Like any of the top athletes actually cares Why bother with the dying children if you can hit the news talking about gay rights and score easy PR points

Attention whore.

Why are people ganging up on Isinbayeva?
She is free to say what she wants and entitled to her own opinion. Russia does have a completely different culture and it's only natural for her to say this. It will take a lot of time for Russia to have gay marriage etc.

I find it horrifying that people on this board are so quick to dismiss the situation as you are doing right now. There's no excuse for bigotry, prejudice and homophobia. You get it now?

I do get what you want to say and to clarify I certainly don't share her view on this subject. You just have to see her side of this: Isinbayeva is probably completely uneducated regarding the topic of homosexuality and therefore there is no sense in criticising her for her view. It will take ages for the elite of Russia to give in and actually teach/talk about proper human rights and equality. I feel very sorry for people like her, who just don't live in a country, where freedom of speech and equality are publicly exercised.
I am probably very harsh in my response, since I am not personally offended as gay people are. So I can only apologize, if my comment was insensitive. But trust me I don't judge a person for their sexuality or race.

Certainly true. But you can't criticise Isinbayeva for a view she has inherited her entire life. I just think some people are too hard on her. OTOH you could probably argue that a public figure like her would be a good role model to make a start for a change, but that is obviously not gonna happen with her.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

However when you suggest something as ignorant as she did, you deserve to be criticised for it.

She should be hounded out of athletics and be made to film lesbian porno's for the rest of her life.

Why can't we criticize someone for her bigotry? Just because she doesn't think she's being a bigot doesn't mean that she's absolved of all the negative things that might come with being a bigot. Yes, she's a product of her culture, but if she's never stopped to educate herself despite all that's happened in her country, then she deserves all the criticism she's received.

Do those chicks always do that because this has only made the Spanish media? Or do the Anglo-phone media just want to focus on Russians who hate gays and not others.

Ok, ok, agree on that one.
But... I just wonder what impact has such actions like the one done by Swedish high-jumpers, statement coming from Symmonds, boycotting russian vodka, on daily life of russian gays?
Do you really think that expressing the nice and kind words of solidarity with them is the way to help them?
Do you think that those actions made by worldwide would make their lives better? Because I don't think so, things can get even worse for them, because they will be blamed for that.
When they wanted to legalise same-sex partnerships in Poland, you can heard unusual ammount of hating comments everywhere - coming from politicians, priests, actors, usual people who are commenting articles in the internet. I have never heard that many bad things in my life, I have heard in one week.
Eastern Europe is pretty much different than Western - communism did its job, and there are only some exceptions like the Czech Republic which is the most open minded country in that region.
So to me all those actions are nice, but they don't cause any improvement, and I am really starting to think, that the best solution is inviting Russians under our own roofs.
