So since MLDB was having a breakout season at that point, being a teen breaking into the top 100 and reaching R3 of RG, a WC was only natural given the way the LTA operates.

The USTA will not give a MDWC to a non-American with the exception of an Aussie and French player due to the WC trade agreement. They just won't do it. It is an opportunity to showcase new American talent. The reason why MLDB has gotten WC's into Premiers in the States (mainly I am thinking of Miami) is because that tournament is owned by IMG, not the USTA. Michelle used to train at IMG Academies in Bradenton, so it's not a shocker she got WCs into that event.
And let's face it, even if the US applied Wimbledon criteria, they would still have almost twice the number of players to fill 8 WC spots in the top 250 even without the wild card swap...

Re: US Open Wildcards Speculation/News

Hibi is pretty much guaranteed a QWC through the national playoffs, she practically has no oppoisition there...

And I really think the top 250 rule harms the British girls, instead of playing against strong oppoisition and improving their games, they vulture all year long across the globe to get the ranking up.

Re: US Open Wildcards Speculation/News

My picks:

Main draw

Shelby Rogers (Pro Circuit wildcard winner)
Nicole Gibbs (NCAA winner)
Virginie Razzano (French reciprocal)
Ashleigh Barty (Aussie reciprocal)
USTA Girls 18s winner
Alison Riske (top 100, 3rd round Wimbledon, winning on hard courts finally)
Maria Sanchez (ranked 100 spots higher since the last US Open and has had almost no USTA help, deserves a shot)
Samantha Crawford (last year's US Open junior winner, defending points from qualifying into MD last year)

Qualifying
CoCo Vandeweghe
Sachia Vickery
Victoria Duval
Taylor Townsend
Louisa Chirico
Allie Kiick
Brianna Morgan
US Open WC playoff winner (likely Mayo Hibi)

That being said, even though she doesn't deserve it, Melanie Oudin will get a main draw WC over Sanchez. She trains at the National Tennis Center and the USTA literally bend over backwards for her, plus her matches are guaranteed to draw a crowd.

Vaidisova has disabled reputation
Re: US Open Wildcards Speculation/News

In the past two grand slams, at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, James Duckworth has reached the main draw the hard way: via qualifying. In the next, the US Open, the improving Sydneysider is expected to receive Tennis Australia's reciprocal wildcard, along with teenager Ashleigh Barty in the women's event.

Ridiculous - what preparation has she done? Is she setting foot on hard courts before the USO or is it another case of turning up at New York for one singles match as preparation for her vastly superior doubles?

Re: US Open Wildcards Speculation/News

OK so update on WCs

1 USTA ITFs - Shelby Rogers
2 NCAA Champion - Nicole Gibbs
3 French - has to be Virginie Razzano, n'est-ce pas?
4 Australian - looks like Barty yet again (6 MDWCs in 2 years!!!)
5 Nat 18 Girls champ - players still in contention include Sachia Vickery, Victoria Duval, Brooke Austin, Liz Jeukeng, Taylor Townsend, Jamie Loeb, Jan Abaza, Christina Makarova, Alexandra Kiick
6-8 - other US players - Riske? Sanchez? Oudin? Pegula? Min? Vandeweghe?

QWC - I think Sachia Vickery may make Q draw without QWC, but she will get one if not
otherwise - Crawford, Chirico, Nat 18s contenders who do not get MDWC, and maybe Marand/Will/Hsu??

Is actually ridiculous with the Aussies this year, really no one deserves.
Dellacqua - no idea where she is..
Barty - probably home training
Sanders - home training
Rodionova - like they will give her a WC
Jones - no idea where she is
Rogowska - can hardly win a match
Adamczak - same as above

So really none has done much in the US courts recently

She still has age restrictions because of her age. Otherwise she would have played more tournaments. She's done pretty good for a 17 year old, let's not forget how young she is.

Re: US Open Wildcards Speculation/News

She never fulfills her quota of tournaments anyway. She could've slotted in one or two events between Wimbledon and the Open. But no. Nothing.

Ridiculous. This WC agreement needs to be scrapped immediately.

Sanders just reached the semi-final of the $50k at Yakima, beating Shelby Rogers (USTA wild card entry) en route, which makes her more deserving than Barty IMO.

That old chestnut!

She is now 17 so her number of tournaments is not that restricted - she is eligible to play 16 tournaments + Fed Cup between her birthday in April and next April 2014. She has only played 3 of the 16 (Roland Garros, Birmingham, Wimbledon) so that leaves 13 left. Of course, she could have played 1 event before the US Open. Where is she going to fit in the 12 tournaments after the US Open??? Presumably, at the end of the year, she is heading back to those cruddsville Aussie $25ks, which she has already won and which would be totally pointless for her to reappear at...

Donna Vekic is younger and still manages to create some semblance of a schedule that leads up to grand slams...

Re: US Open Wildcards Speculation/News

Stoltenberg is holding her back and its Footy season here and her team are doing well so she is off to see them play instead of playing the US hardcourts. They have it all sorted so no need to concern yourself with when she plays.

According to the WTA it says "16 professional tennis tournaments" which would also include ITF events.

Given that Aussie tournaments in ITF and the Aussie summer are coming up it's not a bad idea to save them.

There are also plenty of Asian events close to home as well.

I don't blame her for having a break.
