Iroda in China: Andrew's ITF round-up

In the last three weeks, Iroda has played three ITF tournaments in China (Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen), in each one going one better than the last.

This has boosted her ranking from #161 (23rd October) to #131 (13th November), and hopefully in 2007 she'll be a regular on the WTA Tour instead of the ITF Women's Circuit.

Before that, Iroda is due to play in the Asian Hopman Cup (23rd-26th November) and the Asian Games (1st-15th December).

The Asian Hopman Cup will be played at Hyderabad, India. The winning nation gets direct entry into the Hopman Cup proper (Perth, Australia, 30th December - 5th January).

=================== {week of 23rd October}
ITF WOMEN'S CIRCUIT (Beijing, China; outdoor hard; ITF $50k)
=================== http://www.itftennis.com/womens/
Singles
-------

Iroda Tulyaganova:
1r + CHAN,CHIN-WEI [8], 6-4 6-2
2r + Saeki,Miho, 6-4 6-7 (6/8) 6-4
qf - Marina Erakovic, 1-6 1-6

The quarter-final scoreline is shocking after Iroda reached the semi-finals of WTA Kolkata and the final of WTA Tashkent, but at least she lost to a beautiful girl, who went on to win the title.

Marina Erakovic practised with the great Monica Seles at Auckland on 31st January 2005. Marina was 16 then, 18 now. Monica prophesied that Marina would be a top-ten player as she plays an aggressive all-court game, can hit her backhand two-handed or sliced, and is hard-working and eager to learn.

-------
Doubles
-------

Iroda Tulyaganova/Akgul Amanmuradova:
1r + Hao,Jie/Xie,Yanze [WC], 7-6 (7/5) 6-4
qf - ALLA KUDRYAVTSEVA/SUNITHA RAO [2], 2-6 3-6

=================== {week of 30th October}
ITF WOMEN'S CIRCUIT (Shanghai, China; outdoor hard; ITF $50k)
===================
Singles
-------

Iroda Tulyaganova:
1r + Kapros,Anikó, 6-0 6-1
2r + SUN,TIANTIAN [4], 6-3 6-4
qf + Marina Erakovic, 6-2 7-5
sf - TAMARINE TANASUGARN [2], 4-6 1-6

I find it ironic that while Iroda avenged her last two defeats - to Sun in the WTA Tashkent final, and to Erakovic at ITF Beijing - she lost to Tanasugarn by the same score by which she had beaten her in the second round of Tashkent.

-------
Doubles
-------

Iroda Tulyaganova/Akgul Amanmuradova:
1r + ALLA KUDRYAVTSEVA/SUNITHA RAO [1], 6-7 (2/7) 7-5 6-7 (3/7)
qf + Eva Hrdinová/Marina Shamayko, 4-6 6-1 6-0
sf + Chan,Chin-Wei/Chen,Yi, 6-3 6-0
f - JI,CHUNMEI/SUN,SHENGNAN [2], 4-6 5-7

=================== {week of 6th November}
ITF WOMEN'S CIRCUIT (Shenzhen, China; outdoor hard; ITF $50k)
===================
Singles
-------

IRODA TULYAGANOVA [6]:
1r + Takase,Ayami, 6-3 6-2
2r + Nudnida Luangnam, 7-6 (7/4) 6-2
qf + Xie,Yan-Ze, 6-4 6-4
sf + Sun,Sheng-Nan, 6-4 6-3
f - YUAN,MENG [3], 6-4 5-7 1-6

At least Iroda went one better in each successive tournament, so hopefully next time a title!

No member of my Eternal Fanship has ever won an ITF title apart from those that they won retrospectively (before I inducted them into my Eternal Fanship).

So it was sad to see my jinx continue after Iroda served for the title at 6-4 5-3, only to suffer a back-injury and lose almost every game left in the match.

-----
Final (Sunday 12th November)
-----

I found some information about the final at http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=270113&page=17

First set
---------

Iroda *1-1, 2-1*, 3-2*, *4-4, 5-4*, 6-4.

chrison: "Both players are good runners."

Yuan called for the trainer at the end of the first set.

Second set
----------

Iroda 2-1*, 3-2*, *3-3, *5-3, 5-4*, *5-5, 5-6*, 5-7.

Iroda served for the title at 5-3, but took an off-court medical time-out after Yuan levelled up at 5-5.
chrison: "I think there's something wrong with her low back."

Iroda, serving at 5-5, led 40/15 but lost four points in a row; thus it was Yuan's turn to serve for the set: she had two set-points at 40/15, and converted the second.

James Storms: "Later on, the physiotherapist was called again to work on her right shoulder."

Third set
---------

Iroda *1-3, 1-4*, *1-5, 1-6. The match lasted 2h40m.

http://www.wtaworld.com/showpost.php?p=9473882
http://www.wtaworld.com/showpost.php?p=9473896

-------
Doubles
-------

Iroda Tulyaganova/Akgul Amanmuradova:
1r + EVA HRDINOVÁ/SANDRA ZÁHLAVOVÁ [4], 6-3 6-2
qf + Hao,Jie/Huang,Lei, 6-4 7-5
sf + JI,CHUNMEI/SUN,SHENGNAN [2], 6-1 3-6 7-6 (7/3)
f - HSIEH,SU-WEI/ALLA KUDRYAVTSEVA, 0-2 retired

www.wtatour.com still says that Iroda and Akgul lost in the first round! In fact, it says that Eva and Sandra went on to do exactly what www.itftennis.com says Iroda and Akgul did!

So I really have no proof that Iroda and Akgul actually reached the final - it's just one site's word against the other's, although it makes sense that Iroda would retire from the doubles-final with the back-injury she sustained in the singles-final earlier that day. Oh - and apparently www.itftennis.com used to say that Iroda and Akgul lost in the first round, so hopefully what's there now is the correct result.

Eva Hrdinová is another lovely-looking girl. There are photos of her here:

Uzbekistan withdraw from Asian Hopman Cup

Reuters: "Uzbekistan have pulled out of the inaugural Asian Hopman Cup to focus on the Asian Games, the organisers said on Wednesday."

I hope this doesn't in any way translate as, "Iroda is injured". Ten days ago, she finished ITF Shenzhen with lower-back and right-shoulder injuries.

The Asian Games start on 1st December.

15th ASIAN GAMES (Doha, Qatar)
================ http://www.doha-2006.com/

Apparently this is the world's biggest sporting-event after the Olympic Games! Iroda was the defending champion in Women's Singles, having won a Gold Medal at the Busan 2002 Asian Games.

Search Getty Images for "iroda"

These are the best new photos of Iroda I've seen in three years! (not that there've been many in that time). She looks very fetching in her gold-and-black dress and raven-black hair...

Iroda with Sania Mirza:

...and in that sparkling cyan dress! That's a lovely smile too, despite the loss.

Iroda v Li,Na in Women's Singles quarter-final:
http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=276937

No, I have not watched it yet. I realise that this is sad, but I'm on a very tight schedule - with not a day to spare before the Australian Open - and this report is late enough as it is. So I'm saving the video for Christmas, and then I'll decide what to do with my observations.

-------------------------------
Pretournament quotes from Iroda
-------------------------------

"I'm ready to play and I'm ready to win - my injury's gone. It's going to be tough, but I think I can do it. There are some good players in the fray like Li[,Na] and Sania [Mirza]."

-------------------------
Women's Team: First round (Monday 4th December)
-------------------------

UZBEKISTAN d. INDONESIA, 2:1
+ Akgul Amanmuradova d. Romana Tedjakusuma, 6-4 6-3
+ Iroda Tulyaganova d. Sandy Gumulya, 6-1 4-6 6-2
- Dilyara Saidkhodjaeva/Albina Khabibulina lt. Tedjakusuma/Lavinia Hartono Tananta, 6-7 5-7

Iroda's singles-rubber lasted 1h56m.

First set:
TULYAGA *@ @*@* 6
GUMULYA __@____ 1

Second set:
TULYAGA _*__@*@___ 4
GUMULYA * *@___@*@ 6

Third set:
TULYAGA @*@*@__* 6
GUMULYA _____@*_ 2

---------------------------
Women's Team: Quarter-final (Tuesday 5th December)
---------------------------

UZBEKISTAN d. CHINA, 2:0
+ Akgul Amanmuradova d. Zheng,Jie, 6-3 3-6 7-6
+ Iroda Tulyaganova d. Li,Na, 6-4 1-6 6-1
* Tulyaganova/Amanmuradova v Zheng/Yan,Zi, not played

Wow, beating world #21 Li,Na is an impressive scalp, considering that Li beat Svetlana Kuznetsova and Nicole Vaidišová back-to-back to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon this year!

I saw Li play Maria Sharapova at Birmingham this year. Li has a huge forehand, and was going for broke on every shot, hitting more winners than Maria, but gift-wrapping Maria's victory with a slew of unforced errors. I've read that Li tends to temper her game more nowadays, but she's obviously a very hot-and-cold player.

The match lasted 1h48m.

First set:
TU _* *__@*@* 6
LI * * *@____ 4

Second set:

LI _@*@*@* 6

Third set:

------------------------
Women's Team: Semi-final (Wednesday 6th December)
------------------------

UZBEKISTAN lt. INDIA, 0:2
- Akgul Amanmuradova lt. Shikha Uberoi, 6-7 6-4 3-6
- Iroda Tulyaganova lt. Sania Mirza, 3-6 0-6
* Amanmuradova/Tulyaganova v Mirza/Uberoi, not played

I was looking forward to Iroda's mouthwatering match with Sania, who was by far my second-favourite player at the Games. It's a shame that it was so one-sided, and that the wrong girl won.

Sania has some of the most wonderfully flairsome groundstrokes in the game, but little else as far as I have seen. She's rather cute and sexy, too. She has been through a sophomore-slump this year after an impressive arrival on the scene in 2005 - after which she was persecuted for creating an occasion of sin for others by playing tennis in bare legs!

The match lasted 54 minutes.

First set:
TULYA *____@ @_ 3
MIRZA _*@*@ @ @ 6

Second set:
TULYA ______ 0
MIRZA *@*@*@ 6

Iroda: "I couldn't play well, because Sania was too good. She didn't let me come back, she concentrated a lot, and I was a little tired. It wasn't my day. The crowd was exciting and I appreciate them, and I wish Sania good luck. It was a great day for India with a perfect crowd. Asian Games: Andrew's Tulyaganova v Li video-report

Women's Singles: Quarter-final (Monday 11th December)
------------------------------

- IRODA TULYAGANOVA [8] lt. LI,NA [1], 6-3 5-7 2-6

My match-report is based on the downloadable video:
http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=276937

The video is only 40 minutes long, but covers most of the 2h13m match, cutting out the changeovers and much of the time between points, and sometimes skipping unexpectedly to a future game. It's mostly very watchable, although there are a few points with invisible-ball misery!

Li,Na looks like a thin, Oriental version of Ana Ivanovic, and plays like Ana too, in that she has a big forehand and likes to spread. Li played some very dynamic tennis in this match, often ending up at the net for a forehand smash, while Iroda probably has the most superb sheer athleticism of the players in my Eternal Fanship.

Iroda had all the glamour, with a flamboyant gold-and-black dress, and made all the nice noises too, with an Iva-Majoli-like grunt, and sometimes muttering, shouting or screaming after errors! Li, in contrast, was quiet and unexpressive, like a robot.

Windows Media Player won't let me rewind this video, so I've done the best I can in one take with no pauses:

First Set
---------

TU * * *@* * 6
LI _* *___*_ 3

Iroda serving 0-0: Iroda held, but there was a great rally - I think at 30/15 - where Iroda showed good retrieving, but Li hit a forehand smash-winner.

Li serving 0-1: a quick hold.

Iroda serving 1-1: Iroda held, hitting some sliced backhands and a good error-forcing off-forehand. Iroda's backhand is predominantly a regular two-handed one, but she does go to the one-handed slice more than any other member of my Eternal Fanship.

Li serving 1-2: Held to love, but Iroda showed amazing retrieval on the last point, followed by a nice smile!

Iroda serving 2-2: 15/0. Double fault. 15/15. Li hit a deep error-forcing forehand return. 15/30. Li played a great spreading rally, ending with a volley-winner. 15/40 (two break-points). Iroda saved the first with a crosscourt forehand winner onto the sideline. 30/40. Iroda saved the second with an off-forehand winner. 40/40. Li forehand long. Ad Iroda. Li wild return out.

Li serving 2-3: More great retrieval from Iroda, but seemingly to no avail as Li seemed to be cruising to an easy hold, with a crosscourt forehand winner onto the sideline to make it 40/0. Double fault. 40/15. Li hit two forehands wide. 40/40. And again! Ad Iroda (break-point). She hit a forehand wide. Deuce #2. Iroda hit a great lob that completely switched the initiative from Li to her, enabling Iroda to hit a forehand smash-winner! Ad Iroda (break-point #2). Li long.

Iroda serving 4-2. Iroda mixed up her backhand with one-handed slice and two-handed topspin to win a long rally. 15/0... 40/15. Double fault. 40/30. Iroda held with a backhand winner down the line.

Li serving 2-5: Li held to 15, opening up the court for a forehand smash-winner on the last point.

Iroda serving 5-3: Iroda seemed to hit a wild forehand out, but she can't have done. 15/0. Li backhand smash long. 30/0. Li error. 40/0 (three set-points). Iroda backhand long. 40/15 (set-point #2). I don't know what happened, because the video suddenly jumped into the second set. Iroda held to win the first 6-3.

Third Set
---------

Iroda had more chances early in the set than I had realised: not only did she have two break-points for *3-0, she also had two game-points for 3-1*.

TU @*______ 2
LI __*@*@*@ 6

Iroda opened up the court with an acute-angled forehand - one of the abilities that comes with her extreme Western grip - and I guess she must have hit a forehand winner? 30/40 (break-point). I didn't see what happened to the point which would have given Iroda *3-0. 40/40. Li hit a backhand pass wide with Iroda at the net. Ad Iroda (break-point #2).
