plays only on the ITF circuit. Her most notable victims last year were #96 Melinda Czink and #120 Milagros Sequera.

Not surprisingly, Iroda has never played her, and always provided that Iroda is healthy, I don't expect her to have any problems here.

8.2 Second round
----------------

Svetlana Kuznetsova [3] retired with breathing-difficulties at Sydney - having pulled out of the Silver Group final at Hong Kong with bronchitis - and Iroda beat her 6-4 6-1 in their only meeting: second round of the Australian Open 2002!

In terms of Iroda's chances of creating an upset, I'm very pleased with this draw - although not in terms of it attracting BBCi-televisation, as I believe Amélie Mauresmo (and possibly others) would be ahead of Kuznetsova in the pecking-order for that coveted evening-slot.

8.2 Third round
---------------

Should Iroda make it this far, the seedings project a mouthwatering match with Maria Kirilenko [26], who is ultracute and extremely pretty, but not that strong of a player - especially as she's in a pretty bad slump at the moment, losing in the first round of most of her tournaments since losing her Beijing-title.

Iroda has never played Kirilenko, but despite the gulf in rankings, I can see Little Maria really struggling to cope with Iroda's power and athleticism.

Will Little Maria even make it to the third round? She starts with the most attractive match of the first round, against #89 Karolina Šprem - another regular member of the Monday-Club, but Karolina can be very dangerous when she finds her form, as Venus Williams would tell you!

And we shouldn't overlook #43-ranked veteran Elena Likhovtseva, still a very solid player at 31. I thought she was planning to retire at the end of 2006, so she must be feeling pretty good about tennis to have continued into 2007.

8.3 Fourth round
----------------

Iroda has never been beyond the third round of any Grand Slam, but with the doubt over Kuznetsova's health, and the weakness of that section of the draw, this seems as good a chance as any to better that record!

Iroda's likely fourth-round opponent would be Shahar Peer [16], a rising star who is looking to beat the best in 2007, and upset Patty Schnyder at Sydney before losing 6-2 6-1 to Kim Clijsters. Shahar would be a very tough opponent for Iroda, as she has added power to the retrieval-skills that are the basis of her game.

I would prefer Tatiana Golovin [20] to reach this berth. Tatiana has a big serve, and /can/ hit hard from the baseline - but she's too passive too often for my liking; otherwise I might induct her into my Eternal Fanship! I've had a soft spot for Tatiana for three years now, but my Eternal Fanship requires Reason as well as Passion.

Tatiana is a very feisty and determined competitor, but also a bit of a choker: she had Amélie Mauresmo on the ropes in the second round of Sydney, but couldn't capitalise on a 6-4 *3-2 lead. She is prone to spraining her ankles, but now wears ankle-supports, and looks set to continue her improvement in 2007.

8.4 Quarter-final
-----------------

Iroda is in the quarter of the draw that looks the most open to me, with Nadia Petrova [5] being injured, but my objective prediction to reach the semi-finals from this quarter is Jelena Jankovic [11].

Jankovic is on great form at the moment, and it would be too much to expect Iroda to stop her. Jankovic won Auckland and almost beat Clijsters in the Sydney final (served for the match in the second set and had match-points) - but 'almost' is the operative word. Jankovic also choked dramatically when leading Justine Henin-Hardenne 6-4 *4-2 (40/30) in the semi-finals of the US Open, then lost every game in the rest of the match. Fatigue may also be a factor after playing two full weeks before the Australian Open.

This is as far ahead as I want to look for Iroda at this stage, though I can always dream of a mouthwatering semi-final with Nicole Vaidišová!

----------------------------
12. Order of Play for Monday
----------------------------

Court 13 (start 11:00 AEST = 00:00 GMT)
MS 1r: Marc Gicquel v Alun Jones [WC]
WS 1r: Elena Vesnina v ANABEL MEDINA GARRIGUES [25]
MS 1r: RADEK STEPÁNEK [20] v Michael Llodra
WS 1r: Iroda Tulyaganova [WC,EF] v Monique Adamczak [WC]

4. Tulyaganova v Adamczak report
--------------------------------

- Iroda Tulyaganova [WC,EF] lt. Monique Adamczak [WC], 1-6 4-6

A very, very disappointing result for Iroda, by the standards she has shown since September!

Perhaps it was the extreme Australian heat (she's said before that she doesn't like playing in hot climates), perhaps it was the partisan Australian crowd, perhaps it was the unexpected switch from Court 13 to Court 2 (which made me miss the first set in following live scores), or perhaps she's injured yet again.

First set
---------
TULYAGAN *______ 1
ADAMCZAK _*@*@*@ 6

Second set
----------
TULYAGAN _*___* *@_ 4
ADAMCZAK * *@* *__@ 6

As I started following live scores at 19:30 AEST, Iroda was already a set down and facing points to go a break down:

Iroda serving 0-1: 15/40 (2 BPs) -> 40/40, ad I, held.
Adamczak serving 1-1: held to love.
Iroda serving 1-2: 0/30 -> 30/30, 30/40 (BP), broken.
Adamczak serving 3-1: 40/0, 40/15, held.
Iroda serving 1-4: 0/15, 30/15, 30/40 (BP), 40/40, ad I, held.
Adamczak serving 4-2: 15/0, scoreboard froze... 30/40 (BP), 40/40, ad I, Deuce #2, ad A (BP #2), Deuce #3, scoreboard froze...

Adamczak serving 5-3: 30/0, 30/15, 40/15 (2 MPs) -> 40/40, ad I (BP), broken!

Well, I've witnessed it many times in the last 15 years that I've been following professional tennis: Player A serves for the match, gets tight, and Player B goes on to win! Could it happen here?

Iroda serving 4-5: 0/15, 15/15, 15/30, 40/30, 40/40, ad A (MP #3), Adamczak won 6-1 6-4 at 20:08 (possibly about five minutes earlier, because the scoreboard froze at match-point, then actually went backwards!).

From Sunny_Boy's report:
>>>
Finally after all the waiting play began at around 6.45 local time. Iroda held quite easy! From there on, she was almost missing every shot. Whenever a rally was being played, Monique would just get the ball in and Iroda would miss. Monique did her homework and attacked Iri's backhand, I don't think Iroda knew how Monique played, she didn't do her homework I think.

The whole crowd was cheering for Monique except Akgul, Iroda's players box, Dom and myself. Everyone Dom did a great job cheering, it was basically 200 Aussies against Dom and myself, so Dom deserves a lot of respect from us Iri fans.

In the 2nd Iroda basically started off the same, way too many errors, Monqiue didn't do much to be winning a set and 4-2. At 4-2 it was a crucial game, a long deuce game which Iroda lost, to go down 2-5. At 2-5 down and serving, she clawed her way back from 0-30 to win the game. When Monique came to serve for the match she was feeling the pressure, she held 2 mps but Iroda saved them both, one with a winner! When she won the game and went down 4-5 she was pumped. At 4-5 down, she couldn't land a 1st serve! A DF didn't help either. However she had GP but a tight call went against Iroda and threw her momentum, Iroda wasn't convinced with the call. The rest now is history, Iroda lost with more errors.

When Monique won, she collapsed to the court (I thought it was an over reaction but anyway) Iroda was nice to her at the net and gave her a kiss. Iroda did wave to the crowd as she left

Q. You looked to dominate pretty much all the match; perhaps tightened up in the last few games. Was it just she started to get into it?

MONIQUE ADAMCZAK: Yeah, I guess she tried to change her game up a few times in the match. I did well to keep that under control.

But I guess I got ahead of myself a little bit towards the end of the second set. To her credit, she also kept fighting. Yeah, but I stayed tough. <smiling>

Q. What were your strengths today?

MONIQUE ADAMCZAK: What I've been working on the last few weeks with my coach here, Peter McGraw, is just staying mentally tough, staying calm out there. We've been working on a few technical things, of course, which I've improved a lot.

Yeah, it's mainly mental. I've always had - I think I've always had a good game. Just getting it together mentally and really believing that I can win those matches and I belong at this level, so...

Q. How do you gain mental strength?

MONIQUE ADAMCZAK: It's practice, day in, day out. On the practice-court, a hundred percent. Off the practice-court, in the gym. It's pushing yourself. Yeah, it's having a sense of confidence, a sense of belief.

Q. You look like you can't wipe the smile off your face. What's the feeling inside?

MONIQUE ADAMCZAK: I'm pretty calm actually. I'm very excited. I'm actually a lot calmer. I thought I'd be like crazy. No, I'm pretty relaxed. <smiling>

You know, I'm sure, like a lot of other young tennis-players out there, I've dreamt this moment for a long time, you know, playing in my home-country, doing well, winning matches.

I've, yeah, dreamt it a lot. So for it to happen, it's very fulfilling.

Q. You fulfilled that one. Where is the next one?

MONIQUE ADAMCZAK: What's the next goal? Well, it's wherever that may be. You know, uhm, I came into this tournament - honestly, I came into this tournament really wanting to make third round, fourth round. That was my goal.

I believe I can achieve that, I really do. You don't think about it when you're out there. But when you go out into the gym, you're working your ass off, that's what you're thinking about. That's what I'm thinking about, so...

Q. So this win today is not your final?

MONIQUE ADAMCZAK: No, no.

Q. Has there been any injury-problems the last few years, or has it just been playing ITFs?

MONIQUE ADAMCZAK: I've had a lot of injuries actually. It's just been overwork, overtraining, a bit unlucky. I'm a hard worker. The tendency was always to push myself too hard. I think I've learnt to control that a bit, step back, just manage my body better.

But, yeah, I've had a few injuries. I've done well, then I'd be out with an injury for a couple months, and that would set me back.

I think it's made me a lot tougher. It's made me who I am today. May have set me back a bit, but I think I wouldn't be here today if it hadn't been for that.

9. Iroda's next tournaments
---------------------------

At last Iroda has moved off the ITF Women's Circuit, and is planning to qualify for some WTA tournaments!

* Pattaya City (week of 5th February - qualifying)
* Bangalore (week of 12th February - qualifying)
* Dubai (week of 19th February - next-in list for qualifying)
* Doha (week of 26th February - qualifying)
* Indian Wells (fortnight of 5th March - next-in list for qualifying)

However, the Pattaya City qualifying-draw is now out, and Iroda's name isn't in it.

Asian Games 2006: More on Iroda's loss to Li

================
15th ASIAN GAMES (Doha, Qatar)
================ http://www.doha-2006.com/
Women's Singles: Quarter-final (Monday 11th December 2006)
------------------------------

- IRODA TULYAGANOVA [8] lt. LI,NA [1], 6-3 5-7 2-6

I just found the following in an email from the now-sadly-defunct tennis_queen_sania Yahoo! Group:
>>>
CHINESE top seed Li Na downed the Asian Games defending champion to setup a semifinal showdown against Indian darling Sania Mirza who easily won her match yesterday.

The Chinese world number 21, the highest ranked player here, fought back from a set down against Uzbekistan's Iroda Tulyaganova to sneak through in the second and power her way to victory in the third, winning 3-6 7-5 6-2.

Li, who lost in the team event to 2002 champion Tulyaganova, said the Uzbek's lack of concentration and her own determination had given her the edge.

"I played okay. I was a bit tired after playing too much tennis on Sunday," said the 24-year-old.

"Iroda was using top spin a lot, and she was serving well. So after losing the first set, I told myself I can do it, and I hung on.

"She came back into the match three times in the second set. But she was losing concentration quite often."
<<<

There's no sign of Iroda in any draws since the Australian Open. The next possibility is:
* Indian Wells (fortnight of 5th March - next-in list for qualifying)

Indian Wells: Andrew's tournament-review

=================
PACIFIC LIFE OPEN (Indian Wells, California, USA; outdoor hard (Plexipave); WTA Tier I)
================= http://www.pacificlifeopen.com/

Iroda Tulyaganova [EF] in qualifying:
1q + JULIA SCHRUFF [3], 6-3 6-4
2q - YVONNE MEUSBURGER [24], 5-7 6-7 (7/9)

Iroda's terrible loss in the first round of the Australian Open, and her subsequent inactivity, had put serious doubts in my mind over all that she had achieved in the last four months of 2006.

So I was very pleased to see her in the qualifying-draw here, and delighted when she won her first match!

But the loss shows that Iroda has lost a lot of ground since late 2006, and dampens my hopes of seeing her play in England again - something that might just happen this June if she could get her ranking up from #136 to inside the top 100...

Unfortunately there are none of Iroda TTBOMK, but there are some of another attractive Uzbek girl who lost in the second qualifying-round:

Qualifying: First round (Monday 5th March)
-----------------------

+ Iroda Tulyaganova [EF] d. JULIA SCHRUFF [3], 6-3 6-4

Schruff reached the semi-finals of Acapulco last week, so a good scalp for Iroda!

The following information comes from the live-scores thread:
http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=288688&page=86

First set
---------
TULYAGA *@ @* * * 6
SCHRUFF __@__* *_ 3

Iroda serving 0-0: 40/0 to deuce; Iroda saved one break-point, then held.
Schruff serving 0-1: broken to love.

Iroda serving 3-1: held to 15.

Second set
----------
TULYAGA @*__@ ???* 6
SCHRUFF __*@ @???_ 4

Iroda serving 1-0: held after saving 2 BPs.

Iroda serving 3-2: broken after squandering GPs.
Schruff serving 3-3: scoreboard froze at 30/15.

------------------------
Qualifying: Second round (Tuesday 6th March)
------------------------

- Iroda Tulyaganova [EF] lt. YVONNE MEUSBURGER [24], 5-7 6-7 (7/9)

Iroda led 5-4* in the second set, and *4/1 in the tiebreak. She saved one match-point at 5/6*, and had a set-point at *7/6 before losing the last three points.

DevilishAttitude:
>>>
Meusburger is a very old fashioned counter-puncher,
<<<

rrfnpump:
>>>
players like Meusburger who hit flat and hardly make any errors are bad opponents for Iri
<<<

markdelaney:
>>>
Iroda made just 6/18 break points, compared to 7/8 of her opponent. She had 0-40 on Meusburger's serve in the 12th game of the first set. She led the second set 4-2 and had a point for 5-2 and led the tie-break 4-1, with a set point at 7-6. A case of many missed chances and a serve that is clearly not working very well at the moment.
<<<

I was hoping 'Rodi' might get into the main draw as a lucky loser, but it was Anastassia Rodionova who did so when Elena Dementieva withdrew.

Meusburger was lucky to even reach the second qualifying-round, as Margalita Chakhnashvili had served for the match in the second set.

At least Meusburger went on to reach the third round of the main draw, where Martina Hingis will take care of her...
